3. Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest with Johnny Cash, June Carter & Roscoe Holcomb:

Description: Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest TV shows were originally aired in 1965-1966; they were released in VHS form by Cap Wineberger in 1985 on his Central Sun label. Now, after another 20 years, the best of these have been revived by Shanachie Records in DVD form, and they are wonderful additions to the rather limited library of old-time, country and Bluegrass music captured on film. The Johnny Cash/June Carter footage: it is fascinating, to say the least. A very young Cash has lots to say along with his fine songs here, and June Carter just oozes the unique, ever-engaging Carter Family charm. The second hour of this disc is devoted to Roscoe Holcomb, who plays both banjo and guitar and sings in his powerful “high lonesome” style. He shares the show with Scottish folk singer Jean Redpath. Powerful stuff here, thankfully preserved! Review, which this typists agrees with whole heartedly, is taken from the countrysales.com site.

2. The Edward R. Murrow Collection


A towering figure in radio and television, Edward R. Murrow is a name still whispered in reverent tones. 2. Children of Giant: In the summer of 1955, it seemed as if all of Hollywood descended on the dusty West Texas town of Marfa as production began on the movie Giant, starring a legendary trio–Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean–along with young actors Earl Holliman and Elsa Cardenas. 3. Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds: An intimate portrait of two of Hollywood’s most fascinating personalities, Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds has become, poignantly, both a requiem and celebration of the two movie icons, who sadly and unexpectedly died one day apart in December 2016: Star Wars actress/author Carrie Fisher and her mother, Singin’ in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds. Shot mainly inside the Beverly Hills compound where both Fisher and Reynolds lived (their two houses were connected by one walkway), the film captures the unique chemistry and eccentricity that bound these two generations of Hollywood royalty. Given unusual access to each woman’s home and life, directors Alexis Bloom and Fisher Stevens captured the quicksilver wit and intelligence shared by both women as they orbited around each other, living separate lives but kept close by the gravitational pull of love and family.

Dewey DVD Recommendations Friday, 6 23 17

Welcome to a new weekly suggested viewing posting!

Each Friday I’m going to recommend three Non-Fiction DVDs for your weekend viewing pleasure!

And I’m going to play the librarian card just a little bit, and offer a sentence or two of info on how the DVDs, and for that matter the audio books on CD and Non-Fiction print books, are classified and shelved via the Dewey Decimal System.

This week we have three cool picks!

1. No Job For A Woman

 

This disc offers a documentary on female reporters and their fight against prejudice while trying to report the news during World War II.

The Dewey number for this DVD is 070.433 NO

And in Library Land the Dewey 000s, that is DVDs, books and audio books on CD with a call number ranging from 0 to 099.999, fall under the Dewey umbrella of General Knowledge.

Dewey General Knowledge topics include: Newspapers, Libraries, Museums, Computers, Tablets, E-Readers (and how to use the previously mentioned computers, tablets & e-readers) and generally speaking, general knowledge collections on a variety of subjects.

2. Understanding Modern Electronics:

This is one of the DVDs in the always intriguing Great Courses series. The Great Courses DVDs usually feature lectures by top notch educators and specialists. This three disc set features lectures by Professor Richard Wolfson of Middlebury College who lectures on the subject of how basic electronics work.

The Dewey number for this DVD is 537.5 UND

And the Dewey 500s = Math and Science. Under this umbrella category you’ll find materials on Dinosaurs, Fish, Chemistry, Insects, Plants, Animals, General Mathematics and more.

3. Rock And Roll Hall of Fame + Museum Live:

This DVD is actually the first disc in a 9 disc set that features music played by Rock Hall of Fame inductees during the first twenty five years of Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. This first disc features performance by Cream, The Doors, John Fogarty, Bruce Springsteen, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Band and more – and this is just disc 1!

The Dewey number for this DVD is 782.4216 ROC 1. And notably, the one at the end notes that this is a multi-disc set and that this is the first disc of the set.

And the Dewey 700 umbrella category is: Arts & Recreation – which is why the 700s are one of my favorite Dewey sections!

In these book/DVD & audio book sections you’ll find items on art, music, jokes, painting, drawing, knitting, playing the guitar, piano or bass, songbooks, sports, games and more!

The 700s rock – literally since this is the section that features items on Rock & Roll! It is a neat section – check it out!

And if you want to browse through the discs in our Rock Hall of Fame DVD series – they are currently hanging out in the New DVD section near the Circulation Desk when they are in the library.

Dewey Decimal Number for International Cook Books

ImageThe Dewey Decimal System number for cooking (generally speaking) is 641.5. And as you browse through the shelves in that section you’ll find more books that focus on various aspects of cooking. For example, the books labeled 641.55 cover “Money-saving and timesaving cooking” (OCLC, 2003) and the books labeled 641.52 to 641.54 deal with “Cooking with specific fuels, appliances, utensils;” (OCLC, 2003) all of which is very interesting if you like to cook! However, my favorite Dewey Decimal System number for cooking is 641.59 because the books that feature spine labels with that number fall under the category of international cooking. So if you’re looking for recipes and/or cook books that feature French, British, Polish, Italian, Brazilian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and South African cooking then 641.59 is your number!

And of course what this has to do with tech is very simply the fact that you can look up cook books (and all other library materials) and request them in the library catalog which is called StarCat. To request an item, either one that is checked out or one that is on a shelf at a library within the Southern Tier Library System, you simply click on the word “Hold” found on the item record and you’ll then be prompted to enter your library card number (the long number on the back of your library card without any spaces) and your PIN number (the last four digits of your telephone number) and that is it! The item will then be requested and you’ll either be sent an email notification when the library item has been pulled from the shelves and is available for you to pick up (if we have an email addresses on file for you) or you’ll receive a telephone call notifying you that the item you requested is ready to be picked up.

The Growing Popularity Of E-Singles & When Is A Library Book Not A Dewey Book?

Library Books That Are Not Dewey Books – They are Fiction!

The Growing Popularity Of E-Singles: E-Singles are a popular e-book format that is growing. Singles are shorter works than novels but longer works than articles. Singles are typically of a length that allows readers to sit down and read the work in one sitting. And the Singles format is growing in popularity because of the shortness of the works – it is easier to fit the time into the busy schedule to read a short book if you can read it in one sitting, because of their price – most singles are priced around $3.00 and because Singles are usually only issued in the digital e-book format so you can’t buy a printed copy of a Singles title. Additionally of note is the fact that although Singles can be put out by self-published independent authors they also being published by mainstream authors like Nelson DeMille, Lee Child and Diana Gabaldon and there is a growing trend for large media companies like the New York Times to publish the works of their journalists, particularly works in a series, as Shorts. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both sell Shorts. Amazon actually calls them “Shorts” (they used to call them Kindle Singles) and Barnes & Noble calls them “Nook Snaps” but by whatever name you chose to give them they are short, inexpensive works that can by quickly read when ever a reader as an hour or two to spare!

When Is A Library Book Not A Dewey Book? And a library book is not a Dewey book when it is not a non-fiction book! The Dewey Decimal Classification scheme is for non-fiction works only. Fiction titles can of course be found in all public libraries. And in our library fiction titles (in the adult reading level section) are broken down into eight subsections and they are:  Large Print (for general large print fiction), Large Print Mysteries, Large Print Westerns, Fiction (for general fiction titles), Mysteries (for all those stories where things go bump in the night!), Westerns (if  you like stories where cowboys and horses dot the terrain!), Short Story collections (these are all shelved by title and are just that – popular short stories housed in single volumes) and the combined Science Fiction and Fantasy section (these works include futuristic science based tales and tales of other dimensions and realities). And the accompanying photo shows you the spine labels of our non-Dewey fiction books – for each our seven fiction sections (adult reading level fiction sections that is – the children’s fiction sections we’ll leave for discussion another time!).

Dewey Decimal Favorites The 005s!

Among my favorite Dewey Decimal System numbers are the ones for those books in the 005.44 section – the ones that are categorized under the umbrella category of what OCLC*1 defines as “Operating systems for specific types of computers.” These are the books on how to use a specific operating system (i.e. Windows 7 or 8 or Mac OS). And going further down the shelves in the 005 section you come across the books on specific software applications (i.e. how to use Microsoft Word 2013, Microsoft Excel, Apple’s Pages software etc.).

Of course it is no big surprise that I like books about technology! And should I ever be interested in finding out more about an operating system (an “os” for short); I know I can go to that section and find easy to read books like “Teach Yourself Visually iPad,” “Teach Yourself Visually Office 2010” or even bigger kahuna books like David Pogue’s “Windows 7 The Missing Manual*2” or “Mac OS 10 Mountain Lion.” So I like the books in the 005 section!
