Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions* and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

A Mighty Wind (Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2003) by Various Artists (Genre: Folk, Comedy, Soundtrack):

The film A Might Wind was created Christopher Guest, the man behind the comedic films movies Waiting For Guffman and Best in Show. And this movie, like those, and This Is Spinal Tap that came before them – is a comedy – in this case sending up the early sixties folk music scene by having a group of fictionalized 60s folk performers coming together years later to put on a show. The film has a nice soft nostalgic glow to it so if you like 60s folk music – you should enjoy this soundtrack – the songs were written for the film and performed by the actors in the movie.

The songs too are comedic but fun! And include: Old Joe’s Place by Folksmen, When You’re Next To Me by Mitch & Mickey, Never Did No Wanderin’ by Folksmen and Loco Man and The Good Book Song by New Main Street Singers.

Less Wise (2017) by Cody Jinks (Genre: Country):

Cody Jinks has had an interesting career to date. He started out playing trash metal before switching to country music. If you’re not familiar with his music he has a deep rich classic country type of voice and plays a mixture of updated classic southern and outlaw rock.

Less Wise is one of his best albums and includes the songs: Wake Up Becki!, Hippies & Cowboys, 65 Days in L.A., Somewhere in the Middle and Last Call for the Blues.

Worth It All (2018) by Jeffery Osborne (Genre: R&B):

Let a Brotha Know, Greatest Knight, Stay the Way You Are, Summer Nights, Saving My Love and Can’t Help Myself

Saturday Night with Mr. C (1958) by Perry Como (Genre: Easy Listening, Vocal):

A classic album by the golden pop age crooner Perry Como. This is a perfect easy listening album for the weekend!

Songs on the LP include: Dream Along With Me, It Could Happen To You, Letters Theme, Gypsy In My Soul and Come Rain or Come Shine.

Recommended CD of the Week:

The Very Best of Peppermint Harris

Peppermint Harris was a true original with a brilliant way with words which made him a superlative songwriter having man of his compositions recorded by top blues artists such as B.B. King and Bobby Bland. This is a must for blues fans and across the 56 tracks, there are many superb tracks as well as his two hits “Raining In My Heart” which reached #4 in the 1950 R&B chart and more importantly the classic drinking song “I Got Loaded” which hit the #1 spot for two weeks in 1951. Although this excellent 2CD set is by no means the complete it does present the most comprehensive exploration of his work between 1948 and 1959 yet released in the CD era. Fully detailed liner notes.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

The Tree (2018) by Lori McKenna (Genre: Folk, Singer-Songwriter):

The Tree is the new and ninth album by the talented singer songwriter Lori McKenna. McKenna’s songs have been covered by a host of country artists including Faith Hill, Mandy Moore, Vance Gilbert and Tim McGraw.

McKenna’s truly a modern folk songwriter. Her songs remind me of Woody Guthrie’s songs in that they are based upon everyday things going on now and experienced by many people.

My favorite song on the LP is People Get Old, which, despite it’s title, is charmingly humorous and hopeful.

Other songs on the album include: A Mother Never Rests, Young and Angry Again, The Fixer, The Tree, Happy People and the Lot Behind St. Mary’s.

Get Your Groove (2018) by Bruce Katz Band (Genre: Blues, Blues-Rock):

Pianist Bruce Katz was a child prodigy and is best known as a member of the blues band Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters. He’s played great jazz and blues music over the years and is a retired professor of music who taught at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In addition to Katz himself, the Bruce Katz Band features Christ Vitarello on guitar and vocals and Ray Hangen on drums.

Special guest on this LP is percussionist Jaimoe – an original member of the Allman Brothers band.

Americas (1992) by Strunz & Farah (Genre: International, Jazz, Flamenco Guitar, Acoustic):

Strunz & Farah is a guitar playing duo that consists of Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah.

The duo offers great up-tempo music that conjures up mental images of rain forests, moonlight waters and natural landscapes in general.

This is a perfect album for background music on the weekend, during dinner, while reading or just whenever you want to unwind!

Songs on the LP include: Luna Suave (Soft Moon) Alas del Sur (Wings of the South), Gypsy Earrings, Selva and Americas.

