Daily Digital & Print Suggested Reads: Friday, December 1, 2017

Hi everyone, here are our recommended titles for today.

(Note: Click on the photo of the item you’d like to request or check out)

Our digital suggestion for today is the ebook:

In This Moment by Karen Kingsbury:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury comes a brand-new Baxter Family novel about a beloved high school principal who starts a Bible Study to improve the lives of his struggling students, only to become the national focus of a controversial lawsuit.

Hamilton High Principal Wendell Quinn is tired of the violence, drug abuse, teen pregnancies, and low expectations at his Indianapolis school. A single father of four, Quinn is a Christian and a family man. He wants to see change in his community, so he starts a voluntary after-school Bible Study and prayer program. He knows he is risking his job by leading the program, but the high turnout at every meeting encourages him.

A year later, violence and gang activity are down, test scores are up, and drug use and teen pregnancy have plummeted. The program is clearly working—until one parent calls the press. Now Quinn faces a lawsuit that could ruin everything.

With a storm of national attention and criticism, Quinn is at a crossroads—he must choose whether to cave in and shut down the program or stand up for himself and his students. The battle comes with a high cost, and Quinn wants just one attorney on his side for this fight: Luke Baxter. In This Moment is an inspiring, relevant story about the nuances of religious freedom and how a group of determined people just might restore the meaning of faith in today’s culture.

A Secret Sisterhood, The Literary Friendships of Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Virginia Woolf by Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney:

Male literary friendships are the stuff of legend; think Byron and Shelley, Fitzgerald and Hemingway. But the world’s best-loved female authors are usually mythologized as solitary eccentrics or isolated geniuses. Coauthors and real-life friends Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney prove this wrong, thanks to their discovery of a wealth of surprising collaborations: the friendship between Jane Austen and one of the family servants, playwright Anne Sharp; the daring feminist author Mary Taylor, who shaped the work of Charlotte Brontë; the transatlantic friendship of the seemingly aloof George Eliot and Harriet Beecher Stowe; and Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, most often portrayed as bitter foes, but who, in fact, enjoyed a complex friendship fired by an underlying erotic charge.

Through letters and diaries that have never been published before, A Secret Sisterhood resurrects these forgotten stories of female friendships. They were sometimes scandalous and volatile, sometimes supportive and inspiring, but always—until now—tantalizingly consigned to the shadows.

Carl Perkins & Friends Blue Suede Shoes A Rockabilly Session:

Description: The appearances of two ex-Beatles, including the late George Harrison, are among the principal attractions in this hour-long 1985 TV show, which spotlights one of the prime movers behind the rock-and-country blend known as rockabilly. Here he’s joined by a host of luminaries, including Eric Clapton, musical director Dave Edmunds, Rosanne Cash, and members of the Stray Cats, in addition to Harrison and Ringo Starr, who perform the Perkins tunes (“Matchbox” and “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby”) that the Beatles recorded lo, these many decades ago. But star power notwithstanding, it’s Perkins’s show all the way. Not only can the man still play, but he’s clearly basking in all the attention–as is Harrison, whose rare live performances should be treasured all the more now that he’s gone. –Sam Graham, Amazon Review.

3. Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest with Johnny Cash, June Carter & Roscoe Holcomb:

Description: Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest TV shows were originally aired in 1965-1966; they were released in VHS form by Cap Wineberger in 1985 on his Central Sun label. Now, after another 20 years, the best of these have been revived by Shanachie Records in DVD form, and they are wonderful additions to the rather limited library of old-time, country and Bluegrass music captured on film. The Johnny Cash/June Carter footage: it is fascinating, to say the least. A very young Cash has lots to say along with his fine songs here, and June Carter just oozes the unique, ever-engaging Carter Family charm. The second hour of this disc is devoted to Roscoe Holcomb, who plays both banjo and guitar and sings in his powerful “high lonesome” style. He shares the show with Scottish folk singer Jean Redpath. Powerful stuff here, thankfully preserved! Review, which this typists agrees with whole heartedly, is taken from the countrysales.com site.

The film removes Salazar from the glare of myth and martyrdom and offers a clear-eyed look at the man.

