Hi everyone, Freegal Music Service has been upgraded, it has a brand new look and now features playlists by category!

So this week I’m going to suggest several of the new playlists for your weekend listening pleasure.

I will also recommend a couple of large CD box sets to round things off nicely!

Jazz Classics (89 Songs):

Traditional Folk (89 Songs):

The Traditional Folk playlist features classic artists from the 1930s and 1940s as well as artists from the sixties folk explosion.

Appalachian Road Trip (76 Songs):

The Appalachian Road Trip Playlist features folk, pop and country music and includes songs by The Wailin’ Jennys, Noah Gundersen, The Civil Wars, Ryan Bingham, The Avett Brothers, Lonesome River Band, Railroad Earth, The Gourds, The Carolina Chocolate Drops and many other artists.

80’s (82 Songs):

The 80s playlist features songs by Billy Joel, Air Supply, Bonnie Tyler, Bow Wow Wow, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Money, Europe, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Gloria Estefan, Men at Work and many others.

Coffee House (75 Songs):

(I’d describe this as a modern pop/R&B coffee house playlist and not a traditional folk music based playlist – just FYI!)

The playlist features songs by Oddisee, Caitlyn Smith, Grace VanderWaal, Hozier, Leon Bridges, London Grammar, Childish Gambinio, Maxwell, Sade and more.

CD Box Sets of the Week:

Since the recommend playlists for this week all contain dozes of songs I thought I’d recommend some CD box sets for your weekend listening pleasure!

And on that note, you can drop in on Saturday and check out some CDs as the library is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays!

And you may not know this, but we have some CD sets that are actually too big to be displayed in our CD Section so they are actually housed in the grey cabinet behind the Circulation Desk.

Jimmie Driftwood Six Classic Albums Plus Bonus Singles (Genre: Folk, Traditional Country, Americana, Pop):

Jimmie Driftwood was a mid-twentieth century singer-songwriter best known for writing the hit song The Battle of New Orleans which was a big hit for Johnny Horton in the early sixties.

This collection features the following four albums: The Westward Movement (1959), Tall Tales In Song (1960), Songs Of Billy Yank, Johnny Reb (1961) and Driftwood At Sea (1962).

The New Lost City Ramblers Six Classic Albums (Genre: Folk, Traditional Folk, Old Time Music):

The New Lost City Ramblers originally included Mike Seeger, John Cohen and Tom Paley.

This set includes the following albums: The New Lost City Ramblers Volume 1 (1958), the New Lost City Ramblers Volume 2 (1958), Songs From The Depression (1959), The New Lost City Ramblers Volume 3 (1961), The New Lost City Ramblers Volume 4 (1961) and American Moonshine And Prohibition (1962).

Note: The album cover shows Mike Seeger, John Cohen and Tracy Schwarz which is a tad misleading as these are the earliest recordings by the group and feature Mike Seeger, John Cohen and Tom Paley who doesn’t appear on the album cover but is on all the albums. Tracy Schwartz replaced Paley in the group in 1962.

Odetta Seven Classic Albums Plus Radio Tracks (Genre: Folk, Blues, Gospel):

This collection by the legendary folk singer and Civil Rights activist features the following albums: The Tin Angel (1954), My Eyes Have Seen (1959), Odetta Sings Ballads And Blues (1956), At the Gate of Horn (1958), Christmas Spirituals (1960), Ballad for Americans And Other American Ballads (1960) and Odetta at Carnegie Hall (1960) .

Pete Seeger: Four Classic Albums Plus Rare Live Recordings (Genre: Folk):

This set includes four albums by the legendary Pete Seeger include: American Ballads (1957), American Favorite Ballads Volume 1 (1957), Rainbow Quest (1960) & Indian Summer (1961).

The Weavers Six Classic Albums (Genre: Folk):

The Weavers included Pete Seeger, Lee Hayes, Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman.