The Coolest Songs in the World! Vol. 1 by Various Artists presented by Little Steven’s Underground Garage:

The “Little Steven” of the title is Steven Van Zandt who has played in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band for years.

This is a collection of rough, traditional garage band music in the vein of the Kingsmen’s Louie, Louie.

Artists and songs on the LP include: Can’t Stand It by The Greenhorns, My Kind of Girl by The Forty-Fives, Lost My Motto by Cotton Mather, I Woke UP This Mornin’ by The Mooney Suzuki and You’re My Favorite by Caesars.

Recommended CD of the Week:

United We Swing: Best of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Galas (2018) by the Wynton Marsalis Septet (Genre: Jazz, Vocal):

This collection features some cool live performances the trumpeter and his friends gave at Lincoln Center between 2003 and 2007.

The friends playing with Wynton include Blind Boys of Alabama, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Natalie Merchant, John Meyer, Audra McDonald and Eric Clapton.

The collection features 16 songs including: It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (with Bob Dylan), My Baby Don’t Tolerate (with Lyle Lovett), Please Baby Don’t (with John Legend), Empty Bed Blues (with Carrie Smith) and Fool’s Paradise (with Jimmy Buffett).

The Essential Joshua Bell (Genre: Easy Listening, Classical):

Violin virtuoso Joshua Bell hails from Bloomington, Indiana and is a Grammy award winner who has a solo career and also conducts the Academy in the Fields Orchestra.

This collection features notable classical works and some popular songs as well, including Swan Lake, Op. 20, Act III: Danse russe, Nocturne No. 20 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. posth (Arranged for Violin & Orchestra), Songs without Words, Op. 62, No. 1: May Breezes (Arranged for Violin & Orchestra)I Got Rhythm , Ladies in Lavender and I. Cremona, The Red Violin.

Best of Cowboy Junkies (2001) by Cowboy Junkies (Genre: Traditional Folk, Rock):

The AllMusic bio of the Cowboy Junkies is spot on! Author Steve Huey describes the band thus “Canada’s Cowboy Junkies’ create a music grounded in traditional country, blues, and folk, filled with languid guitars and ethereal vocals courtesy of Margo Timmins.” And that well sums it up! This is a great band and the albums have a uniformly excellent quality to them – always in an ethereal way.

This greatest hits collection features some of their best songs from the eighties and nineties including: I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, Sweet Jane, Sun Comes Up, It’s Tuesday Morning, Misguided Angel, Cold Tea Blues and Hard to Explain.

This is a perfect collection for relaxing weekend listening!

Greensleeves: Folk Music of the British Isles (2016) by Armonico Consort, Christopher Monks (Genre: a cappella , Classical, Folk):

I don’t usually include an entire AllMusic review in my posting; however, this review, written by James Manheim, is rather amusing and offers a good reason to listen to the set even if you’re not a classical music fan. The review starts off with a long quote by Armonico Consort Director Christopher Monk:

“I first began my fascination with folk melody whilst a music scholar at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where the choir would often sing arrangements to entertain the hoards of inebriated dons after feasts,” writes director Christopher Monks.

“These arrangements — often brilliant, eye opening, and sometimes little gems of genius — were written by my director of studies, Dr. Geoffrey Webber. Quite simply, he took on the work of Vaughan Williams and gave it a new harmonic language inspired by music from the late 20th century.”

Webber is the author of the largest number of folk song arrangements here (all are a cappella); others come from various composers including Monks himself. The title track is elegant, but a better place to start sampling to get a feel for the tonality of the music is perhaps Sweet Kitty (track six), another Webber arrangement. Several pieces, by Stanford, Thomas Morley, and Robert Pearsall, are not folk songs, but are familiar enough to be such, and they function nicely as little touchstones in a program that is far from the set of folk favorites you might imagine. Monks and his ten-voice Armonico Consort achieve a precise sound that brings out the small details that make these arrangements interesting. A rather specialized release, perhaps one for enthusiasts who love the tradition of British choral singing, but one that may also be recommended to all.”

