Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions* and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

1. The Essential Otis Rush: The Classic Cobra Recordings 1956-1958 (Genre: Blues, Guitar):

This is a wonderful collection of songs from the great blues guitarist who died last week.

Songs in the collection include: I Can’t Quit You Baby, My Love Will Never Die, Groaning the Blues, Jump Sister Rosie, Double Trouble and All Your Love.

2. American Horror Songs by Various Artists (Genre: Pop, Swing, Spoken, Rock):

A collection of fun “horror” songs by a mix of classic and contemporary artists including Shooter Jennings, Ann Williams, Cab Calloway, Dirk Jacobs & His Orchestra and the Ohio Express. This is a cool album perfect for the month of Halloween.

Songs on the LP include: Halloween by Betty Grable and David Wayne, The Wobblin’ Goblin by Rosemary Clooney, The Little Man Who Wasn’t There by The Glen Miller Orchestra, Halloween by Bob Hope, The Raven by Basil Rathbone, The Ghost of Ol’ Man Moss by Harry Gold and Nightmare by The Velvets.

3. To The Roots and Back (1972) by Lloyd Price:

A classic LP by the pop and R&B favorite sees him updating some of his classic fifties hits for the seventies era.

Songs on the LP include: Sing a Song, They Get Down, It Ain’t Easy, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, Stagger Lee and Personality — all with a seventies spin on them!

4. Fabulous Fifty 5 LPs: This is a fun set of five albums available to stream and download separately from Freegal. The albums feature a great combo of fifties pop, rhythm and blues and rock – perfect for parties or just weekend listening.

Songs on the album include: Jamaica Farewell by Harry Belafonte, Sh Boom by The Crew Cuts, Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino, Reveille Rock by Johnny & The Hurricanes and Bye, Bye Love by The Everly Brothers.

Recommended CD of the Week:

Over The Years (2018) by Graham Nash (Genre: Pop, Rock, Vocal): 

Arriving nearly a decade after the career-spanning 2009 box Reflections, Over the Years… isn’t nearly as ambitious a compilation as its predecessor. In its simplest form, it’s a collection of 15 highlights from Nash’s career, using the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album as its starting point and running until his 2016 album, This Path Tonight. Despite that designation, Over the Years… largely lingers on material made during the ’70s and early ’80s, anchored on CSN standards (“Marrakesh Express,” “Just a Song Before I Go,” “Teach Your Children,” “Our House,” “Wasted on the Way”) and featuring two Crosby & Nash tracks (“Immigration Man,” “Wind on the Water”) in addition to five solo cuts. All of this makes for a nice capsule introduction, but for the dedicated, the selling point is the second disc on the Deluxe Edition, which collects 15 demos. The great majority of these — 12, as a matter of fact — were recorded between 1968 and 1972, with three of the previously mentioned CSN classics from the twilight of the ’70s rounding out the disc. A few of these were previously released, but taken as a collective, these unadorned recordings — just a guitar and a voice, save “Wind on the Water” and “Just a Song Before I Go,” where Nash plays piano, and “Wasted on the Way,” which features Stephen Stills on harmony — strip away not just the studio polish but nostalgia, revealing the delicate craft that lies behind them.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

The 1961 Summer Sessions (2016) by Grant Green (Genre: Jazz):

Grant Green was one of the greatest Jazz guitarist of the sixties and might be much better known today if he hadn’t died so young – in 1979 at age 43. This collection, obviously recorded in the summer of 1961 and includes the songs: Blues in Maude’s Flat, Sunday Morning’, If I Had You, Come Sunshine, So What and I Remember You.

The Essential Donovan by Donovan (Genre: Folk, Pop):

A solid greatest hits collection by the singer-songwriter who made it big in the sixties with hits including Sunshine Superman, Season of the Witch and Mellow Yellow; this collection contains those songs and others including: There Is A Mountain, Sunny Goodge Street, Ile of Islay, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Get They Bearings, Lalena and Atlantis.

Johnnie and Joe (2014) by Johnnie and Joe: 

I had never heard of Johnnie and Joe before I stumbled across this four song mini-LP on Freegal.
According to AllMusic Johnnie and Joe, whose full names were Johnnylouise Richardson and Joe Rivers, were a vocal duo that cut a couple of singles for Chess Records in the 1950s. And there most popular of their songs was “Over the Mountain, Across the Sea.”

Having said that, this recording, which was released by Resnick Records in 2014, sounds as if it was recorded in the 1970s but the four songs are very upbeat and definitely worth a listen.
The songs are: Help Me Brother, I Wish That Someone Was Me, Right for the Part & You Can Always Count On Me.

