iOS 6 Released!

Hi everyone, I know I said in yesterdays’ blog posting that I would discuss how you can get free library e-music and e-videos through the STLS Digital Catalog; however, I have been super swamped today and have not gotten a chance to do a thorough job on the subject because I’ve been so busy.

Sorry about that! However, there is some new tech news I can relay in brief and that is the news that Apple has released the iOS 6 software update.

The New York Times tech journalist David Pogue has written a nice overview of the basic changes and new features includes in this Apple software upgrade.

His article is titled New iOS 6 Loses Google Maps, but Adds Other Features and here’s the link:

Have a great evening everyone!

High Tech Wrist Watches & Skype Updates iPad & iPhone Apps

High Tech Wrist Watches: I know there are many people out there that don’t wear a wrist watch anymore because they are used to having the time display on their cell phones, tablets or computers. However, wrist watch technology is advancing and today you can buy a wrist watch with a very narrow wrist band and a digital display. And you can even buy a smart watch, like Sony’s SmartWatch series of wrist watches, which will communicate with your phone and the Internet. So if you haven’t purchased a new watch in a while you may want to check out a New York Times Bits Blog article titled Disruptions: The Next Wave for the Wristwatch which offers an even more in-depth discussion of the new high tech wrist watches. You might even check it out with an eye towards gift giving for the holiday season as the summer seems to be flying right by!

Here’s the link to the article:

Skype Updates iPad & iPhone Apps: USA Today reports that Skype has updated its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch apps to include a new photo sharing feature, increasing the speed at which the app works and include a fix that should cut down on the amount of battery power Skype users need to make video calls from their iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. The updates will no doubt improve performance of the Skype app for the new iPhone which is scheduled to be unveiled September 12.

YouTube App Disappearing From iPad And iPhone

Hi everyone, just a quick afternoon update for all the iPad and iPhone users out there!

When we all upgrade to Apple’s iOS 6 in the fall – the YouTube app, which has come pre-installed on all three generations of the iPad to date, will disappear from our iPads and iPhones. Apple and Google, the owner of YouTube, are experiencing some friction with each other as both try and dominate portions of the tech market Google with its Nexus 7 Tablet and Apple with its iPad and iPhone.

Apple has stated of this change that YouTube will still be accessible through the Safari web browser and that Google is working on a YouTube app to place in Apple’s App Store.

Here’s a link to an Apple Insider article titled Apple removes YouTube app from iOS with beta 4 release of iOS 6:

Speculating On The Name Of The New Smaller iPad

Reputable tech sources have said that Apple will be unveiling a smaller iPad, perhaps a 7” iPad at the same September 12 press conference they are hosting to unveil the next generation iPhone; and there is a great deal of speculation from tech reviewers as to what this new iPad will be called – not to mention of course, what features it will have and how much it will cost! Here’s a link to a CNET article by tech reviewer David Carnoy on just this subject!

Google Pulls The Nexus Q Media Player, Amazon Instant Video iPad App Now Available & Is Craigslist Stuck In The 1990s?

Google Pulls The Nexus Q Media Player: Google has pulled the Nexus Q media streaming player from the market before it has even gone on sale! Google has done this due to the great many negative reviews the device has received from Tech reviewers. The Nexus Q is another media streaming device, like the Apple TV and Roku players that allows users to stream content from the Internet to their television sets. Apparently, Google decided, based upon the overwhelming negative reviews of the device; that is isn’t ready from prime time yet. And for those lucky persons who pre-ordered the device – they will actually receive a free version of the media streaming player.

Here’s a link to a New York Times Bits blog article on the subject tilted Google Delays The Nexus Q After Poor Reviews:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/31/google-delays-the-nexus-q-after-poor-reviews/

Amazon Instant Video iPad App Now Available: Amazon has just released an iPad app for their video store. So now you can rent or purchase videos from Amazon and watch them on your iPad. You can also access any TV shows or movies you have previously purchased from Amazon. And on a related note, you can also watch any movies or TV shows you purchase from Amazon on your TV via a media streaming player like the Roku Player.