The Message (2018) by The Stanley Clarke Band (Genre: Jazz):

The Message, is the brand new album by Jazz bassist Stanley Clarke whose first album, Children Of Forever, was released in 1973. Clarke has a distinct and innovated slapping style of bass playing and he is at the top of his form on this LP.

Songs in the set include: After the Cosmic Rain/Dance of the Planetary Princesss. The Rugged Treat, The Message, Lost in a World and Alternative Facts.

Recommended CD of the Week:

Live at the Fillmore East 1968 (2018) by The Who:

Live At The Fillmore East is the 50th anniversary of these legendary unreleased recordings from the Fillmore East, New York City, Friday April 5 & Saturday April 6, 1968. Features stunning extended versions of My Generation, A Quick One…, Shakin’ All Over and two ripping versions of Eddie Cochran numbers – Summertime Blues and C’mon Everybody (the latter unavailable elsewhere). The 2 CD version comes in a deluxe edition 6-panel digipak with a 12-page booklet including new liner notes and rare photos.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

My first recommendation for this week is actually an album set issued as one single collection on CD but broken up into two streaming albums by Freegal. The related titles are “America’s Greatest Hits 1957, Volume 1” and “America’s Greatest Hits 1957, Volume 2. And the two streaming collections feature all 120 of the songs to hit the top ten on the Billboard Pop Chart in 1957!

The two album collection offers us a cool listen to a mixture of what today we’d deem vocal and easy listening music, which was the main popular music of the day, and songs in the emerging style of Rock N’ Roll.

America’s Greatest Hits 1957, Volume 1 (1957, 2018) (Genre: Pop, Rock, Classic Rock):

America’s Greatest Hits 1957, Volume 2 (1957, 2018) (Genre: Pop, Rock, Classic Rock):

Songs in the double album streaming collection include: Signing the Blues by Guy Mitchell, The Green Door by Jim Lowe, Butterfly by Andy Williams, Love Me Tender, All Shook Up and Jailhouse Rock by Elvis, Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino and Hey Jealous Lover by Frank Sinatra.

This is a great collection for summer!

Behind The Shade (2018) by James Williamson and the Pink Hearts (Rock, Punk):

Former Stooges guitarist James Williamson steps out with a brand new album. And despite the years that have elapsed since he played with the Stooges – Williamson has retained his fierce in-your-face style of guitar playing.

If you’re a Stooges fan – check out this new release!

Songs on the LP include: Riot on the Strip, Pink Hearts Across the Sky, You Send Me Down, Miss Misery and Revolution Stomp.

Hotel Transylvania Score (Genre: Score, Classical):

Composer Mark Mothersbaugh has created a great score for the films in the Hotel Transylvania series. The score is upbeat, cheerful, majestic and just plain fun.

Songs include: Through The Roof, Battle with Bela, The Mummy Arrives, Monster Festival, Chasing Quasimodo and Dragon Tail/Grandpa Van Helsing.

Complete 1950-1954 Studio-Issued Recordings (with the Stan Kenton Orchestra) by Four Freshmen (Genre: Classic Pop, Easy Listening, Barbershop, Vocal, Big Band):

The original Four Freshmen band formed in 1948 and consisted of brothers Don and Ross Barbour, Bob Flanigan and Hal Kratzsch. In 1950 the group was singing in the Esquire Lounge in Dayton, Ohio when they were heard by big band leader Stan Kenton. Kenton was very impressed by the group and urged his record company, Capital Records, to sign them. The group was indeed signed by Capital Records and their first single, Mr. B’s Blues was released later that year.

The group’s heyday was in the early to mid-fifties when they released hit singles and were one of the front and center pop groups of the day. By the late fifties, as Rock N’ Roll was starting to gain in popularity, vocal groups like the Four Freshman started taking a back seat to new acts like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino. Having said that, the group has remained popular throughout the years and although the last original member of the band, Bob Flanigan, retired in the 1990s the group continues to perform.

This 29 song set includes some of the best songs released by the group in their heyday.

Songs in the set include: Then I’ll Be Happy, Mr. B’s Blues, It’s a Blue World, Tuxedo Junction, The Day Isn’t Long Enough and Seems Like Old Times.