The One And Only Lefty Frizzell (1959) (Bonus Track Version) by Lefty Frizzell:

A classic album by a classic country artist!

Songs in the set include: If You’ve Got The Money, I’ve Go The Time, Mom and Dad Waltz, Nobody Knows But Me, Release Me and Why Should I Be Lonely.

Recommended CD of the Week:

The Who Sing My Generation (1965) by The Who (Genre: Rock, Mod-Rock):

The debut album by The Who!

This album features a great mix of mod and Beatlesque music.

Songs on the LP include: Out in the Street, I Don’t Mind, My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, A Legal Matter and The Ox.

13 Avenue South (2018) by Travellin´ Brothers (Genre: Blues, Swing, Jazz, Funk, Rock):

The Travellin’ Brothers are just breaking into a wider audience with their new LP 13 Avenue South.

They have a great horn section and their sound hearkens back to the days of Stax; despite that fact – they are actually from Bizkaia which is located in northern Spain – although the vocals on the album are all in English. This is a fun LP!

Songs on the record include: Peggy Sue Got Divorced, Sweet Corrine, As Good as It Gets, I Believe and Last Fair Deal Going Down.

Depacla 2 (2009) by Depapepe (Genre: Classical, Easy Listening, Acoustic):

Depapepe is a duo consisting of acoustic guitarists Takuya Miura and Yoshinari Tokuoka. And this album features a nice collection of light classical songs.

Songs on the album include: Pomp and Circumstance, Wedding March, Fantasia on Greensleeves, Turkish Rondo and Orpheus in the Underworld Overture.

Dream Attic (2010) by Richard Thompson (Genre: Guitar, Folk, Rock):

2010 release by the talented singer-songwriter guitarist, and former member of the British Folk group Fairport Convention.

Songs on the LP include: The Money Shuffle, Haul Me Up, Burning Man, Stumble On and Demons in Her Dancing Shoes.

In The Blue Light (2018) by Paul Simon (Genre: Rock, Pop, Singer-Songwriter):

The just released LP by the great Paul Simon!

Songs on the album include: One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor, Love, Pigs, Sheep and Wolves, The Teacher, Some Folks’ Lives Roll Easy

Recommended CD of the Week:

Gaucho (1980) by Steely Dan (Genre: Jazz-Pop Fusion):

The eighth album by the mellow jazz-pop duo comprised of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Donald Fagen and his song-writing partner bassist and guitarist Walter Becker.

Songs on the album include: Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Time out of Mind, Gaucho and Glamour Profession.

Unforgettable: A Tribute To Dinah Washington (1964) by Aretha Franklin (Genre: Vocal, R&B, Pop):

A jazzy, stringy and terrific album by the late, great Aretha Franklin as she honors one of her favorite singers – Dinah Washington.

Songs on the LP include: Cold, Cold Heart, What a Diff’rence a Day Makes, Nobody Knows The Way I Feel This Morning, Evil Gal Blues, Soulville and Lee Cross.

Six Evolutions – Bach: Cello Suites (2018) by Yo-Yo Ma (Genre: Classical):

This collection offers many cello concertos played, unaccompanied, by the virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Third Journey (2018) by Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg (Genre: Country, Folk, Classical, Acoustic):

“It was in 2007 at the Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, California that we first met. We had known about each other, had each other’s recordings and admired each other’s playing, but we had not yet met formally. On our first recording, we were simply trying to find common musical ground with an appreciation for Bach, Brazilian, Bulgarian and Bluegrass music. Our second CD dove into the heart of our favorite composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions* and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

Outcast EP (2018) by Liz Brasher (Genre: Pop, Rock, Rock Vocal)

Guitarist and vocalist Liz Brahser is 27, grew up in North Carolina and now lives in Memphis.
Her 2018 EP Outcast has been highly praised by NPR, and to this listener’s ears it sounds like solid garage band music backing the deep voiced vocals of Brasher. If you like traditional (aka roots) Rock and Roll then you should enjoy this LP.

Songs on the EP include: Body of Mine, Come My Way, Feel Something, Outcast, Remain and Cold Baby.

The Coral (2002) by The Coral (Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Mod Rock, Retro-Rock):

The Coral hail from Hoylake, England which is just across the Mersey River from Liverpool. The group was formed in 1996, and the band consist of James Skelly on guitar and vocals, Bill Ryder-Jones on guitar, Ian Skelly on drums, Paul Duffy on bass and Nick Powers on keyboards. This album is highly rated on the AllMusic site and I’ll admit I had never heard of the band until I stumbled across a review of the brand new LP Move Through The Dawn. However, as with Liz Brasher if you like traditional Rock and Roll, whether you call it roots rock, retro rock or just plain Rock and Roll – then you should enjoy the music of this group.