The six classic albums in this collection include: The Weavers at Carnegie Hall (1957), Traveling on with The Weavers (1957), The Weavers at Home (1958), Folk Songs Around the World (1959), The Weavers at Carnegie Hall Vol 2 (1959) and The Weavers Almanac (1963).

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

Modern Lore (2018) by Julian Lage (Genre: Jazz, Instrumental):

Julian Lage was born on December 25, 1987 and was a child prodigy who learned to play the guitar by the age of five. As a child he played with a number of world renowned musicians including: Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, Toots Thielemans, David Grisman and others. In 1997, he was the focus of the Academy Award Winning documentary Jules at Eight.

So we can safely say this young man can really play the guitar!

Lage’s Modern Lore LP features the following songs: The Ramble, Atlantic Limited, General Thunder, Splendor Riot, Look Book and Whatever You Say, Henry.

Hallelujah Nights (2018) by LANCO (Genre: Country, Pop, Rock):

LANCO, which is short for Lancaster & Company, is a quintet featuring Brandon Lancaster on vocals, Eric Steedly on guitar, Jared Hampton on keyboard, Chandler Baldwin on bass and Tripp Howell on drums.

The group’s music can aptly be described as feel good country-rock – which is always fun!

Hallelujah Nights is the band’s 2018 release and it features the songs: Born to Love You, Long Live Tonight, Greatest Love Story, We Do, Singin’ at the Stars and Middle of the Night.

Coming Home (2015) by Leon Bridges (Genre: Soul, R&B, Pop):

AllMusic aptly describes Bridges as a “Singer, songwriter, and guitarist who emerged on Columbia in 2015 with a rich retro-soul sound.”

I agree with that assessment 100%. This is a lovely album – if you like classic soul and R&B it is right down your street! And I can’t believe that Bridges is as young as he is! He was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1989! But, wow, listening to this album you get the impression he would have been right at home playing R&B in the 1960s.

Songs on the LP include: Coming Home, Better Man, Brown Skin Girl, Smooth Sailin’, Shine, Flowers and Twistin’ & Groovin’

100 Hits Vintage Nº1 (Genre: Vintage, Vocal, Pop):

This collection features one hundred hits from the golden age of pop! Artists featured in this collection include Doris Day, The McGuire Sisters, Paul Anka, Judy Garland, Betty Johnson, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Cleo Laine, Billie Holiday and many more.

Songs in the collection include: Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) by Doris Day, Brother Bill by Bing Crosby & Louis Armstrong, Sway by Rosemary Clooney with Perez Prado and His Orchestra, Rum and Coca Cola by The Andrew Sisters, Besame Mucho by Eyde Gorme and Steve Lawrence, Frenesi by The Four Freshman and more.

Bonus Streaming Suggestion:

Snake Drive by Eric Clapton from the V/A Collection The Beginning (Genre: Blues, Blues-Rock, Rock, Classic Rock):

The Freegal Music Catalog mainly features music from SONY Records and its offshoots so there isn’t much music by Eric Clapton in the catalog.

However, since today, March 30, is Eric Clapton’s 73rd birthday, I’m going to recommend you give a listen to one of the two instrumental tunes he did early in his career that appear on this LP: Freightloader or Snake Drive. The songs are from a various artists collection with a long name: The Beginning: Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Jimmy Page. Masterpieces, Vol. 1 (Remastered). And the collection features some neat songs but a couple that have less than stellular sound quality so those that value pristine sound quality beware!

CD of the Week:

Trumpet Blues The Best of Harry James (Genre: Swing, Pop, Traditional Jazz):

Harry James was an enthusiastic trumpet player and band leader. Indeed, he ran one of the most popular bands of the Swing Era. He even hired a young and unknown singer for his band – one that in short order became a household name – Frank Sinatra.

Trumpet Blues features recordings of songs that James first recorded in the 1930s and 1940s. The sound quality of many of those early recordings wasn’t so hot so James re-recorded them with more higher end equipment in the 1950s.

Songs on the LP include: Trumpet Blues, Moten Swing, I’m Beginning To See The Light, Sleepy Lagoon, I’ve Heard That Song Before and It’s Been A Long, Long Time.

17th Avenue Revival (2018) The Oak Ridge Boys (Genre: Gospel/Country):

The Oak Ridge Boys have gone back to their Gospel roots with their new LP.

Progressions: 100 Years Of Jazz Guitar by Various Artists (Genre: Jazz):

This Columbia Records collection features more than 60 songs featuring vintage jazz guitarists.

The First Edition (1967) by The First Edition (Genre: Pop, Rock, Country):

The First Edition was also known as Kenny Rogers and The First Edition and featured Thelma Camacho on lead vocals, Kenny Rogers on lead vocals and bass, Terry Williams on guitar and vocals, Mike Settle on guitar and Mickey Jones on drums.

This is their first album and it features the songs: Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In), I Get a Funny Feeling, Ticket to Nowhere, Hurry Up Love, If Wishes Were Horses and Shadow in the Corner of Your Mind.

Cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser hail from Croatia and landed a recording contract after more than 6 million people viewed their classical version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” on YouTube.

Score is their new album and it features songs that will be familiar to TV and movie fans including: Game of Thrones Medley, May It Be, Love Story, Moon River, Rain Man Theme, Cavatina and Titles from Chariots of Fire.

Leonard Cohen Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 by Leonard Cohen:


On August 31, 1970, 35-year-old Leonard Cohen was awakened at 2 a.m. from a nap in his trailer and brought onstage to perform with his band at the third annual Isle Of Wight music festival. The audience of 600,000 was in a fiery and frenzied mood, after turning the festival into a political arena, trampling the fences, setting fire to structures and equipment- and stoked by the most incendiary performance of Jimi Hendrix’s career. As Cohen followed Hendrix’s set, onlookers (and fellow festival headliners) Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and others stood sidestage in awe as the Canadian Folk singer/songwriter and poet/novelist quietly tamed the crowd. – From the liner notes

The Halifax Three formed in Montreal in 1960 and consisted of singers Pat LaCroix, Richard Byrne and Denny Doherty.

The group released several folk albums before splitting up in 1965 and Doherty went on to co-found both the Mugwumps and The Mamas and The Papas.

Songs of the album include: San Francisco Bay Blues, Rocks and Gravel, Little Sparrow, East Virginia and Rubin Had a Train.

Johnny Mathis Sings The Great New American Songbook (2017) by Johnny Mathis: 


The latest album by the great balladeer.

Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

The Complete Columbia Recording Sessions, Vol. 1 – 1929-1937 (Genre: Swing, Jazz, Blues, Vocal) by Mildred Bailey:

Mildred Bailey was a popular singer during the 1930s and 1940s and became known as “The Queen of Swing.”

Unfortunately she died young, while only in her 40s, so she is not as well known today as she might otherwise have been. This is the first of three great sets of Bailey’s complete recordings put out by Columbia Records.

And just a note on the sound quality – most of the songs sound really good but a few of the alternate takes show their age so those who greatly prefer pristine sound quality beware!

Some of the songs in this 62 song collection include: What Kind O’ Man Is You, I Like to Do Things For You, Is That Religion? Harlem Lullaby, Lazybones and Someday Sweetheart.

Play Deep by The Outfield (1985) (Genre: Pop, Rock):

The Outfield is a London based band consisting of singer & bassist Tony Lewis, guitarist and keyboardist John Spinks and drummer Alan Jackson.

Play Deep is the band’s debut LP and it is a great example of 1980s pop! The LP contains the songs: Your Love, Every Time You Cry, Talk to Me and Taking My Chances, and of course, their big hit All The Love In The World.

A Thousand Hearts (2014) by Cara Dillon (Genre: Folk, International):

Cara Dillon was born in Dungiven, Ireland in 1975 and began her music career in 1989. Her music has a bright breezy modern folk sound to it.