Recommended CD of the Week:

The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie (1962) by Stevie Wonder:

This album was recorded when Stevie Wonder was only 11. And boy, what a genius! The young Stevie showed off his prodigious skill by playing piano, harmonica, percussion instruments and by writing several of the songs on the album.

Wonder is very energetic on this LP and it is a very upbeat album – check it out!

Songs on the album include: Fingertips, The Square, Soul Bongo, Manhattan At Six, Some Other Time and Wondering.

Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions* and one recommended album on CD.

And since we celebrated the 4th of July this week – I’m focusing on traditional Americana music this week! I’ll jump back into recommending modern music next week.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

Stephen Foster by RKO Orchestra:

Despite the bland album cover this is a great collection of songs by the old movie studio – RKO’s orchestra. The collection  features a chorus and orchestra on some songs – others are instrumentals. I can find nothing about this collection online. Freegal lists this LP as having been released by RKO in 2011 this despite the fact that RKO studios, a big player during the Golden Age of Hollywood, was sold to the Disney company in the late fifties.

Having said that, I would guess this collection of songs was probably recorded during the 1940s, and the collection features great songs that have become woven into the American culture tapestry including: Beautiful Dreamer, My Old Kentucky Home, Oh Susanna, Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair and Carry Me Back to Old Virginny.

Freedom: A History Of US – Original Soundtrack Recording:

This is the soundtrack to the PBS series based upon the Joy Hakim book which chronicles American history from 1776 to 2001.

Songs on the soundtrack include: I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free by Nina Simone, Because All Me Are Brothers by Peter, Paul & Mary, The Star Spangled Banner by Duke Ellington, Chimes of Freedom by Bruce Springsteen, America the Beautiful by Keb’ Mo’ , Hard Times by James Taylor and Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland.

Civil War Songs by Traditional Brass Band:

This album was released in 2013 and as with the RKO Stephen Foster collection, I haven’t found any additional information on the album online. What I can tell you is that it offers a nice collection of U.S. Civil War era brass band music. The LP includes the songs: Light Cavalry Overture, Honor to Our Soldiers, Salutation to America, Louisa Polka, Home Again and Martha Quickstep.

Yankee Doodle Dandy (O.S.T – 1942) by Various Artists:

This album is the 1942 RKO soundtrack to the James Cagney film Yankee Doodle Dandy. The film is a fictionalized account of the life of popular entertainer and Broadway musical composer George Cohen of “Born on the 4th of July” fame.

Cohen wrote a number of classic American song including: Over There, Give My Regards to Broadway, You’re a Grand Old Flag and The Yankee Doodle Boy.

Songs on the soundtrack include: Yankee Doodle Dandy, Keep Your Eyes Upon Me, Harrigan, I Was Born in Virginia and Give My Regards to Broadway.

The film Yankee Doodle Dandy has been much less popular in recent years than it once was, probably because it was filmed in black and white. However, if you’ve never seen it – you should check it out as it is fun.

Here’s another neat collection of vintage American songs – some of these go back to the Revolutionary War era; and as with the RKO and Brass Band albums, I didn’t find any relevant details on who is playing the music via online searches, However, this too is a neat collection of classic American folk songs and, overall, ones earlier in vintage than the ones on the other albums I’m recommending this week.

American Masters: Classical Favorites by Various Orchestras & Conductors:

This Time Life collection was originally released via mail order in 1993. The collection features some great twentieth century American music including songs composed by Gershwin, Bernstein and Copland. Songs in the set include: Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue & Catfish Row, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story & Candid Overture and Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring. Various orchestra and conductors are featured.

The Blues Is Alive And Well (2018) by Buddy Guy (Genre: Blues):

Blues guitar master Buddy Guy is 81 years young and is still going strong – his singing and playing is as vibrant as ever and he is still playing concerts and recording. His new album, The Blues Is Alive And Well, was released just last week!

Songs on the album include: A Few Good Years, Guilty As Charged, The Blues Is Alive And Well, Blue No More, Old Fashioned and Ooh Daddy.

Guest musicians appearing on the LP include Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and James Bay.

Mixed Reality (2018) by Gin Blossoms (Genre: Rock, Pop):

The Gin Blossoms first broke into the national music arena in the early nineties, charting with bright pop-rock songs including “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You.”