The tech site Mashable offers an article on this subject today it is the aptly titled Amazon Instant Video iPad App, here’s the link:

http://mashable.com/2012/08/01/amazon-instant-video-ipad-app/

Is Craigslist Stuck In The 1990s?: The New York Times Bits blog also offers an article today detailing how the very popular Craigslist site, that allows users to sell their goods online, has not kept up with the times and has also tried to stamp out innovative ways users have come up with to more easily search the site. The article is titled Disruptions: Innovations Snuffed Out by Craigslist – here’s the link:

The Future Is Here: Paying Without Cash, Credit Or Debit Cards & Registering To Vote Via Facebook

The Future Is Here: Paying Without Cash, Credit Or Debit Cards: David Pogue, The New York Times tech guru, offers an article today titled Pay By Voice, So Long Wallet; and it relays the future of paying for items in stores sans any type of credit or debit cards – and cash? That is not allowed either!

Right now the big thing in payment technology is actually an app and small credit/debit card scanning device you can fit on an iPhone or iPad and that lets merchants swipe a customer’s credit or debit card to quickly and easily pay for the items being purchased. And you may be thinking “Yes, but isn’t that the same thing we already do when we use cash registers?” And the answer to that is not quite because if you have an iPad or iPhone with a cellular connection all you need to do is use an app and the small scanning attachment* and that makes it easy for anyone to take payments via credit or debit cards from almost anywhere. So this new technology impacts not just merchants in stores but anyone selling items anywhere because they can quickly and easily accept credit or debit card payments – thus vendors at fairs, parades and concerts can quickly and easily accept payment for items as can the clerk at your favorite coffee shop and the local high school kids making money by babysitting or mowing lawns.

And as impressive as the iPhone and iPad credit/debit card swiping system is – just wait because on the horizon is something even more impressive! Imagine buying those same items – coffee at your local coffee shop, a t-shirt at a concert or hotdog at the ballgame and not even having to present a debit or credit card at all but instead simply being able to pay by saying your name! Not only is that technology coming, but in fact it is already here! The company Square, which was one of the first to offer the previously mentioned pay with a credit or debit card via the swiping/iPad/iPhone system, now has developed a way to use an iPad or iPhone to allow people who also have iPads or iPhones to pay for items without them even having to take out a credit or debit card or even take their iPads or iPhones out of their pockets or backpacks! This new system is called Pay With Square and if a coffee shop or vendor or any sort had the proper equipment (an iPad and the appropriate Pay With Square app) and the customer is signed up for the service – than the customer can indeed pay by simply walking up to the clerk at the coffee shop or t-shirt vendor at the concert and simply saying his or her name!

Cool stuff! And here’s the link to the Pogue article which relays all the details:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/19/technology/personaltech/as-pay-by-phone-advances-square-takes-another-leap-state-of-the-art.html?_r=1&ref=technology

Registering To Vote Via Facebook: ABC News & CNN both offer articles today regarding the fact that the State of Washington has just become the first state to allow its residents who are U.S. citizens, to register to vote via Facebook! Washington is actually the twelfth state to allow residents to vote online but it is the first to allow residents, who are registered Facebook users – to register to vote via Facebook. The State of Washington, in conjunction with Microsoft and Facebook, has set up this new way for people to register to vote to try and entice younger people to register to vote – this is an issue because less than 10% of state residents between the ages of 18 and 29 voted in the last general election and state officials hope that offering those young people the option to register to vote via their Facebook accounts will increase the number of registered voters in that age group.

Here’s the link to the ABC News article which is titled Register to Vote? There’s an App for That:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/07/voter-registration-theres-an-app-for-that/

And one to the CNN article, titled Washington state to become first to offer voter registration on Facebook:

Great iPad Accessories & Did You Know You Can Buy Bluetooth Headphones That Allow You To Make & Receive Phone Calls? And The Library Now Has Circulating E-Readers!

Great iPad Accessories: CNET, the knowledgeable and popular tech review site, has a great article and slideshow showcasing some accessories you can buy that make your iPad an even greater device that it is to begin with – and that is saying something!

These accessories include the Apple TV ($99) (not really a TV instead it is a hockey puck sized media streaming player), a Bluetooth (wireless) keyboard case, a Camera Connection Kit ($29)so you can plug your digital camera directly into your iPad, an HDIM Connector ($39.99), a  Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover ($99) which connects to your iPad and allows you to use it like a lap top — by typing on an attached keyboard and more!

