Friday, October 2, 2015:

Friday Night Free Film: Safety Not Guaranteed (2012): Anyone tired of predictable Hollywood blowhardism needs to check out Safety Not Guaranteed. This little gem of a movie keeps the viewer guessing from pretty much the first frame, and one becomes so engaged and excited to see what’s around the next corner or in the next scene. Safety Not Guaranteed is briskly directed by Colin Trevorrow, and features a quirky script by Derek Connolly that’s warm-hearted but never self-conscious–quite an achievement. The premise: Darius (the splendidly low-key Aubrey Plaza) is a young, disaffected, and probably underpaid intern at Seattle magazine who’s plucked, along with another intern, Arnau (Karan Soni), to accompany staff writer Jeff (Jake Johnson) on what could be a story of a lifetime, or a crackpot dead-end. What the three journalists find on the windblown Washington coast is a man, Kenneth (Mark Duplass), who’s convinced he’s cracked the secret to time travel and seeks a companion for the adventure. Kenneth is also convinced he’s being followed by government agents. Yet somehow this oddball-in-the-woods bonds with young Darius, with each being intrigued, yet not quite trusting, the other. The story arc is well paced and never predictable, and involves subplots with the romantic lives of both Arnau and Jeff. Cameos by Mary Lynn Rajskub as the brisk magazine editor and Kristen Bell as a mysterious character from Kenneth’s past only serve to add richness to Safety Not Guaranteed. Bonus: It’s refreshing to see a movie set in Seattle and environs that’s actually filmed there, and not in nearby Vancouver, B.C. The extras include a making-of featurette that’s inspiring to anyone who loves grassroots movies and moviemaking. –A.T. Hurley, Amazon Review. MPAA Rating: R. Run Time: 86 min.

Friday Night Free Films are held the first and third Friday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Laura Beer Community Room.

And our Monthly Science Fiction Film is shown the second Friday of each month.

Enjoy films on our big screen!

Tuesday, July 14, 2015:

SSCL’s Makerspace: Creation Station – Open From 1- 4 p.m. To answer the obvious question that some people will have regarding the new Southeast Steuben County Library Makerspace – that being simply “What is a Makerspace?” We’re going to offer a little bit of recent library history!

Public libraries have always been places where people can go to access information, to acquire knowledge, learn new skills and create projects.

With the dawn of the Computer & Internet Age public libraries expanded their offerings to patrons and became places where anyone could go to use computers and the Internet for free; and create computer based projects that they could then share with others across the globe.

And the role of offering patrons access to technology that they can use to learn and create projects has evolved in the last few years to include yet a new role – that of offering patrons designated places within public libraries where they can go to create computer & 3 D Printer projects, audio projects, video projects and even more traditional hands on projects including sewing, knitting, crafting, and scrapbooking projects.

These new creation places within public libraries are known as Makerspaces.

In keeping with the times, the Southeast Steuben County Library has just installed a Makerspace called Creation Station. Creation Station is open from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays – come and check it out!

Friday Night Free Film: 50/50 (2011): Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen team up to beat the odds in a film that Rolling Stone calls achingly hilarious and heartfelt. Diagnosed with spinal cancer, 27 year old Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) navigates the road to recovery with the sometimes overbearing support of his crude best friend (Rogen), his smothering mother (Angelica Huston) and an inexperienced therapist (Anna Kendrick). Inspired by a true story of writer Will Reiser, 50/50 is an honest yet hysterically funny account of a young man’s journey toward healing. MPAA Rating: R. Run Time: 100 minutes.