This new collection of songs has that same bright, upbeat sound and features the songs: Break, Angels Fly, Here Again, Miranda Chicago, Wonder and Forever Is This Night.

Sink or Swim (2007) by the Gaslight Anthem (Genre: Rock):

In his AllMusic biography of Gaslight Anthem Corey Apar describes the music of the band as sounding like “Bruce Springsteen backed by the Clash,” and I have to agree!

If you like the music of Springsteen and the Clash – check out Gaslight Anthem’s music. Sink or Swim is their second album and includes the songs: Boomboxes And Dictionaries, 1930, Red In Morning, I Coulda Been A Contender, We Came To Dance and I’da Called You Woody, Joe.

Audacity (2018) by Buster Williams (Genre: Jazz, Vocal):

Jazz bassist Buster Williams worked for years as a sideman for artists including Jimmy Heath, Gene Ammons, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Williams and Herbie Hancock before stepping out on his own. Today he is a seasoned elder on the jazz scene whose work remains full of vitality.

Songs in this collection include: Where Giants Dwell, Sisko, Stumblin’, Lost on 4th Avenue and Audacity.

Recommended CD of the Week:

The Best of Tuck & Patti (Genre: Jazz, Pop, Vocal, New Age, Easy Listening):

Guitarist Tuck Andress and vocalist Patti Cathcart met in Las Vegas in 1980 and began performing together the next year. They were married in 1983 and worked for a few years on developing their sound before signing their first recording contract with Windham Hill Jazz in 1987. Their music is what I would describe as deep, uncluttered and straight to the point. Tuck studied classical guitar and knows how to create musical depth by playing just a few notes and Patti has a great voice that is right at home singing traditional R&B or Jazz and together they create great music!

This is an older greatest hits collection, released on Windham Hill Jazz, in 1994 and it includes songs from early in their career and gives you a good idea of their sound.

Songs on the LP include: Tears of Joy, Time After Time, Love Warriors, As Time Goes By, Better Than Anything and Little Wing.

Sesame Street: Pete Seeger and Brother Kirk Visit Sesame Street (1974) by Pete Seeger with Douglass Kirkpatrick (Genre: Folk, Pop, Kids):

This collection is full of sing along favorites! Pete Seeger is accompanied by “Brother Kirk” who is better known as the singer and Civil Rights activist Reverend Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick.

And even though the duo are singing with a group of children – the music is great for all ages – a classic folk song sing along.

Songs include: This Land Is Your Land, Michael Row Your Boat Ashore, Skip to My Lou, Garbage, She’ll Be Coming ‘Round The Mountain, The Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly and Ballad of Martin Luther King.

The Essential Son House by Son House by Son House (Genre: Blues, Delta Blues, Acoustic):

One of the quintessential Delta Bluesmen Son House was born Eddie James House Jr. in Riverton, Mississippi in 1901; and along with his contemporaries Charley Patton and Willie Brown set down the foundation for the next generation of Blues players, the ones that went electric – including Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf.

If you’re not familiar with his playing Son House’s music has an earthly accessible quality to it. Deep vocals with an enthusiastic combo strumming and picking acoustic guitar playing, known as bottle neck (or slide) bring an intensity to the music that most modern music simply doesn’t have.

Songs in the collection include: Pearline, Louise McGhee, Empire State Express, Grinnin’ in you Face, Levee Camp Moan, President Kennedy and Yonder Comes My Mother.

Will Bradley and His Jazz Octet (2008) by Will Bradley and His Jazz Octet (Genre: Swing, Boogie-woogie, Jazz, Easy Listening, Instrumental):

Will Bradley was a swing and Boogie-Woogie trombonist and band leader who hailed from New Jersey and rode a wave of popularity during the Swing era of the 1930s and 1940s.

If you like swing – you’ll enjoy this collection!

Songs on the LP include: The Easy Way, Melody from Mars, I’ve Waited For You, I Like The Old Time Way, Sad Spring and Flat Top Special.

