About The Movie: The movie set in England during the Christmas season of 1183, tells the story of a scheming family consisting of of King Henry II of England (Peter O’Toole), his wife Queen Eleanor (Katherine Hepburn in an Oscar winning role) and their three rebellious sons Prince Richard (Anthony Hopkins), Prince Geoffrey (Nigel Terry) and Prince John (John Castle).
The big question under discussion in the family is which son will succeed the aging Henry as king. King Henry favors Prince John, Queen Eleanor favors Prince Richard and neither parent favors Prince Geoffrey, much to his displeasure. Joining the family for the drama as they argue and plot; are the young French Princess Alais (Jane Merrow), who is King Henry’s mistress and betrothed to Prince Richard; and Alais’s half brother King Phillip of France (Timothy Dalton).

The Antiquarian’s Object of Desire by India Holton
Professors Amelia Tarrant and Caleb Sterling are best friends working in the field of magical antiquities and mired in the gender politics of Oxford University–which means no one can ever know they are best friends and that no one takes the brilliant Amelia seriously. The two bicker, create chaos, and pretend to hate each other in public, while secretly leaning on each other to navigate the world. When a staged argument gets out of hand, their faculty head banishes them to the country and tasks them with investigating a collection of possibly magical objects at a country manor house. In the company of an ever-growing collection of irritating–and perhaps villainous–people, Amelia and Caleb navigate mayhem, undertake intellectual inquiry, and finally admit that the sparks they generate when they pretend to hate each other are actually the embers of a delightful romantic life. VERDICT The follow-up to The Geographer’s Map to Romance is the best of the “Love’s Academic” trilogy, rich with magical and academic details, a zany plot that moves the story forward, and a tender, engaging romance. It sees all the series’ couples united and offers a lovely note of acceptance and appreciation.-Library Journal Review

The Mother-Daughter Book Club: A Novel by Susan Patterson & James Patterson
Elin, Mariella, and Grace met in college, and Jamie later joined their tight-knit friend group that now includes the four women’s five now-adult daughters. Three years after their last Mother-Daughter Book Club, which ended in disaster, the crew is meeting at Mariella’s house on Lake Como for a weekend planned to the hilt that will include wine, yoga, boat rides, and a little bit of talking about books. As pastor Grace (still a virgin at 60) finds romance, Elin’s daugther, neurologist Brigid, is conspiring with Jamie to hide a secret. This is written by James Patterson with his wife, Susan, with whom he collaborated on Things I Wish I Told My Mother (2023), so despite its relationship-fiction trappings, there’s lots of plot that keeps the pages turning, especially the big reveal at the end. Chapters alternate among the nine women–helpfully labeled with the name of the narrator–giving a full picture of a weekend away, bolstered by delicious descriptions of meals and scenery. Fans of Elin Hilderbrand’s The Five-Star Weekend (2023) will enjoy this girls’ trip to Italy.

Queen and Her Presidents: The Hidden Hand That Shaped History by Susan Page

When It’s Your Turn For Midnight by Blessing Musariri
When fifteen-year-old Chianti learns that her dad isn’t her biological father, her family splinters. Where the Music Had to Go: How Bob Dylan and the Beatles Changed Each Other—and the World by Jim Windolf

