Monthly Science Fiction Film @ The Southeast Steuben County Library

Hi everyone, we’ll be showing our Monthly Science Fiction Film at the Library tomorrow evening – Friday, June 12, 2015.

Here’s a summary of the film:

This Island Earth (1955): Prepare to blast off from planet Earth in one of the most popular classic sci-fi films of all time! When atomic scientist Dr. Meacham (Rex Reason) is chosen to take part in a top-secret research experiment in a remote lab, he quickly discovers that he is really involved in an evil scheme by alien Metalunans to take over Earth. After he and the gorgeous Dr. Adams (Faith Domergue) make their escape shortly before the lab explodes, they are whisked away in a flying saucer to Metaluna, where they are blamed for the destruction. Will interstellar negotiation save the day or will the scientists be forced to take part in a treacherous battle to the death? Featuring incredible special effects that were 2 1/2 years in the making, this is one adventure that you have to see to believe! MPAA Rating: Un-rated (film was released prior to the establishment of the rating system), Run Time: 1 hour 26 minutes.

Seconds before Earth is destroyed to make way for a new hyperspace express route, mild-mannered Arthur Dent is whisked into space by his best friend (an alien posing as an out-of-work actor). Silent Running (1972): As this science fiction classic opens, botanist Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) has spent eight years aboard the space freighter “Valley Forge” preserving the only botanical specimens left from Earth under huge geodesic domes. When he receives orders to destroy the project and return home, Lowell rebels and hijacks the freighter, while plunging the craft into the gaseous Rings of Saturn. From that moment on, he has only the trees, the gardens and two “Drone” robots, Huey and Dewey, to keep him company on his greatest adventure of all. MPAA Rating: G. Run Time: 90 minutes.

Corning Area Writer’s Group: Inject some socialization into your solo writing time by join the library’s Adult Creative Writers Group for conversation, inspiration and feedback on writing projects. No sign up is required. This group meets every Thursday from 6-8 pm. On the third Thursday of the month the group meets in the library. HBO al la carte Coming In April To Apple TV Streaming Box

One of the big announcements Apple made at its press event last week was about a deal with HBO which will now allow you to purchase HBO al la carte, as in without subscribing to a cable package through your local cable TV provider!

Of course, there is a caveat, you have to have an Apple TV streaming box (and Internet access) to access the HBO Now library of programs.

The Apple TV box now sells for $69 and the HBO Now monthly subscription price will be $14.99 a month; however, this is a huge, huge deal as far as video fans being able to watch TV shows and movies wherever and whenever they want to because for the first time ever a major cable channel is offering a subscription to their video offerings that does not require you to purchase a cable TV package!

Hopefully now that HBO has put a crack in the walled in garden of TV Packaged the flowers of stand alone TV subscriptions will grow!

FYI Amazon Announcing New & Probably Low Cost Smartphone Today

Hi everyone, just FYI Amazon is holding a press conference as I’m writing this at 1:47 p.m. EST — and is widely expected to announce a brand new and low cost smartphone.

Accessing Your Library (Card) Account Online

If you’ve ever wondered how you can renew your books online, see that status of Holds (requests) you’ve made in real time or see what items you’ve checked out in the past so you don’t check out a book you’ve already read…

Then we have a video for you!

The video is the latest in our weekly 5 Minute Tech series! And it walks you through the steps of accessing your library account online. The video shows you how to login to your library account online, how to see what you have checked out, renew items you have checked out and how to turn on the feature to allow the system to remember your check out history – which is really helpful if can’t always quite remember if you’ve read a book before!

New Low Cost Smartphone Features Corning’s Gorilla Glass

Long time tech columnist & reviewer Walt Mossberg reviews and relatively inexpensive new smartphone on the Re/Code site this week and in his video/print review he mentions that this new phone, the Motorola “Moto E,” which is an entry level Android smartphone that costs $129 and can be used via AT&T & T-Mobile, and he mentions in his review that:

The phone is a solid step up from feature non-smart phones and is recommended to people that haven’t had a smartphone before but who don’t want to pay mega bucks for one either up front or as part of a 2-year contract;
And that the phone is using Corning’s Gorilla display glass!

Some Links To Cool Tech Stories You Might Have Missed

It is super busy in the Southern Tier region of Library Land and so I haven’t had time to type up a proper length posting to highlight just why I believe the following 5 articles are of note for the casual tech fan. However, briefly, article 1 is on the reported talks between Apple, that makes the Apple TV media streamer and Comcast and if those talks are successful than cable subscribers might be able to ditch their cable box for an Apple TV box and have some extra streaming options thrown into the mix as part of the Apple TV menu (like having access to Netflix right next to the channel apps for ABC, NBS, PBS & CBS! Article 2, despite the title, is a list of just announced gadgets that were awarded Engadget Editors’ Choice Awards – this gadgets include their best picks for some items you might expect like the best smartphone and e-reader and some items you might not expect like the high tech Nest smoke detector; article 3 offers a report of Amazon’s upcoming, and not-yet-released, new smart phone that is reported to have many high end bells and whistles, article 4 offers a thoughtful CNET article on just which iPad is the right one for you (And I love iPads so I think everyone should have one!) and article 5 relays the fact that iTunes radio just got a NPR news station – and without further ado – here are the article titles and links for your tech reading pleasure!
