Carl Perkins & Friends Blue Suede Shoes A Rockabilly Session:

Description: The appearances of two ex-Beatles, including the late George Harrison, are among the principal attractions in this hour-long 1985 TV show, which spotlights one of the prime movers behind the rock-and-country blend known as rockabilly. Carl Perkins, who died in 1998, was the composer of “Blue Suede Shoes” and other classics, as well as a highly influential guitar player. Here he’s joined by a host of luminaries, including Eric Clapton, musical director Dave Edmunds, Rosanne Cash, and members of the Stray Cats, in addition to Harrison and Ringo Starr, who perform the Perkins tunes (“Matchbox” and “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby”) that the Beatles recorded lo, these many decades ago. But star power notwithstanding, it’s Perkins’s show all the way. Not only can the man still play, but he’s clearly basking in all the attention–as is Harrison, whose rare live performances should be treasured all the more now that he’s gone. –Sam Graham, Amazon Review.

3. Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest with Johnny Cash, June Carter & Roscoe Holcomb:

Description: Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest TV shows were originally aired in 1965-1966; they were released in VHS form by Cap Wineberger in 1985 on his Central Sun label. Now, after another 20 years, the best of these have been revived by Shanachie Records in DVD form, and they are wonderful additions to the rather limited library of old-time, country and Bluegrass music captured on film. The Johnny Cash/June Carter footage: it is fascinating, to say the least. A very young Cash has lots to say along with his fine songs here, and June Carter just oozes the unique, ever-engaging Carter Family charm. The second hour of this disc is devoted to Roscoe Holcomb, who plays both banjo and guitar and sings in his powerful “high lonesome” style. He shares the show with Scottish folk singer Jean Redpath. Powerful stuff here, thankfully preserved! Review, which this typists agrees with whole heartedly, is taken from the countrysales.com site.

2. The Edward R. Murrow Collection


A towering figure in radio and television, Edward R. Murrow is a name still whispered in reverent tones. He established the standards for broadcast journalists, and, when television was in its infancy, brought hard-hitting investigating reporting to prime time. In his inaugural broadcast of the seminal news magazine series, See It Now, a television version of his radio series Hear It Now, Murrow spoke of the new medium’s potential to “illuminate and explain.” He recognized the importance of television, and shared his hopes “to use it, and not abuse it.” The Edward R. Murrow Collection is eloquent testimony to Murrow’s impeccable legacy. The first disc, This Reporter, is Murrow 101, with highlights from his legendary career and praise from the likes of Ted Koppel, Barbara Walters and a pre-Memogate Dan Rather. Dewey DVD Recommendations Friday, July 7, 2017

This week I’m going to recommend the following three Non-Fiction DVDs for your weekend viewing pleasure: Ken Burn’s Baseball, Dick Cavett’s Watergate and a PBS documentary on the great Civil Rights Activist and Senator — John Lewis — titled Get In The Way.

1. Ken Burns Baseball:

This 11 disc set tells the story of baseball from its very beginnings. Seen in the photo is the case of disc 1 which chronicles the story between the years 1840 and 1910.

The Dewey number for baseball is 796.357 and the Dewey number for this specific case is: DVD 796.357 BAS 1&2.

The 1&2 indicates that this case contains the first two discs in a multi disc set.

2. Dick Cavett’s Watergate

This PBS special chronicles the news and happenings of the Watergate Crisis of the 1970s as it was relayed on the legendary Dick Cavett talk show.

The Dewey number for this set is DVD 973.924 DIC – the 970s being the place you’ll find books on American history.

3. John Lewis Get In The Way:

Our third suggestion for this week is another PBS documentary – this one on the legendary Civil Rights Activist and Senator – John Lewis who talks about what it was like to live through and be an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Senator Lewis also discusses some of the main issues our government and nation face today.

Since this disc features a biographical documentary, the Dewey number isn’t a number at all! Just the prefix B is used to indicate it is a biography, and then the last name of the person it is about in this case John Lewis. So the call number for this disc is B LEWIS.

Dewey DVD Recommendations Friday, June 30, 2017

This week I’m going to recommend the following three Non-Fiction DVDs for your weekend viewing pleasure: Chasing UFOs, Apollo 11: A Night To Remember & The 1930s. 

1. Chasing UFOs (Nat Geo)

This two disc set takes a look at UFO sightings and, unlike many UFO related “documentaries,” this one is put out by National Geographic!

The Dewey number for this DVD is 001.942 CHA

And in Library Land the books on the paranormal can be found in the zeros! So if you’d like to browse through the books on UFOs, haunted places, Big Foot and the supernatural in general — this is your section!

2. Apollo 11: A Night To Remember

Our second non-fiction DVD for this week is put out by the BBC and titled Apollo 11: A Night To Remember and contains rare news footage chronicling the journey of the Apollo 11 crew from the moment their ship left the planet, through the first lunar landing and on to their triumphant return to Earth in July of 1969.

3. The 1930s

This five disc PBS documentary offers a glimpse into the lost world of the 1930s. This set offers a look at how regular Americans lived in the 1930s and what the big concerns and topics of interest were. Episodes include: Surviving The Dust Bowl, Sea Biscuit, The Crash of 1929, The Civilian Conservation Corps and Hoover Dam.

The call number for this set is: 973.917 NIN.

Dewey DVD Recommendations Friday, 6 23 17

Welcome to a new weekly suggested viewing posting!

Each Friday I’m going to recommend three Non-Fiction DVDs for your weekend viewing pleasure!

And I’m going to play the librarian card just a little bit, and offer a sentence or two of info on how the DVDs, and for that matter the audio books on CD and Non-Fiction print books, are classified and shelved via the Dewey Decimal System.

This week we have three cool picks!

1. No Job For A Woman

 

This disc offers a documentary on female reporters and their fight against prejudice while trying to report the news during World War II.

The Dewey number for this DVD is 070.433 NO

And in Library Land the Dewey 000s, that is DVDs, books and audio books on CD with a call number ranging from 0 to 099.999, fall under the Dewey umbrella of General Knowledge.

Dewey General Knowledge topics include: Newspapers, Libraries, Museums, Computers, Tablets, E-Readers (and how to use the previously mentioned computers, tablets & e-readers) and generally speaking, general knowledge collections on a variety of subjects.

2. Understanding Modern Electronics:

This is one of the DVDs in the always intriguing Great Courses series. The Great Courses DVDs usually feature lectures by top notch educators and specialists. This three disc set features lectures by Professor Richard Wolfson of Middlebury College who lectures on the subject of how basic electronics work.

The Dewey number for this DVD is 537.5 UND

And the Dewey 500s = Math and Science. Under this umbrella category you’ll find materials on Dinosaurs, Fish, Chemistry, Insects, Plants, Animals, General Mathematics and more.

3. Rock And Roll Hall of Fame + Museum Live:

This DVD is actually the first disc in a 9 disc set that features music played by Rock Hall of Fame inductees during the first twenty five years of Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. This first disc features performance by Cream, The Doors, John Fogarty, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Band and more – and this is just disc 1!

The Dewey number for this DVD is 782.4216 ROC 1. And notably, the one at the end notes that this is a multi-disc set and that this is the first disc of the set.

And the Dewey 700 umbrella category is: Arts & Recreation – which is why the 700s are one of my favorite Dewey sections!

In these book/DVD & audio book sections you’ll find items on art, music, jokes, painting, drawing, knitting, playing the guitar, piano or bass, songbooks, sports, games and more!

The 700s rock – literally since this is the section that features items on Rock & Roll! It is a neat section – check it out!

And if you want to browse through the discs in our Rock Hall of Fame DVD series – they are currently hanging out in the New DVD section near the Circulation Desk when they are in the library.