Songs on this upbeat LP include: Jacket so Blue, Bright Morning Star, Moolough Mary, Shotgun Down the Avalanche, River Run and The Shores of Lough Bran.

Monk’s Dream (1962) by The Thelonious Monk Quartet (Genre: Jazz):

This is the debut LP by The Thelonious Monk Quartet. The band featured Thelonious Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on sax, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums.

Songs on this classic album include: Monk’s Dream, Bright Mississippi, Five Spot Blues, Just a Gigolo and Sweet and Lovely.

CD of the Week:

Quiet Nights (2009) by Diana Krall (Genre: Vocal, Jazz)

A fun album by the Jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall.

Too Marvelous for Words, Walk on By, The Boy from Ipanema, So Nice, Guess I’ll Hang My Tears out To Dry and Every Time We Say Goodbye.

That’s The Way Of The World (1975) by Earth, Wind & Fire (Genre: Funk, R&B, Pop):


EW&F was formed by the talented multi-instrumentalist Maurice White and put out some fantastic albums in their 1970s heyday. That’s The Way Of The World is their most popular & bestselling LP originally released in 1975.

Songs on the LP include: Shining Star, That’s The Way Of The World, Happy Feelin’, Reasons, See The Light, Caribou Chaser and All About Love.

The Beautiful & Damned (2017) by G-Eazy (Genre: Rap):


Rapper G-Eazy hails from the Bay Area and this is his fifth album.

Songs on the LP include: Him & I, Sober, Pray For Me, Legend, But A Dream, That’s A Lot and Pick me Up.

Walls (2016) by Kings of Leon (Genre: Rock):


A four piece family group from Tennessee, Kings of Leon consists of three Followill brothers and a cousin; Caleb (guitar), Jared (bass) and Nathan (drums) Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill. The band plays an unpolished and easy accessible style of rock. Walls is their most recent LP and includes the songs: Reverend, Find Me, Over, Muchacho, Conversation Piece, Eyes on You and Wild

Wednesday Morning 3AM (1964) by Simon & Garfunkel (Genre: Folk):


This is the very first album released by Simon & Garfunkel in March of 1964 only a month after The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and right in the middle of the sixties folk boom. This album is different from any other album S&G ever released because it truly is a folk album. By the time the duo released their next LP, The Sound of Silence, they had transitioned to play Folk Rock.

Songs on the LP include the original version of the Sound of Silence, Bleecker Street, He Was My Brother, Go Tell it On The Mountain, The Times They Are A-Changin’ and Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.

Heartbreak on a Full Moon (2017) by Chris Brown (Genre: R&B, Pop, Rap):


The new album by the Grammy winning R&B artist. Songs on the LP include: Privacy, Questions, Party, Pills & Automobiles, Summer Breeze, High End and Paradise.

Classical Country (1967) by The Billy Sherrill Quintet (Genre: Country, Classical):


“The audaciousness with which this record was recorded is mind-blowing. Back in the 1960s, when Buck Owens was king of the charts — 12 number one singles in a row — producer Billy Sherrill decided to try to work a little of his own magic with his tunes. How he convinced Epic that a record of classically oriented Owens tunes would sell more copies than to the participating musicians’ — who are not named anywhere on the cover — parents is a mystery. Here are ten Owens classics performed by a harpsichord and a string quartet — with an endorsement by Owens on the back cover! The set opens with a particularly reverent “Act Naturally” that is indicative of the arrangements by Frank Hunter, who thought he was charting incidental music for the theater. This music is so flowery and overly ornate it’s difficult to imagine these ever having been country songs — not to mention the intonation is so awful it’s shrill. But this is part of the album’s charm. This is far from the best/worst of it; “Tiger by the Tail” gets that distinction, as do “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” “Together Again,” and “My Heart Skips a Beat.” But they’re all schmaltzy and ridiculous and only Buck Owens could have been honored by this treatment of his songs. Vintage easy listening music featuring Glenn Yarbrough’s smooth vocals and lush strings. Songs on the album include: Night Song, So Long San Francisco, The Word Before Goodbye, Hello, People Change and The Summertime of Days.