The article is titled Must Have iPad Accessories and here’s the link:

http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-31747_7-10011949-1.html

Did You Know You Can Buy Bluetooth Headphones That Allow You To Make & Receive Phone Calls? I didn’t! I have a Wireless pair of headphones that I’ve used for years that allow me to listen to wireless listen to music while walking around the house or taking the trash out to the curb. However, I didn’t realize that headphone technology has advanced to the point where you can actually buy a pair of wireless (Bluetooth) headphones that have the built-in capability to allow you to make and receive phone calls and wirelessly stream music! And you can stream music to these headphones not just from your home theater system but also from your smart phone or tablet! Cool stuff! And it is certainly time for me to upgrade my headphones! I found a link to the article which is actually titled Best Headphones Under $100 within the CNET article on great iPad accessories. And notably, not all of the headphones featured in the article are the wireless kind – but two of them are the Creative WP-350 Bluetooth and the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32. And in relation, Amazon sells both those wireless headphones for less than $70.

And here’s the link to that article:

You can check out available e-readers at the Circulation Desk and can request one of our circulating e-readers (Nooks) through StarCat.

And here are a few of the general rules regarding patron usage of the circulating e-readers which are taken from the Library’s official circulating e-reader policy:

Circulating E-Reader Basics:

  • Circulating e-readers may be checked out by patrons of the Southeast Steuben County Library.
  • E-Readers circulate for two weeks and may be renewed for an additional two weeks if there isn’t a hold (request) for the e-reader
  • E-Readers must be returned to a library staff member at the Circulation Desk during the library’s business hours. They cannot be returned in the book drop or to another library in the system.
  • Patrons must fill out an E-Reader Policy Agreement form, at the Circulation Desk, before checking out an e-reader.

Google’s Nexus 7, iPad Mini & How to Upgrade Your PC to Windows 8 Metro

Google’s Nexus 7: Last week Google unveiled a new 7” tablet called the Nexus 7. And this week the critical reviews are in and are mostly positive. The Nexus 7, like Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a 7”, 8 GB tablet*.* Granted, the Kindle Fire allows casual tablet users to read/write e-mail, surf the web and use a few Amazon Kindle apps; but otherwise emphasizes users buying content from Amazon in the form of TV shows, movies, music and e-books to watch, read and listen to respectively on the Kindle Fire.

However, in contrast, The Nexus 7 truly is a tablet – translation – using it will allow you to do much more than what you can do with a Kindle Fire. For $199 you get a 7” Wi-Fi tablet with a very clear screen, Bluetooth capability (“Bluetooth” meaning you can wirelessly connect a keyboard, mouse or other compatible Wi-Fi connecting input device to the tablet), external speakers, a front facing camera for video chats, a battery with nine hour life and a GPS function.  This new tablet has received critical tech acclaim from many corners and pasted below are links to two of those shining critical reviews; the first, titled A Tablet To Rival The Leader, from the noted New York Times tech guru David Pogue, and the second titled “Nexus 7 review: the best $200 tablet you can buy” from Endgadget tech reviewer Tim Stevens:

Click here for the Pogue review:

And here for the Tim Stevens review:

And here, for a third review that I just found on CNN, titled Nexus 7 best Android Tablet Yet:

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/05/tech/mobile/nexus-7-best-android-tablet/index.html

iPad Mini Tablet: There have been unconfirmed tech rumors for months that Apple has been working on a smaller iPad than the 9.7” version that is available now. Apple spokesmen have so far refrained from commenting when asked about these rumors; however, today the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Asian component suppliers have said they are preparing to manufacturer glass screens for Apple that are smaller tablet screens.

How to Upgrade to Windows 8 Metro: Windows 8 is slated to be released this fall. And Information Week has produced a nice article, titled Windows 8 Upgrade FAQ: How To Go Metro: Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to get PC users onto its new OS; here’s what you need to know,  that offers you information on how you can upgrade to Windows 8. Essentially, you can upgrade your Windows PC to Windows 8 if your PC meets the upgrade standards (some of which like memory, sound/video card installed etc. vary by computer) and if your computer is currently running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7. And if your current desktop or laptop bites the dust before this fall and you need a new one, you’ll be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 8 for only $14.99.