The Very Best Of Bonnie Tyler by Bonnie Tyler (Genre: Pop, Rock, Eighties):

Welsh born singer Bonnie Tyler has a very distinctive raspy voice and had several bit hits in her late seventies and eighties heyday including Total Eclipse of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero.

Songs in the set include the aforementioned songs and: Here She Comes, Loving You Is A Dirty Job, Fast Than The Speed Of Night, Straight From The Heart and No Way To Treat A Lady.

Recommended CD of the Week:

If All I Was Is Black (2017) by Mavis Staples (Genre: R&B, Soul, Blues, Pop-Rock, Gospel):

This is a great and hopeful album by the world renowned Staple Singers vocalist and soloist Mavis Staples. Staples is 78 going on 79 but you wouldn’t know it from listening to this album – her singing is vibrant and her songs hopeful – that despite the turbulent times we are living in – her take is we’ll get through them!

Songs on the album include: If All I Was Was Black, Who Told You That, Ain’t No Doubt About It, Build A Bridge and We Go High.

This collection of ghost stories by the classic British author M. R. James is perfect listening material for a summer evening!

The stories in this collection include: A School Story, The Rose Garden, The Tractate Middoth, The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral and Mr. Humphreys and His Inheritance.

Soul Man (1968) by Soul Finders (Genre: R&B, Funk, Soul):

The Soul Finders were led by the great New Orleans songwriter and pianist Eddie Bo and their sound is similar in scope to that of the great music made by Stax label artists in the sixties. If you enjoy horn-centric rock music – this album is for you!

Songs on the LP include: Soul Man, Chain Of Fools, I Got It Bad And That Ain’t Good, Sweet Soul Woman, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and Explosion In My Soul.

The Travelin’ McCourys are a modern string band led by brothers Rob & Ronnie McCoury. Rob & Ronnie are the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury – so great music is a family tradition!

Beck, Bogert, Appice (1973) by Beck, Bogert, Appice (Genre: Rock, Classic Rock):

Guitarist Jeff Beck is joined on this LP by Vanilla Fudge alumni Tim Bogert on bass and Carmine Appice on drums. This album was released in 1973 and is an excellent example of early seventies rock that features loud power guitar style playing.

Songs on the LP Include: Black Cat Moan, Superstition, Sweet Sweet Surrender, Why Should I Care and Livin’ Alone.

Somewhere In The Middle (2009) by Jason Boland & The Stragglers (Genre: Country, Honky Tonk):

Jason Boland & the Stragglers, hail from Oklahoma, and play in what has been deemed the “Red Dirt” style. Red Dirt being defined as a combination of roots rock, classic country & Honky Tonk – to my ears the band simply sounds like great music!

Songs on the LP include: Hank, Somewhere in the Middle, Back to You, Stand up to the Man, Radio’s Misbehaving & Thunderbird Wine.

The Questions (2018) by Kurt Elling (Genre: Jazz, Vocal, Easy Listening):

Kurt Elling is a Chicago based jazz vocalist with a 4 octave range. He opens his brand new album with a neat rendition of Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall. Another great cover song on the album is his version of Paul Simon’s An American Tune. Other songs in the collection include: A Happy Thought, Washing Of The Water, Lonely Town and Endless Lawns.

Between The Notes – Music For Violin and Piano by Daniel Kurganov & Constantine Finehouse (Classical, Violin, Piano, Easy Listening):

The new album by two very talented musicians: violinist Daniel Kurganove and pianist Constatine Firehouse.

Songs on the album include: Violin Sonata No. 2, 5 Melodies, Baal Shem II. Nigun, Valse Sentimentale, Op. 51. No 6, Porgy and Bess (Arr. J Heifetz): Act II, It Ain’t Necessarily So and more.

The Essential Carl Smith by Carl Smith (Genre: Country, Classic Country):

In his 1950s heyday, the honey voiced Carl Smith scored 31 hits and was nicknamed “Mr. Country.”

Smith continued to perform and record in the sixties and seventies, retired in the late seventies and died in 2010 at age 82. Today, Smith is perhaps best known as the first husband of June Carter (Cash) and the father of the country singer Carlene Carter.

If you’re not familiar with his music – give it a listen! His music conjures up a simpler, less complicated era than our own – and there is nothing like classic country music.