Thank You, Mr. President Helen Thomas at the White House – DVD 070.02 THA

Description: Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House profiles the iconic journalist, a legend in political reporting, who has covered the White House and every president since John F. Kennedy. In this 38-minute film, Thomas, still as sharp as ever, sits down for a one-on-one interview in which she reflects on her storied career, the distinct personalities and foibles of the presidents she has covered, as well as some of the scandals that have rocked the White House over the years. Supplemented by clips of Thomas in action, plus archival photos and footage, the film offers a rare glimpse of a veteran member of the White House Press Corps, who was one of only a handful of female correspondents when she began covering the presidency in the 1960s. Idolized by many and despised by some, Thomas is without a doubt a determined and steadfast journalist, who maintains the utmost respect for the office of the presidency, while knowing it is her job to ask the tough questions.

2. The Edward R. Murrow Collection

A towering figure in radio and television, Edward R. Murrow is a name still whispered in reverent tones. He established the standards for broadcast journalists, and, when television was in its infancy, brought hard-hitting investigating reporting to prime time. In his inaugural broadcast of the seminal news magazine series, See It Now, a television version of his radio series Hear It Now, Murrow spoke of the new medium’s potential to “illuminate and explain.” He recognized the importance of television, and shared his hopes “to use it, and not abuse it.” The Edward R. Murrow Collection is eloquent testimony to Murrow’s impeccable legacy. The first disc, This Reporter, is Murrow 101, with highlights from his legendary career and praise from the likes of Ted Koppel, Barbara Walters and a pre-Memogate Dan Rather. The Best of “See It Now” offers a representative sampling of some of this series’ finest hours. The technology may be primitive (that inaugural broadcast featured the then-unprecedented miracle of a live coast-to-coast transmission, with twin images of New York’s Brooklyn Bridge and San Francisco’s Golden Gate), but the stories remain compelling. Among them: race relations from the perspective two southern small towns; a Christmas visit with American soldiers in Korea; profiles of Louis Armstrong and artist Grandma Moses; and flying into the eye of a hurricane.

The McCarthy Years chronicles the fall of a demagogue. In these dramatic and controversial broadcasts, Murrow used McCarthy’s own words to expose his reckless abuse of power, and, in the story of disgraced Air Force lieutenant Milo Radulovich, put a human face on the “epidemic of fear” that was McCarthyism. The final disc contains Harvest of Shame, a television benchmark. Broadcast the day after Thanksgiving, this “1960 Grapes of Wrath” exposed the agonizing plight of migrant farm workers. “We used to own our slaves,” one farmer is quoted. “Now we just rent them.” This indispensable set will hopefully serve as inspiration for budding journalists, and a reality check for network news executives. –Donald Liebenson, Amazon.com review.

The general Dewey Decimal Call Number for the four disc Edward R. Murrow Collection is: DVD 070.19 EDW. Additionally, each disc will feature a number at the end of the call number to distinguish which disc it is in the set, i.e. 1, 2 3 or 4. The specific call numbers for this set, and the titles for each disc are:

Call No. DVD 070.19 EDW 1 – Title: This Reporter
Call No. DVD 070.19 EDW 2 – Title: See it Now
Call No. DVD 070.19 EDW 3 – Title: McCarthy Years

Dewey DVD Recommendations Friday, July 7, 2017

This week I’m going to recommend the following three Non-Fiction DVDs for your weekend viewing pleasure: Ken Burn’s Baseball, Dick Cavett’s Watergate and a PBS documentary on the great Civil Rights Activist and Senator — John Lewis — titled Get In The Way.

1. Ken Burns Baseball:

This 11 disc set tells the story of baseball from its very beginnings. Seen in the photo is the case of disc 1 which chronicles the story between the years 1840 and 1910.

The Dewey number for baseball is 796.357 and the Dewey number for this specific case is: DVD 796.357 BAS 1&2.

The 1&2 indicates that this case contains the first two discs in a multi disc set.

2. Dick Cavett’s Watergate

This PBS special chronicles the news and happenings of the Watergate Crisis of the 1970s as it was relayed on the legendary Dick Cavett talk show.

The Dewey number for this set is DVD 973.924 DIC – the 970s being the place you’ll find books on American history.

3. John Lewis Get In The Way:

Our third suggestion for this week is another PBS documentary – this one on the legendary Civil Rights Activist and Senator – John Lewis who talks about what it was like to live through and be an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Senator Lewis also discusses some of the main issues our government and nation face today.

Since this disc features a biographical documentary, the Dewey number isn’t a number at all! Just the prefix B is used to indicate it is a biography, and then the last name of the person it is about in this case John Lewis. So the call number for this disc is B LEWIS.

Have a great day!