Here’s a link the Information Week article:

*You can upgrade to a 16 GB Nexus 7 for an extra $50 — $249 – in contrast Amazon has only one Kindle Fire Model.

Chrome Browser Now Available for iPad & iPhone & Library E-Books: Part IV

Chrome Browser Now Available for iPad & iPhone: Google Chrome iPad & iPhone users rejoice! There is finally an app for that! You can now download the free Google Chrome Browser for your iPhone or iPad from the app store. So if you like Chrome and have been eagerly awaiting its introduction as an Apple’s app – now is the time to download it!

Library E-Books: Part IV: Today’s library e-book posting is going to focus on how you download free library e-books to Barnes & Noble’s Nooks.

And I’m going to jump right into this subject by repeating what I said earlier last week about DRM and also noting two things you need to have access to before you begin the get-free-library-e-books-on-a-Nook process.

1) DRM: DRM, also known as Digital Rights Management software, is the reason that the download process for library e-books contains so many steps; and in fact, more steps if you have a Nook than if you have a Kindle or tablet. DRM is a restrictive software built into e-books at the insistence of publishers as an anti-piracy tool. And basically DRM locks library e-books and you have to go through a process to unlock the library e-books before you can read them. And in the case of the STLS Digital Catalog the software you need to unlock the e-books is called Adobe Digital Editions.

2) Two Things You Have Need To Have Access To Before You Begin The Get Free Library E-Books On A Nook Process: You have to have your own computer and you have to have an Internet connection. If you’ve read all the postings last week about public library e-books you may wonder why you need your own PC to check library e-books out to a Nook – because you don’t need that if you own a Kindle. And the reason for that is because Amazon actually unlocks the DRM software on library e-books sent to Kindles – that occurs when you log into the Amazon website. With Nooks you have to unlock the e-books yourself and that is why you need to have your own Internet connected computer and also why you have to download the Adobe Digital Editions software.

So before you can begin the regular process of downloading free library e-books to a Nook – and that is the process you will use in the future – you have to go through a preparation process.

And the preparation process is to go to your Internet connected computer and:

1) Go to the library’s website found at: SSCLIBRARY.ORG

2) Click on the STLS Digital Catalog link  –  found at the right hand side of the page – about half way down the page (The Digital Catalog home page will display)

3) Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page until you see a box labeled “Digital Book Software.” And underneath that you should see a link that says “Adobe® Digital Editions For Adobe eBooks”

4) Click on the Adobe® Digital Editions For Adobe eBooks link and the Help – Software – Adobe eBooks page will display

5) Click on the Download Adobe Digital Editions link or icon and the download process will start – you’ll be re-directed to the Adobe Digital Editions site.

6) Follow the prompts until the download process and the create-Adobe-account process is complete.

7) The Adobe Digital Editions icon will then display on your desktop

Note: During the download process you will be required to create a free Adobe Digital Editions account and the Adobe Digital Editions software will download to your computer. If you find this a complex process please do feel free to call the library and make an appointment to sit down with a staff member who will assist you in setting up your Adobe Digital Editions account and in checking our your first library e-books and getting them onto your Nook

And once you’ve downloaded the Adobe Digital Editions software and registered a free Adobe Digital Editions account then the future process to check out library e-books to your Nook is:

1) Plug your Nook into your computer and it should appear as a plugged in e-reading device within the Adobe Digital Editions Window.

2) Open the Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer (the icon looks like a book and if you just downloaded the software it should already be open)

3) Open a web browser and go to the library’s website: SSCLIBRARY.ORG

4) Click on the STLS Digital Catalog link (this is the same link we used to get to the Digital Catalog home page before…) and the Digital Catalog will display

5) Look for a e-book you’d like to read (EPUB or PDF format – and EPUB is preferable)

6) Click the Add to Cart link and the My Cart page will display.

