Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

Heartbreak on a Full Moon (2017) by Chris Brown (Genre: R&B, Pop, Rap):


The new album by the Grammy winning R&B artist. Songs on the LP include: Privacy, Questions, Party, Pills & Automobiles, Summer Breeze, High End and Paradise.

Classical Country (1967) by The Billy Sherrill Quintet (Genre: Country, Classical):


“The audaciousness with which this record was recorded is mind-blowing. Back in the 1960s, when Buck Owens was king of the charts — 12 number one singles in a row — producer Billy Sherrill decided to try to work a little of his own magic with his tunes. How he convinced Epic that a record of classically oriented Owens tunes would sell more copies than to the participating musicians’ — who are not named anywhere on the cover — parents is a mystery. Here are ten Owens classics performed by a harpsichord and a string quartet — with an endorsement by Owens on the back cover! The set opens with a particularly reverent “Act Naturally” that is indicative of the arrangements by Frank Hunter, who thought he was charting incidental music for the theater. This music is so flowery and overly ornate it’s difficult to imagine these ever having been country songs — not to mention the intonation is so awful it’s shrill. But this is part of the album’s charm. This is far from the best/worst of it; “Tiger by the Tail” gets that distinction, as do “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” “Together Again,” and “My Heart Skips a Beat.” But they’re all schmaltzy and ridiculous and only Buck Owens could have been honored by this treatment of his songs. What an awesome record.” AllMusic Review.

The Lonely Things (1966) by Glenn Yarbrough (Genre: Folk, Pop, Easy Listening):


Vintage easy listening music featuring Glenn Yarbrough’s smooth vocals and lush strings. Songs on the album include: Night Song, So Long San Francisco, The Word Before Goodbye, Hello, People Change and The Summertime of Days.

Thanks, Hank! (1967) By Jeannie Seely (Genre: Country, Classic Country): 


Sultry classic country singer Jeannie Seely offers up a bouncy, classic sixties collection of songs including: A Wanderin’ Man, A Little Bitty Tear, Funny Way of Laughing, Everything I Had and Make the World

Guitars Extraordinary (1966) by The Fabulous Jokers (Genre: Instrumental, Classic Rock):


And this week I’m staying in the sixties! This Fabulous Jokers instrumental LP sound like a mixture between the music of the Ventures and the instrumental albums put out in the fifties and sixties by artists like Henry Mancini and Percy Faith. The rock instrumental instruments are there, guitar, bass drums and so are the soft background “ooos” and “ahhs.”

This is another great album to stream as back ground music for your weekend activities – especially reading!

Songs in the collection include; Umoresco, Diamond Strings, Perdido, Instant Coffee, Harry Lime Theme, Down by The Riverside, Greyhound Express and Caravan.

CD of the Week:

Freight Train And Other North Carolina Folk Songs And Tunes (1958/2002) by Elizabeth Cotton:


“Recorded in 1957 and early 1958 by Mike Seeger, Freight Train and Other North Carolina Folk Songs and Tunes collects the influential debut sides cut by a then-62-year-old Elizabeth Cotten; even decades after their first release, they remain a veritable primer in the art of finger-picked style guitar playing. The quaint, homespun quality of the material — much of it recorded at Cotten’s home with her grandchildren looking on in silence — adds immensely to its intimacy and warmth; the sound quality varies wildly from track to track, but the amazing instrumental work shines through regardless on tracks like the opening “Wilson Rag” and the now-standard “Freight Train.”” All Music

Private Eyes (1981) by Daryl Hall & John Oats (Genre: Pop): 

One of the duo’s classic albums, Private Eyes includes the songs: Private Eyes, Looking for a Good Sign, I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do), Did It in a Minute, Friday Let Me Down and Tell Me What You Want.

Ravel: Shéhérazade, M. 41 – Berlioz: La mort de Cléopâtre, H 36 (Remastered) by Leonard Bernstein (Genre: Classical):


Mezo-soprano Jennie Tourel with Lenoard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Epic Singles (1968/2017) by The Swampseeds (Genre: Rock, Classic Rock):


The Swampseeds were from New Jersey and originally consisted of Dennis Ferrante on vocals, Richard LePage on organ, Eddie Leonetti on bass, Tommy Brannick on drums and Jack Santoro on lead guitar.

The group recorded a number of singles that have that cool late sixties rock sound to them but the group broke up before they were able to record an album. This LP features all their singles and was released at the end of last year. Songs on the LP include: Can I Carry Your Ballon, Coney Island Parade, Love Is On The Way, Plastic Man and Can I Help You.