Songs on the LP include: Shadows Fall, I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Skeleton Key, Wildfire and Calendars and Clocks.

And if you’re wondering why I’m not recommending the bands 2018 LP – that is because Freegal doesn’t have it – but our library will be adding it to our collection shortly.

West Side Story Reimagined (2018) by Bobby Sanabria Big Band (Genre: Jazz, Showtunes):

Bobby Sanabria and his band reinterpret the entire Bernstein West Side Story soundtrack. The songs were recorded live at Lincoln Center and feature intros by Bobby and his band. This swinging album is fun!

Songs on the album include: America, Tonight, Maria, Cool, The Rumble, Somwhere, One Hand One Heart and Gym Scene.

Your Favourite Coffee House – The Coffee Pad, Vol. 1 by Various Artists (Genre: Mariachi, Mexican folk and just plain festive music by whatever designation!)

Songs on the LP include: Moliendo Cafe by Hernan Gamboa, El Agua Cerro by Mariposa Solar, La Prietita Clara by Amparo Ochoa, El Manisero by Dos Gardenias and El Gallo.

Recommended CD of the Week:

Didn’t He Ramble: Songs of Charlie Poole (2018 by) David Davis & The Warrior River Boys (Genre: Bluegrass, Traditional Country, Folk, Acoustic):

Mandolinist and vocalist Dave Davis and the Warrior River Boys play songs originally recorded by Charlie Poole and His North Carolina Ramblers in the 1920s and 1930s.

Songs on the album include: He Rambled, One Moonlight Night, Ramblin’ Blues, Leaving Home, Goodbye Mary Dear, Milwaukee Blues and White House Blues.

Summer is a very busy time in Library Land and thus I’m running out of week to finishing this posting!

So I’m going to offer brief descriptions of each album and recommend that if you like the genre of music the artist/band plays – you should check out their recommended album!

Freegal Recommend Albums of the Week:

Encore, Encore (1979) by Fairport Convention (Genre: Folk, British Folk, Folk-Rock):

Fairport Convention formed in the mid-sixties and was one of the most prolific British folk rock bands of the era.
This album was recorded on the folk group’s farewell tour in 1979 and the music has a poignant quality to it, as one would expect of a long playing band about to retire.

Of course, the group reformed in the 1980s and has continues to play until this day – but band members didn’t know that would happen in 1979!

Songs on the LP include: Orange Blossom Special, Bridge Over The River, Mr. Lacey, The Bonny Black Hare and The Journeyman’s Grace.

New York Rhapsody (2016) by Lang Lang (Genre: Classical, Easy Listening, Piano):

This classical LP is a perfect to play as background music while unwinding over the weekend!

Pianist Lang Lang is accompanied by the follow guest artists: Jason Isbell, Andra Day, Herbie Hancock, Kandace Springs, Sean Jones, Lindsey Stirling & Madeleine Peyroux.

Songs on the LP include: New York Morning, Empire State of Mind, Rhapsody in Blue, Somewhere and Story of Our Town.

James House And The Blue Cowboys (2018) by James House And The Blue Cowboys (Genre: Rock, Blues, Blues-Rock, Americana):

The brand new bluesy album by Nashville based singer-songwriter James House and his band.
Songs on the LP include: Jail House Blues, Long Way Down, Gone Again, Ain’t No Way, Ballad of the Troubadour Kings & Arkansas Woman.

Home (2017) by Collabro (Genre: Vocal, Musical Theatre):

Collabro is a British vocal group, consisting of signers Michael Auger, Richard Hadfield, Jamie Lambert, Matt Pagan & Tom Redgrave that has its roots in singing musical theatre songs.

Songs on the LP include: This is the Moment, That’s Life, For Good, December 1963 (Oh What a Night) and Lighthouse.

Recommended CD of the Week:

Voices (2018) by Tom Rush (Genre: Folk, Rock):

This is a great new album by folk singer who got his start during the sixties folk boom.
This album has a solid depth to it as one might expect from a musician still playing and recording in his seventh decade.

Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions* and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

A Mighty Wind (Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2003) by Various Artists (Genre: Folk, Comedy, Soundtrack):

The film A Might Wind was created Christopher Guest, the man behind the comedic films movies Waiting For Guffman and Best in Show. And this movie, like those, and This Is Spinal Tap that came before them – is a comedy – in this case sending up the early sixties folk music scene by having a group of fictionalized 60s folk performers coming together years later to put on a show. The film has a nice soft nostalgic glow to it so if you like 60s folk music – you should enjoy this soundtrack – the songs were written for the film and performed by the actors in the movie.