7) Click the Proceed to checkout link and the Sign in page will display

8) Sign in by selecting the Southern Tier Library System from the drop down box, entering your library card number in Library card number box, entering your PIN number in the PIN box (your PIN numbers is initially the last four digits of your telephone number) and clicking on the gray Sign in button; the Check Out page will display

9) Click on the Confirm check out button and the Download page will display

10) Click on the gray Download button (and depending upon which version of Windows you are using you may have to open downloaded e-book file via the status bar (likely with Windows 7) or the e-book may just open in the Adobe Digital Editions window; the Adobe Digital Editions window should open and the Reading view will display

11) Click on the Library View link – the icon appears as three books standing straight up and is found in the top left hand corner of the Adobe Digital Editions window (right under the name of the window – “Adobe Digital Editions;” the Library View will display

12) Move your cursor until it is right over the top of the e-book and then press down and hold your left mouse button down and move it leftward across the window until it is right over the top of your Nook (your Nook should be in the column at the left hand side of the page – the e-book will be transferred to your Nook with DRM software unlocked

13) Unplug your Nook

14) With most Nook models you will find the e-book in your documents folder – and you can then begin reading it!

As this is a long process –and the library has actually created a video to assist Nook users in obtaining library  e-books! And the video does show you step-by-step how to go through the preparation process by downloading the Adobe Digital Editions software and then it goes through the entire check out process – so please do check it out! The only little thing to note is that we have changed the title of the link to the Digital Catalog on our home page – it now says “STLS Digital Catalog” and in the video it is seen under the old title of “E-Books and Audio Books” – we updated the link when we added video and music formats to the catalog – so if  you just remember that one little thing that has been changed – the video will easily guide you through the process of checking out e-books to your Nook!

Here’s the link to the library’s Youtube page where you can access the video – it is in the section titled “How to videos from SSC Library” and is simply titled “How To Check Library E-Books Out To A Nook:”

Library E-Books Part III: How to Download Free Library E-Books to Smartphones & Tablets

As you may be aware the Southeast Steuben County Library in Corning, NY is a member of the Southern Tier Library system. And Southern Tier Library System member libraries buy e-books for the Digital Catalog through the library e-book vendor OverDrive.

And OverDrive has created an app for all Apple, Android and Windows smartphones and tablets. You can find the app, which is officially called “OverDrive Media Console” in your respective app store.

Once you obtain the app and set it up, which requires you to register for a free Adobe Digital Editions account; you will check out library e-books by:

  1. Opening the app on your smartphone or tablet*
  1. Selecting the Southeast Steuben County Library as your library to obtain e-books from – this will then re-direct you to the STLS Digital Catalog where you can search for e-books or audio books to download*2
  1. Search for an available e-book you’d like to read (if the e-book is available there will be a button to the right of the title that says “Add to cart. If the e-book is checked out; instead, you’ll see a button that says “Place a hold” and you can click that button to be emailed when the title is available for you to download)
  1. Click the Add to Cart link (and the My Cart page will display)
  1. Click the Proceed to Check Out link on the My Cart page (and the Sign in page will display)
  1. Select the Southern Tier Library System (instead of Penn Yan Public Library) from the drop down box in the Library field*2 (just click on the down arrow to the right of the word Library.)
  1. Enter your Library card number in the library card number field.
  1. Enter your PIN number in the PIN field (this is by default the last four digits of your telephone number)
  1. Click the Log In button on that same Sign in page (The Check Out page will display)
  1. Click on the Confirm Check Out button (on the Check Out page and the download page will display)
  1. Click the download button and the e-book should start to download into the OverDrive library within your app. E-books download in a matter of seconds – and you’ll see a download status bar fill with color as the download process unfolds and completes
  1. Read your library e-book!

Tomorrow I’ll discuss how you download library e-books to Nooks and one of next weeks’ postings will be on how you download audio books and media (music and videos) from the Digital Catalog.

Have a great day!

Linda R.

*1) If your tablet is a Wi-Fi only model you will have to be within range of a Wi-Fi network in order to download library e-books.

*2) You can download MP3 audio books to all Windows, Android and Apple smartphones and tablets; however, WMA (Windows Media Player) audio books can only be directly downloaded to Windows smartphones and tablets. If you have another wireless device you should be able to download the PC version of OverDrive Media Console to your computer, download WMA audio books to it and then transfer those to Apple or Android mobile devices. Unfortunately if your main computer is a Mac – you cannot download WMA audio books to it and transfer them to mobile devices; the process will only work if you’re using a Windows PC.