Gunhill Road by Gunhill Road (1973) (Genre: Rock, Classic Rock, Seventies Pop):


Gunhill Road was rock group, that according to the Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, included Glenn Leopold, Steven Goldrich and Gil Roman.

The band recorded one self-titled album – Gunhill Road, which the AllMusic review describes as a “collection of mellow introspective pop songs” with one novelty hit – the tune “Back When My Hair Was Short” which was released in June 1973.

Other songs on the album include: Sailing, 42nd Street, Mr. Keyboards, She Made a Man Out of Me, Callin’ Atlanta and We Can’t Ride This Roller Coaster Anymore.

This is a fun album check it out!

CD of the Week:

Sunken Condos (2012) by Donald Fagen (Genre: Pop, Rock, Jazz):


This 2012 Donald Fagen album may not officially be a Steely Dan LP but it nevertheless has that same cool jazz-pop feel to it.

Songs on the LP include: Slinky Thing, I’m Not the Same Without You, Weather in My Head, Out of the Ghetto and Miss Marlene.

This is a perfect album to stream on a wintery January weekend!

Joey. Monk. Live! by Joey Alexander (2017) (Genre: Jazz):


Joey Alexander is a 14 year old pianist from Indonesia. His new album features live performances recorded on his most recent tour. Songs on the LP include: Round Midnight, Ugly Beauty, Rhythm-a-Ning, Pannonica and Evidence.

Age Don’t Mean A Thing by Robert Finley (2016) (Genre: Blues, R&B):


Singer-songwriter Robert Finley hails from Bernice, Louisiana. And Age Don’t Mean A Thing is his latest album.

Songs on the LP include: Age Don’t Mean A Thing, I Just Want To Tell You, Let Me Be Your Everything, It’s Too Late and You Make Me Want to Dance.

In Trance by Scorpions (1975) (Rock, Heavy Metal):


Scorpions are a German band that originally formed in 1969 and they were one of the first generation Heavy Metal bands. The group has featured a number of members over the years with two constants — vocalist Klaus Meine and guitarist Rudolph Schenker who have appeared on every Scorpions album.

In Trance is a classic LP by the band and includes the songs: Dark Lady, In Trance, Life’s Like A River, Robot Man and Night Lights.

The Singles 1968-1976 by Lee Arnold (2017) (Genre: Country, Classic Country):


Lee Arnold was born, raised and began his broadcasting career in Scranton, PA. He is best known as one of the most popular disc jockey who ever worked at WHN New York and was inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame in 2002. Additionally, he recorded five songs himself between 1968 and 1976 and all of them are included in this collection: Mama’s Boy, Mama Sang a Song, A Trucker’s Christmas, That Good Old Gospel Music and Another Day Without You.

The Americana Sessions by The Nelons (2017) (Genre: Folk):


The Nelons consist of Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband Jason Clark and her daughters Amber Nelon Thompson and Autumn Nelon Clark.

The Nelons generally sing gospel but with this LP they’ve turned their attentions to classic American folk music.

Songs on the LP include: Gentle on My Mind, You Needed Me, Daddy and Son, Bridge over Troubled Waters, Oh, Shenandoah, An American Trilogy and Mama Tried.

CD of The Week:

Bidin’ My Time by Chris Hillman (2017) (Genre: Folk, Folk-Rock, Country-Rock):


Chris Hillman, whose credits include co-founding Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Byrds, as well as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas and Desert Rose Band, is truly one of the architects of American music. His newest solo work, Bidin’ My Time, produced by Tom Petty and executive-produced by Herb Pedersen, captures a rarity: an icon who has never sounded better, making music with old friends for the sheer love of it. Collaborators and admirers from Hillman’s storied career appear throughout the record: Tom Petty; Hillman’s Byrds bandmates David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Steve Ferrone; Desert Rose Band’s John Jorgenson, Pedersen, and Jay Dee Maness; premier upright bassist Mark Fain; singer/guitarist Josh Jové; and fiddler Gabe Witcher. The album kicks off with a new recording of Pete Seeger’s and Welsh poet Idris Davies’ ‘The Bells of Rhymney,’ which the Byrds recorded for their debut. ‘Here She Comes Again’ was co-written by Hillman and McGuinn and, until now, had only been recorded on a live Byrds album in Australia. ‘She Don’t Care About Time’ was written by Byrds co-founder Gene Clark, and was the original B-side to ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ Covers of the Everly Brothers’ ‘Walk Right Back’ and Petty’s ‘Wildflowers’ round out this understated yet undeniable masterpiece. Folk, rock and roll, bluegrass and the unmistakable country-rock Hillman himself helped pioneer come together seamlessly on the triumph that is Bidin’ My Time. – From the record label.