Thanks, Hank! (1967) By Jeannie Seely (Genre: Country, Classic Country): 


Sultry classic country singer Jeannie Seely offers up a bouncy, classic sixties collection of songs including: A Wanderin’ Man, A Little Bitty Tear, Funny Way of Laughing, Everything I Had and Make the World

Guitars Extraordinary (1966) by The Fabulous Jokers (Genre: Instrumental, Classic Rock):


And this week I’m staying in the sixties! This Fabulous Jokers instrumental LP sound like a mixture between the music of the Ventures and the instrumental albums put out in the fifties and sixties by artists like Henry Mancini and Percy Faith. The rock instrumental instruments are there, guitar, bass drums and so are the soft background “ooos” and “ahhs.”

This is another great album to stream as back ground music for your weekend activities – especially reading!

Songs in the collection include; Umoresco, Diamond Strings, Perdido, Instant Coffee, Harry Lime Theme, Down by The Riverside, Greyhound Express and Caravan.

CD of the Week:

Freight Train And Other North Carolina Folk Songs And Tunes (1958/2002) by Elizabeth Cotton:


“Recorded in 1957 and early 1958 by Mike Seeger, Freight Train and Other North Carolina Folk Songs and Tunes collects the influential debut sides cut by a then-62-year-old Elizabeth Cotten; even decades after their first release, they remain a veritable primer in the art of finger-picked style guitar playing. The quaint, homespun quality of the material — much of it recorded at Cotten’s home with her grandchildren looking on in silence — adds immensely to its intimacy and warmth; the sound quality varies wildly from track to track, but the amazing instrumental work shines through regardless on tracks like the opening “Wilson Rag” and the now-standard “Freight Train.”” All Music

Don’t Go Baby It’s Gonna Get Weird Without You by Porter and The Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes (2017) (Genre: Country):

Porter & the Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes consisted of singer-songwriter Chris Porter, singer, mandolin player and bassist Mitchell Vandenburg and drummer Adam Nurre. The group completed this LP earlier this year; however, before it was released they were visited by tragedy. On October 19, 2017, the band was involved in an automobile accident and Porter and Vandeburg were killed. Adam Nurre was injured in the crash but survived; thus this LP is both the debut album and swansong by the group.

Songs on the LP include: Bittersweet Creek, Your Hometown, Edith, When We Were Young, November Down and East December.

At The Third Stroke by Russ Ballard (1978) (Genre: Rock):

Russ Ballard first came to prominence as the lead singer for the classic rock band Argent. While with Argent he wrote and sang one of their best known songs – God Gave Rock N’ Roll To You. And then he launched a solo career. 1978’s At The Third Stroke is his most critically acclaimed solo LP to date.

The album features the songs: Dancer, Helpless, Cast the Spirit, Look at Her Dance, What Does It Take and My Judgment Day.

Jazz on Film (Beat, Square & Cool), Vol. 1-5 by Various Artists (Genre: Jazz, Soundtracks):

This streaming collection featuring 83 songs, is just like the title says – a mixture of beat, square and cool jazz from a variety of films made during fifties and sixties.

Songs featured in the set include: The Wild One and Blues for Brando by Shorty Rogers & His Orchestra, The Crime by Los Angeles Music Festival Jazz Orchestra, Theme from I Want to Live by Gerry Mulligan’s Jazz Combo, Stakeout by Johnny Mandel & his Orchestra and Guitar Amour by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn.

King Size! by Andre Previn’s Jazz Trio (1958) (Genre: Jazz):

On this LP, the very talented Andre Previn is working as the leader of a Jazz trio which includes Previn on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Frankie Capp on drums.

