Birthday Blues Suggested Listen!

I’m a huge fan of the British blues musician and band leader John Mayall, who turns 84 years young today (11/29).

He is most famous for the albums he recorded in the sixties with a whole host of great musicians, some of whom have since became world famous including: John McVie, Mick Fleetwood (albeit in his case briefly), Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Mick Taylor.

In the seventies he moved to California and he has continued to play concerts and record albums in all the years since then – and despite the concentration of great musicians who went through his band in the sixties — the man is a first rate musician and singer all on his own!

His 2017 release is titled

Talk About That 

And if you like the blues you might give it a listen on his birthday!

Songs on the LP include: Talk About That, It’s Hard Going Up, The Devil Must Be Laughing, Gimme Some of That Gumbo, Blue Midnight and You Never Know.

The Innocent Age by Dan Fogelberg:

Singer songwriter Dan Fogelberg crafted sparkling songs during the seventies, eighties and nineties. This album, originally released in 1981, is one of his best and features some of his best known songs including: Run for the Roses, The Innocent Age, Leader of the Band, Hard to Say and Sam Old Lang Syne.

Cello Concerto in E minor, Op.85 by Jacqueline du Pré (Genre: Classical):

Jacqueline Du Pre was the first female cellist to gain an international audience. She was born in Oxford, England in 1945 and began playing the cello at the age of 4. In the sixties she performed extensively only to have her performing career cut drastically short, at age 27, by a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. She continued a career in music via teaching through the 1990s.

In the mid-eighties Rick Benjamin rediscovered arraignments of the Arthur Pryor Orchestra which had been lost for more than sixty years. Benjamin formed the 15 piece Paragon Ragtime Orchestra to play the arraignments and other songs from the 19th and early 20th century. Their music truly opens a window into a lost world!

CD of the Week:
