Cell Phone Basics @ Corning Senior Center

Do you have a cell phone and have questions about how to us it? Drop in and we’ll walk you through the basic cell phone usage steps. Bring your questions! We’ll answer your questions too!

This program is co-hosted with the Corning Senior Center.

What to Read Next!

Drop in at the library any time between 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. to find out what’s new at the library this month.  Acquisition Librarian, Linda Reimer will provide you with lists of all the new books in print, e-books, downloadable audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, digital magazines, and streaming videos added to the library’s collection in the last month, broken down by General Fiction & Literature, Mysteries, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy and Non-Fiction, and including a description for each item. Browse the lists while you’re at the library or take them home with you to peruse at your leisure. Bring your smartphone or tablet along if you would like, and Linda will be happy to show you how to check out digital library materials. You’ll be able to request titles on the spot, and even enjoy a free cup of coffee.

One-On-One Personal Technology Appointments:

You can make an appointment with a member of our staff as an individual or for 2-4 people to learn how to use a new computer,  e-reader, tablet, smartphone, email, The Internet and more at a variety of times throughout each month. About Creation Station:

Creation Station: The SSCL Makerspace is a place to go to create things! Creation Station features a 3 D Printer, creation software, a Cricut Electronic Cutting Machine, scanners that allow you to digitize photos, slides and documents, a binding machine, a laminating machine, a drawing kit, sewing machines, a sewing serger, a wide format printer and more – check it out! Patrons must be trained to use select equipment ask staff for details.

All library programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library, SSC.

Digital Literacy Programs & Creation Station Hours Week of March 28, 2016

Creation Station (Makerspace) Hours
Monday, March 28 & Wednesday, March 30: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Tuesday, March 29 & Thursday, March 31: 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM

Creation Station is our makerspace in the library. Come in and make something incredible. Makerspace projects that will be available to be created at the Southeast Steuben County Library include:

• 3 D Printer created projects*
• Computer created projects
• Sewing projects*
• Scanning projects (slides, photos & documents)
• Art projects*
• Scrapbooking projects*
• Drawing

All Patrons interested in using the Creation Station will be required to receive training before using the space. Projects that require training are only accessible upon staff availability.

*Some projects will require a small fee for materials.

Note: Creation Station hours will be changing as of April 1! The new hours will be posted to our blogs later this week.

Digital Photo Slideshow: Back in the 20th century families used to gather to watch images of birthdays and family vacations projected onto living room walls. Nowadays almost all of us use digital cameras, but family slideshows don’t have to be a thing of the past. Using Microsoft PowerPoint we can create exciting slideshows with added music, and even video, and they can be viewed on our TVs and shared in a variety of ways, including online. Please bring a flash drive or CD with your photographs. We encourage you to bring your own laptop if you have Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 or newer, otherwise we are happy to provide laptops for everyone. The Online Library: In the 21st Century a public library offers more than onsite access to books, DVDs and the Internet. Today public libraries offer patrons access to digital books, audiobooks, videos, magazines, interactive learning materials and special research resources 24/7 via computers, tablets and smartphones. This program will offer an overview of the digital library materials SSCL patrons can checkout and access from wherever they are at any time of the day or night. Monday, August 3, 2015:

Endless Mountain Music Festival: College students from around the country gather at Mansfield University on a yearly basis to play classical music together; and they will be playing a concert for us!

This is a free concert suitable for all age groups.

Tuesday, August 4, 2015:

Creation Station, The Southeast Steuben County Library’s Makerspace, will be open from 1-4 p.m.

Into the Heart of Rural America: A One Woman Show with Sharon Rula Backos: Everyone has a story and Sharon Backos has set out to record the stories of ordinary upstate New Yorkers and turned them into something extraordinary. Now, she brings her one woman show to the library. Join us for a memorable evening of theater.

Thursday, August 6, 2015:

Corning Area Writer’s Group: Inject some socialization into your solo writing time by join the library’s Adult Creative Writers Group for conversation, inspiration and feedback on writing projects. No sign up is required. This group meets every Thursday from 6-8 pm. On the third Thursday of the month the group meets in the library. On the other Thursdays the group meets at Soul Full Cup CoffeeHouse.