The Bridge Back To You by Riss M. Neilson
Neilson (A Love Like the Sun) crafts a heartfelt second-chance romance, bringing together Carmello Rodriguez and Olivia Jones through an unexpected inheritance. When Carmello’s late mother Celia leaves him 75 percent of her Filipino restaurant–with 25 percent going to his ex-girlfriend Olivia–the two professional chefs spend hours in Celia’s kitchen cooking together, rekindling favorite memories, and addressing their past relationship through their dual perspectives. Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power by Abby Phillip
CNN anchor Phillip debuts with a fresh and illuminating account of Jesse Jackson’s 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns. Starting from Jackson’s childhood in segregated Greenville, S.C., Phillip traces his development into a prominent civil rights leader. Jackson became Martin Luther King Jr.’s “man in the North,” helming boycott campaigns that pressured companies into hiring more Black workers. He also took a growing interest in harnessing Black electoral power, spearheading efforts to register Black voters and aiding in the 1983 election of Chicago’s first Black mayor, Harold Washington, a victory that inspired Jackson to pursue his own presidential run. Phillip surveys the two Jackson campaigns’ notable achievements, including embarrassing President Reagan by negotiating directly with Syrian president Hafez al-Assad for the return of an imprisoned Black Navy lieutenant, and building his multiethnic “rainbow coalition” in part by advocating for white farmers. Phillip also delves into the campaigns’ catastrophic missteps, most destructively Jackson’s antisemitic reference to New York City as “Hymietown,” which derailed his 1984 bid. She also offers a striking analysis of Jackson’s continued influence, showing how his campaign prefigured the contemporary progressive platform and to some extent foreshadowed the populist agendas of both Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. The Lust Crusade by Jo Segura
The third in Segura’s Raiders of the Lost Heart series features a sassy librarian and a hot, nerdy archaeologist. After a lifetime of playing it safe, Dani books a trip to Greece to mourn Theo in his favorite place. Both of them have a hard time confessing their feelings, and there are several miscommunications, but Dani and Theo have amazing chemistry. Moonlight Runner by Karen Robards
The brilliant Robards (Some Murders in Berlin, 2024) presents a captivating wartime adventure set it Ireland in 1918. The Irish are rebelling against the British for their independence and many of the locals are getting involved in dangerous acts. Rynn Carmichael is a 22-year-old local who is working as a nurse at Ballyshannon Court, a large family estate turned hospital during the war. Rynn discovers that her fiance , as well as her close childhood friends, are in a dire situation in which she involves herself. Several times over, in fact, starting with gun smuggling, murder, healing, and hiding the men who are fighting for Ireland. Trying to keep herself safe but also willing to support Ireland in whatever way she can, Rynn keeps getting embroiled in dangerous situations. This is an epic tale of feminine heroism, patriotism, and a touch of romance. With rich historical details of Ireland and London, descriptions of everything from fashion to classism, violence, and war, The Moonlight Runner captures readers right from the start. As is now the post-holiday season, the library is open our usual hours today and tomorrow, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. today (Friday) and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
This week’s Suggested Listening & Viewing blog post has been cancelled due to a challenge pitched the library’s way by YouTube itself. It seems that YouTube thinks the new library IP address might be malicious, and so it is blocking anyone using YouTube at the library to access videos without signing in.
So instead of sharing the music and trailer clips I was going to share, I will share information about how you can access digital library content, some of which, for example anything in the Hoopla or Kanopy catalogs, offers on-demand access.
And I should note, you can probably access YouTube as a guest, without logging in at your location if you’ve done it before – or have used your internet service for a long time. As you may know, you can search for songs, music playlists (i.e. New Years Jazz, New Year’s Easy Listening etc.) or ambience videos (i.s. Winter Fireplace, Coffee Shop Jazz, relaxing ambience, snow falling background music etc). Just go to https://www.youtube.com/ and type whatever your subject in the search box.
Having said that, let’s jump in!
The library has four catalogs you can access online; and you can look at all four without a library card; however, to actually do anything in any catalog, except look that is, you have to have a library card.
1. StarCat: The catalog of physical library materials for the entire Southern Tier Library System; where you can go to see what items you have checked out and place holds for items. StarCat can be accessed through the library’s website found at https://ssclibrary.org/ or you can go directly to the catalog by clicking/tapping on the following link: https://starcat.stls.orgStarCat does not feature a companion app.
2. Hoopla: This catalog, the only one of the four listed that is only accessible to SSC Library patrons (meaning you need a library card from our library that starts with the numbers 10014)* features the following digital content: audiobooks, eBooks, comics, TV shows, movies and albums. All content is available on-demand – so you don’t have to wait for it. Hoopla features a companion app, which you can access from the store on your mobile device or smart tv. You can also access Hoopla through a web browser on a computer by going to the following webpage: https://www.hoopladigital.com/
3. Kanopy: This catalog features streaming videos for the whole family. Kanopy is an on-demand catalog. You can download the Kanopy app through the app store on your mobile device or smart V, or access it online via the following link: https://www.kanopy.com/en/catalog
4. Libby (formerly OverDrive): Libby features eBooks, digital audiobooks and digital magazines. The eBooks and audiobooks are available in the one copy/one user lending model; which means they may be checked out just like print books one-cop-per-one-patron at a time. The magazines are available in the simultaneous access/on demand lending model. You can access Libby by downloading the app from your app store, or by going to the Digital Catalog online, and it is available in two web browser formats the newer one is: https://libbyapp.com and the older one, which long time library patrons will recognize is https://stls.overdrive.com/

Hi everyone, welcome to our Suggested Listening posting for this week!

This week our musical spotlight is on a single musician, Muddy Waters, who was born Mckinley Morganfield on April 4, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi; there is some discrepancy over whether he was born in 1913 or 1915, although recent research suggested the 1913 date, is in fact the correct one; in any case, today is the anniversary of his birth.
He began playing guitar as a youth, was nicknamed “Muddy” by his grandmother as a child, moved to Chicago in 1943, became one of the pillars of the post-war electric blues scene, influencing countless other musicians and guitarists and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with its first class, in 1987.
To put it succinctly, his influence on blues, soul and rock & roll is incalculable!

Catalog 1: StarCat
StarCat is the catalog of physical materials including print books, DVDs, audiobooks on CD etc. StarCat is available to all patrons of all public libraries in the Southern Tier Library System*
The Digital Catalog (and its companion app Libby) offers all Southern Tier Library System member library patrons access to eBooks, eAudiobooks & eMagazines via a lending model known in Library-ese as “one copy/one user;” that library speak means that eBooks & eAudiobooks found in The Digital Catalog/Libby are like print books found on library shelves, only one patron can check out a copy of a title at a time.
Exception: Magazines found in the digital catalog are available via a different lending model known as simultaneous access. And that fancy library speak means that magazines are available for all patrons to check out at the same time, i.e. if you and all your family and friends wish to read the latest digital edition of Newsweek, all of you can check out the e version of the magazine and read it at the same time.
The Digital Catalog/Libby checkout limit is 5 titles a time.
The Hoopla Digital Catalog (and its companion app, also called Hoopla) offers Southeast Steuben County Library patrons access to a second digital catalog with an on-demand lending model. In library speak, this lending model, like The Digital Catalog/Libby’s magazine lending model, is known as “simultaneous access.” The difference is, the Hoopla catalog offers access to more formats: eBooks, eAudiobooks, eComics, digital albums, TV shows & movies – and all items, in all those formats, are available for patrons to checkout immediately.