Don’t Go Baby It’s Gonna Get Weird Without You by Porter and The Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes (2017) (Genre: Country):

Porter & the Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes consisted of singer-songwriter Chris Porter, singer, mandolin player and bassist Mitchell Vandenburg and drummer Adam Nurre. The group completed this LP earlier this year; however, before it was released they were visited by tragedy. On October 19, 2017, the band was involved in an automobile accident and Porter and Vandeburg were killed. Adam Nurre was injured in the crash but survived; thus this LP is both the debut album and swansong by the group.

Songs on the LP include: Bittersweet Creek, Your Hometown, Edith, When We Were Young, November Down and East December.

At The Third Stroke by Russ Ballard (1978) (Genre: Rock):

Russ Ballard first came to prominence as the lead singer for the classic rock band Argent. While with Argent he wrote and sang one of their best known songs – God Gave Rock N’ Roll To You. And then he launched a solo career. 1978’s At The Third Stroke is his most critically acclaimed solo LP to date.

The album features the songs: Dancer, Helpless, Cast the Spirit, Look at Her Dance, What Does It Take and My Judgment Day.

Jazz on Film (Beat, Square & Cool), Vol. 1-5 by Various Artists (Genre: Jazz, Soundtracks):

This streaming collection featuring 83 songs, is just like the title says – a mixture of beat, square and cool jazz from a variety of films made during fifties and sixties.

Songs featured in the set include: The Wild One and Blues for Brando by Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra, The Crime by Los Angeles Music Festival Jazz Orchestra, Theme from I Want to Live by Gerry Mulligan’s Jazz Combo, Stakeout by Johnny Mandel & his Orchestra and Guitar Amour by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn.

King Size! by Andre Previn’s Jazz Trio (1958) (Genre: Jazz):

On this LP, the very talented Andre Previn is working as the leader of a Jazz trio which includes Previn on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Frankie Capp on drums.

Songs on this classic album include: You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To, It Could Happen To you, I’ll Remember Paris and I’m Beginning To See The Light.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Original Soundtrack by Various Artists (1975) (Genre: Soundtracks, Humor):

The classic soundtrack from 1975, includes the songs: Dammit Janet by Barry Bostwick & Susan Sarandon, Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul by Meatloaf, I Can Make You A Man by Tim Curry and Super Heroes by Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon & Charles Gray.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (2010) (Genre: Pop, Rock):

Arcade Fire is a Montreal based indie band consisting  of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne on vocals, Richard Parry on organ, Tim Kingsbury on bass and  William Butler on synthesizer and drums.

The Suburbs is their third LP released in 2010. Songs on the LP include: The Suburbs, Suburban War, Month of May, Wasted Hours, We Used to Wait and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).

CD of the Week:

The Book of Secrets by Loreena McKennitt (1997) (Genre: New Age, Folk, Pop, International):

Canadian singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt’s music is aptly described as deep, ethereal folk music. If you’re in the mood for thoughtful, reflective music than this album is for you!

This is McKennitt’s sixth LP and it includes the songs: The Mummer’s Dance, Marco Polo, The Highwayman, La Serenissima and Night Ride Across the Caucasus.

Losing Sleep by Chris Young (Genre: Country):

Chris Young is the grandson of Richard Yates who performed on the old time radio and TV show Louisiana Hayride which was broadcast from Shreveport, Louisiana from 1948-1960. So Young has solid country music roots. His 2017 release Losing Sleep is his seventh album and features the songs: Radio and the Rain, Where I Go When I Drink, Holiday and She’s Got a Way.

Cheap Trick by Cheap Trick (Genre: Rock):

This is Cheap Trick’s self-titled debut album original released in 1977. Cheap Trick plays a blend of classic and seventies power rock – prefect arena style rock. And if you can’t catch them in concert you can listen to their music via Freegal!

Songs on this album include: ELO Kiddies, Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School, Cry, Cry, Hot Love and Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace.

Letters Never Read by Dori Freeman (Genre: Folk/Country/Pop):

This is singer songwriter Dori Freeman’s second album. Her style has foundation layers in folk and country music. Songs on this 2017 release include: If I Could Make You My Own, Lovers on the Run, Cold Waves, Turtle Dove and That’s Alright.

An Introduction to Lightnin’ Hopkins by Lightnin’ Hopkins (Genre: Blues):

Singer and guitarist Sam “Lighnin;” Hopkins hailed from Texas and was an outstanding blues musician whose career spanned more than fifty years from the 1920s to the early 1980s. This set offers a solid introduction to Hopkins’s work and includes the songs: Mr. Charlie (Parts 1 & 2), You Got to Work to Get Your Pay, Vietnam War Blues (Parts 1 & 2) & Rock Me Mamma.

Belafonte Returns to Carnegie Hall by Harry Belafonte (Genre: Vocal, International, Popular):

This classic concert took place on May 2, 1960. Belafonte was joined by a number of other great musicians and singers for this show including Odetta, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Miriam Makeba & the Belafonte Folks Singers. This is a really fun album full of great music! Songs include: Jump Down, Spin Around, Suzanne, Vaichaskem, Water Boy, Ballad of Sigmund Freud and I’ve Been Driving on Bald Mountain.

Halloween Stomp: A Haunted House Party by Various Artists (Genre: Swing, Jazz, Popular):

This collection of “spooky” performances is dominated by songs dealing with ghosts and monsters, everything from “Mysterious Mose” and “Got the Jitters” to “Zombie,” “Skeleton in the Closet,” “The Ghost of Smokey Joe” and “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm.” Most of the music is from the swing era with such bands as those led by Red Nichols, Don Redman, Glen Gray, Louis Prima, Ozzie Nelson, Cab Calloway, Tommy Dorsey and even Rudy Vallee alternating with much more obscure groups. The producers at Jass have also “enhanced” the music by inserting odd sound effects between songs. This CD certainly qualifies as the definitive (and also only) Halloween jazz album. Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

1. Grant Hart & Husker Du:

Last week that Grant Hart, best known as the lead singer, songwriter and drummer for the 1980s punk group Husker Du died after a battle with cancer.

If you’re not familiar with his work it sounds like the epitome of 1980s punk rock – glossy and fresh and similar in scope to the work of R.E.M. and it is definitely worth checking out.

The Freegal Music Catalog features several albums by Husker Du and Grant Hart’s solo album debut too.

So I’m going to recommend three albums that feature Grant Hart’s music and if you like the first one, Husker Du’s 1984 release Flip Your Wig, then you’ll the other two as well – Husker Du’s 1985 album Zen Arcade and Hart’s first solo album, 1989’s Intolerance.

Flip Your Wig by Husker Du:

Songs include: Flip Your Wig, Every Everything, Makes No Sense At All & The Wit & The Wisdom.

Zen Arcade by Husker Du:

Songs include: Something I Learned Today, Never Talking To You Again, Dreams Reoccurring & What’s Going On.

Intolerance by Grant Hart:

2. Ain’t Goin’ That Way by Hokum Boys and “Banjo Joe” Gus Cannon (Genre: Blues):

The Hokum Boys were a group that played in the twenties and early thirties. The core members of the band were of pianist Alex Hill and guitarists Dan Roberts and Alex Robinson.

And a note on the word “Hokum, “Hokum” was a term from the ’20s used to describe music full of double entendres dealing with sex, drinking and drugs, and thus no respectable person from the period would be caught dead listening to it! This compilation includes 20 tracks from the Hokum Boys, Banjo Joe and Blind Blake, featuring Hokum Blues; Gambler’s Blues; Selling That Stuff; Jonestown Blues; He’s in the Jailhouse Now, and more.

3. Little Girl by Syndicate Of Sound (Genre: Classic Rock/Sixties Pop):

Syndicate of Sound was a mid-sixties band from San Jose, California and consisted of Don Basking on guitar and vocals, Bob Gonzalez on guitar, Larry Ray on lead guitar, John Sharkey on keyboards and John Ducksworth on drums.

Their music is great traditional rock that sounds like it was made in the mid-sixties; and as the LP was released in 1966 that is right on the proverbial money!

Songs in include: Big Boss Man, Almost Grown, Little Girl, Lookin’ for the Good Times and Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby.

4. You Ain’t Talkin’ To Me: Charlie Poole And The Roots Of Country Music by Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers (Genre: Country/Folk):

This set includes 45 songs recorded by Poole between 1925 and 1931. Today we’d call this music old time country or perhaps Americana – but whatever designation we use – it is great early country music with banjos and fiddles front and center.

Songs include: Shootin’ Creek, There’ll Come a Time, White House Blues, Hungry Hash House, & Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down Blues.

5. Open Book by Fred Hersch:

This album is a brand new release by jazz pianist, composer, educator and activist Fred Hersh and includes the songs: The Orb, Whisper Not, Zingaro, Plainsong, Eronel and more.

CD Recommendation of the Week:

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised by Gil Scott-Heron:

This collection features some of poet, activist and rap progenitor Gil Scott-Heron’s best music from the early seventies.

Songs include: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, The Get Out of the Ghetto Blues, Lady Day and John Coltrane and Whitey on the Moon.