This greatest hits collection includes the songs: I Just Dropped In To Say Goodbye, Let’s Live A Little, There’s Nothing As Sweet As My Baby, Mr. Moon, If Teardrops Were Pennies and Me And My Broken heart

This album is a combination score and soundtrack.

The very atmospheric instrumentals on the LP were composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein and harken back to the science fiction films of the 1980s (think E.T.)

Instrumental songs on the album include: Stranger Things, Kids, This Isn’t You, Lay-z-Boy, A Kiss, Castle Byers and more.

Vintage songs on the album are from the period and include: Should I Stay or Should I Go by the Clash, Africa by Toto, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, Hazy Shade of Winter by The Bangles, Every Breath You Take by the Police and Whip It by Devo

High Cumberland Jubliee is festive Key West singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s second album, and his second for the Barnaby Label. Interestingly, Barnaby “lost” the album and only found it and released it after Buffett’s music became popular.

The LP features some great songs including: Rockefeller Square, Bend A Little, High Cumberland Jubliee/Comin’ Down Slow, Dilemma, Livingston’ Gone To Texas, God Down’t Own A Card and The Hangout Gang.

The Essential Babyface by Babyface (Genre: R&B, Pop):

Singer-songwriter & producer Kenneth Edmonds was born in 1959, in Indianapolis and began playing music in his teens. Edmonds gained his stage name, Babyface, while playing with Bootsy Collin’s band. He went on to play with the groups Manchild and Deele and along the way began writing and producing hit songs with his Deele writing partner – L.A. Reed. Some of the many artists that recorded songs co-written and produced by Babyface include: Johnny Gill, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, En Vogue and Bobby Brown.

And in the midst of a very successful career as a song-writer and producer, Babyface even had time to record a few albums of his own! This collection features a number of his best known solo hits including: Every Time I Close My Eyes, When Can I See You, For The Cool in You, My Kinda Girl, Well Alright and The Day.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives by Various Artists:

Clive Davis graduated from law school in 1960 and was first employed by Columbia Records as a contract lawyer – so he didn’t start out with a music career in mind. Davis worked his way up through the music business ranks, eventually working as a producer and, subsequently, taking over as president of CBS Records in 1967. Davis realized how successful CBS Records could become by signing rock groups since this was the era where rock albums were beginning to sell in increasingly large numbers. To that end, Davis signed Santana, The Electric Flag, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Chicago, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and many others before he was dramatically fired for fraud.

Despite being fired by CBS, Davis’s talent for finding and launching new musical talent was too good to be ignored. So Davis went on to work for the music division of Columbia Pictures and was responsible for re-naming it Arista Records. At Arista he continued to sign artists that went on to become internationally famous including Patti Smith, Kenny G, Sarah McLachlan and Whitney Houston.

So perhaps needless to say, Davis is now considered one of the most notable record producers of the recording era.

This collection features a slice of popular songs produced by Davis from the sixties through the nineties. Songs/artists featured in the set include: Piece Of My Heart by Big Brother & The Holding Company, 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago, Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Simon & Garfunkel, Blinded By The Light by Bruce Springsteen, Don’t Cry Out Loud by Melissa Manchester, September by Earth, Wind & Fire, Because The Night by Patti Smith, Freeway of Love by Aretha Franklin, Touch of Grey by the Grateful Dead and more.

Jack Teagarden & His Orchestra: The 1939 Recordings (Genre: Jazz, Classic Jazz):

This collection features a variety of pre-World War II recordings by the great Jazz trombonist and singer Jack Teagarden and his orchestra. Some of the other players featured in this collection include vocalist Jeanie Arnold and musicians Charlie Spivak, Cubby Teagarden, Ernie Caceres and Sid Feller.

This is a solid collection of swinging Jazz music featuring the songs The Sheik of Araby, Red Wing, United We Swing and If It’s Good (I Want It).

Nathaniel Rateliff & his band the Night Sweats hail from Denver, Colorado and play a great blend of roots rock, traditional R&B and folk music. This is the groups second album from 2015 and it is a super fun one for fans of early classic rock and sixties R&B – check it out!