Digital Literacy Walking Club: Using Fitness Trackers, Mobile Music Players and Fitness Apps: Join the Digital Literacy Services Team and learn how to use a fitness tracker, MP3 player and health apps to improve your walking experience. We will have a brief presentation each week discussing popular fitness trackers, MP3 Players and health apps available. Then, we will put on our walking shoes and hit the pavement for a nice walk around our new Tioga Avenue walking park and utilize some of those devices to see how they work! Bring your walking shoes, bottled water and any new health tracking device you might already own or try one of ours!

Phenomenon and Paranormal Investigations: Exploring Seneca and Beyond: What lurks in the depths of the Finger Lakes? Join us for a viewing of the short documentary “Exploring Seneca” from PPI Investigations then hear stories about their other investigations and ask questions of your own.

Friday, August 14, 2015:

Monthly Science Fiction Film: Silent Running (1972): As this science fiction classic opens, botanist Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) has spent eight years aboard the space freighter “Valley Forge” preserving the only botanical specimens left from Earth under huge geodesic domes. When he receives orders to destroy the project and return home, Lowell rebels and hijacks the freighter, while plunging the craft into the gaseous Rings of Saturn. From that moment on, he has only the trees, the gardens and two “Drone” robots, Huey and Dewey, to keep him company on his greatest adventure of all. MPAA Rating: G. Run Time: 90 minutes.

Southeast Steuben County Library Adult Services & Digital Literacy Programs Week of June 22, 2015

Sticky Notes: a thematic book club: The first theme, for May 26th, will be “Beginnings.” Simply pick a book to read related to that theme in some way, fiction or non-fiction, any genre, then come tell the group about it – what it was about, what you liked, or didn’t like. Sticky Notes is held the 4th Tuesday of the month @ 1 pm

3 D Printer Program: Jewelry: This program will include a brief 3 D Printer presentation and then attendees will modify select Jewelry templates from the Makerbot companion website Thingiverse to customize and print bracelets, necklaces & pendants.

Note: Because the 3 D Printer Process takes a while – attendees will have to pick up their creations at a later date.

Wednesday, June 24, 2015:

Exploring Excel Workshop: Join guest presenter DJ Dates; Assistant Professor in Computer & Information Science at Corning Community College and learn more about Microsoft Excel! This class will BUILD on the basics of Excel. Attendees will learn how to do Simple Functions, Loan Payment Function and Relative, Absolute & Mixed Cell Referencing. You will also create an Amortization Table and learn how to Link Data across Worksheets & Files!

Thursday, June 25, 2015:

Computer Security & Privacy Workshop: Computer Science expert D. J. Dates will host this program. Workshop attendees will gain insight on how to safely travel around their computer and the Internet. D. J. will also discuss Encryption and Script Blocking!

Evening Book Talk: Emerging from the Shadows: The Needs of Older Women and The Benefits of Supporting Them by Dr. Ron Hofsess: (TLOW) Trust in the Lives of Older Women- Did you know that women do roughly 2/3 of the work in the world, paid and volunteer, done by people over 60 years of age? And yet, as they age, they lose their support network. What issues do they face and what can we do to help them? Come find out.

If you’ve purchased a new laptop, e-reader, smartphone or tablet and have questions about how to use it – give our Digital Literacy Service staff a call and we’ll set up a time for you to come in and meet with one of our specialist to learn the usage ropes of your device.

And if you have questions about how to use the Internet, how to send email, how to Skype, how to use software including: Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, iTunes or Windows Media Player likewise call us to make an appointment today.

New Weekly 5 Minute Personal Tech Tips & Tricks Video Series

The SSCL Digital Literacy Team is launching a new series of weekly 5 Minute Tech videos!

The idea is to present basic personal technology tip and tricks in 5 minutes or less.

And this week our video clip shows you how to clear your web browsing history with a keyboard shortcut. 

Clearing your web browsing history is a useful trick to know in case you ever use a computer that is not your own to access your email, your banking information or simply to search the web — because if you clear your browsing history on a computer that is not your own — then that computer won’t remember which web pages you’ve looked at!