The songs too are comedic but fun! And include: Old Joe’s Place by Folksmen, When You’re Next To Me by Mitch & Mickey, Never Did No Wanderin’ by Folksmen and Loco Man and The Good Book Song by New Main Street Singers.

Less Wise (2017) by Cody Jinks (Genre: Country):

Cody Jinks has had an interesting career to date. He started out playing trash metal before switching to country music. If you’re not familiar with his music he has a deep rich classic country type of voice and plays a mixture of updated classic southern and outlaw rock.

Less Wise is one of his best albums and includes the songs: Wake Up Becki!, Hippies & Cowboys, 65 Days in L.A., Somewhere in the Middle and Last Call for the Blues.

Worth It All (2018) by Jeffery Osborne (Genre: R&B):

Let a Brotha Know, Greatest Knight, Stay the Way You Are, Summer Nights, Saving My Love and Can’t Help Myself

Saturday Night with Mr. C (1958) by Perry Como (Genre: Easy Listening, Vocal):

A classic album by the golden pop age crooner Perry Como. This is a perfect easy listening album for the weekend!

Songs on the LP include: Dream Along With Me, It Could Happen To You, Letters Theme, Gypsy In My Soul and Come Rain or Come Shine.

Recommended CD of the Week:

The Very Best of Peppermint Harris

Peppermint Harris was a true original with a brilliant way with words which made him a superlative songwriter having man of his compositions recorded by top blues artists such as B.B. King and Bobby Bland. This is a must for blues fans and across the 56 tracks, there are many superb tracks as well as his two hits “Raining In My Heart” which reached #4 in the 1950 R&B chart and more importantly the classic drinking song “I Got Loaded” which hit the #1 spot for two weeks in 1951. Although this excellent 2CD set is by no means the complete it does present the most comprehensive exploration of his work between 1948 and 1959 yet released in the CD era. Fully detailed liner notes.

The Tree (2018) by Lori McKenna (Genre: Folk, Singer-Songwriter):

The Tree is the new and ninth album by the talented singer songwriter Lori McKenna. McKenna’s songs have been covered by a host of country artists including Faith Hill, Mandy Moore, Vance Gilbert and Tim McGraw.

McKenna’s truly a modern folk songwriter. Her songs remind me of Woody Guthrie’s songs in that they are based upon everyday things going on now and experienced by many people.

My favorite song on the LP is People Get Old, which, despite it’s title, is charmingly humorous and hopeful.

Other songs on the album include: A Mother Never Rests, Young and Angry Again, The Fixer, The Tree, Happy People and the Lot Behind St. Mary’s.

Get Your Groove (2018) by Bruce Katz Band (Genre: Blues, Blues-Rock):

Pianist Bruce Katz was a child prodigy and is best known as a member of the blues band Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters. He’s played great jazz and blues music over the years and is a retired professor of music who taught at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In addition to Katz himself, the Bruce Katz Band features Christ Vitarello on guitar and vocals and Ray Hangen on drums.

Special guest on this LP is percussionist Jaimoe – an original member of the Allman Brothers band.

Americas (1992) by Strunz & Farah (Genre: International, Jazz, Flamenco Guitar, Acoustic):

Strunz & Farah is a guitar playing duo that consists of Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah.

The duo offers great up-tempo music that conjures up mental images of rain forests, moonlight waters and natural landscapes in general.

This is a perfect album for background music on the weekend, during dinner, while reading or just whenever you want to unwind!

Songs on the LP include: Luna Suave (Soft Moon) Alas del Sur (Wings of the South), Gypsy Earrings, Selva and Americas.

The Coolest Songs in the World! Vol. 1 by Various Artists presented by Little Steven’s Underground Garage:

The “Little Steven” of the title is Steven Van Zandt who has played in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band for years.

This is a collection of rough, traditional garage band music in the vein of the Kingsmen’s Louie, Louie.

Artists and songs on the LP include: Can’t Stand It by The Greenhorns, My Kind of Girl by The Forty-Fives, Lost My Motto by Cotton Mather, I Woke UP This Mornin’ by The Mooney Suzuki and You’re My Favorite by Caesars.

Recommended CD of the Week:

United We Swing: Best of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Galas (2018) by the Wynton Marsalis Septet (Genre: Jazz, Vocal):

This collection features some cool live performances the trumpeter and his friends gave at Lincoln Center between 2003 and 2007.

The friends playing with Wynton include Blind Boys of Alabama, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Natalie Merchant, John Meyer, Audra McDonald and Eric Clapton.

The collection features 16 songs including: It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (with Bob Dylan), My Baby Don’t Tolerate (with Lyle Lovett), Please Baby Don’t (with John Legend), Empty Bed Blues (with Carrie Smith) and Fool’s Paradise (with Jimmy Buffett).