Songs on this classic album include: You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To, It Could Happen To you, I’ll Remember Paris and I’m Beginning To See The Light.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Original Soundtrack by Various Artists (1975) (Genre: Soundtracks, Humor):

The classic soundtrack from 1975, includes the songs: Dammit Janet by Barry Bostwick & Susan Sarandon, Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul by Meatloaf, I Can Make You A Man by Tim Curry and Super Heroes by Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon & Charles Gray.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire (2010) (Genre: Pop, Rock):

Arcade Fire is a Montreal based indie band consisting  of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne on vocals, Richard Parry on organ, Tim Kingsbury on bass and  William Butler on synthesizer and drums.

The Suburbs is their third LP released in 2010. Songs on the LP include: The Suburbs, Suburban War, Month of May, Wasted Hours, We Used to Wait and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).

CD of the Week:

The Book of Secrets by Loreena McKennitt (1997) (Genre: New Age, Folk, Pop, International):

Canadian singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt’s music is aptly described as deep, ethereal folk music. If you’re in the mood for thoughtful, reflective music than this album is for you!

This is McKennitt’s sixth LP and it includes the songs: The Mummer’s Dance, Marco Polo, The Highwayman, La Serenissima and Night Ride Across the Caucasus.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

1) Cosmic Hallelujah by Kenney Chesney (Genre: Country):

This is singer-songwriter Chesney’s 17th album released in 2016. This is a modern country album with pop overtones that includes thoughtful songs.

Songs on the LP include: Trip Around the Sun, Setting the World on Fire, Noise, Some Town Somewhere, Bar at the End of the World and Winnebago.

2) Concrete and Gold by Foo Fighters (Genre: Rock):

This is the ninth album by the rock group the Foo Fighters. AllMusic describes this album as having roots in the progressive music of the 1970s.

Songs on the album include: Run, The Sky Is a Neighborhood, Happy Ever After (Zero Hour), Sunday Rain & Concrete and Gold.

3) Trumpet Evolution by Arturo Sandoval (Genre: Jazz):

To quote from Thom Jurek’ AllMusic review of this LP: “Trumpet Evolution, which is literally a journey through the great trumpeters from jazz’s and orchestral music’s past, is easily the finest moment of Sandoval’s long career and one of the greatest records jazz has produced in the preceding two decades.” Sounds like an excellent recommendation to me! And if you saw Mr. Sandoval in concert last week at the first program of the 2017-2018 Corning Civic Music season — then no doubt you’ll concur with that assessment as he played an outstanding concert!

Songs on this album include: When It’s Sleepy Time Down South, At the Jazz Band Ball, I Can’t Get Started, Concerto for Cootie, My Funny Valentine and Up Jumped Spring.

4) The Essential Jerry Lee Lewis [The Sun Sessions] by Jerry Lee Lewis (Genre: Classic Rock/1950s Rock):

This 40 song set was issued in 2013 and offers a great look at the early work of classic rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis shows of his piano playing chops and shows how he could masterfully blend the sounds of rock, country, blues, gospel and R&B and make any song sound like he wrote it and owned it!

Songs on this LP include: Crazy Arms, End Of The Road, Sixty Minute Man, Ubangi Stomp and Great Balls of Fire.

5) Special Rider Blues: Early Recordings, 1931 by Skip James (Genre: Blues/ Acoustic Blues):

This album by Delta Blues guitarist Skip James was recorded for Paramount Records in Grafton, Wisconsin in February 1931.

James had an otherworldly voice and played his guitar in an understated style. Many of his songs, including: I’m So Glad and Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues have been covered by many rock and blue musicians over the years.

This is the set that James’s reputation was built upon and it includes all the surviving songs he recorded for Paramount Records – including: Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues, Special Rider Blues, Devil Got My Woman, 22-20 Blues, For O’clock Blues and What Am I to Do Blues.

CD Recommendation of the Week:

Harp Attack! by James Cotton, Junior Wells, Cary Bell & Billy Branch (Genre: Blues):

A great album by four extraordinary Chicago blues harmonica players!

Songs include: Little Car Blues, Black Night, Keep Your Hands Out of My Pockets and Broke and Hungry.
