Monthly Science Fiction Film: 12 Monkeys (2009): Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to save the human race from a deadly virus that has forced mankind into dank underground communities in the future. Along his travels, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) and a mental patient, brilliantly portrayed by Brad Pitt, who may hold the key to the mysterious rogue group, the Army of the 12 Monkeys, thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease. Believing he can obtain a pure virus sample in order to find a cure in the future, he is met with one riddle after another that puts him in a race with time. This sci-fi masterpiece from the genius mind of Terry Gilliam is a modern-day classic. MPAA Rating: R. Run Time: 130 minutes.

Digital Literacy Walking Club: Using Fitness Trackers, Mobile Music Players and Fitness Apps: Join the Digital Literacy Services Team and learn how to use a fitness tracker, MP3 player and health apps to improve your walking experience. We will have a brief presentation each week discussing popular fitness trackers, MP3 Players and health apps available. Then, we will put on our walking shoes and hit the pavement for a nice walk around our new Tioga Avenue walking park and utilize some of those devices to see how they work! Bring your walking shoes, bottled water and any new health tracking device you might already own or try one of ours!

Monthly Science Fiction Film: Silent Running (1972): As this science fiction classic opens, botanist Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) has spent eight years aboard the space freighter “Valley Forge” preserving the only botanical specimens left from Earth under huge geodesic domes. SSCL’s Makerspace: Creation Station – Open From 1- 4 p.m. To answer the obvious question that some people will have regarding the new Southeast Steuben County Library Makerspace – that being simply “What is a Makerspace?” We’re going to offer a little bit of recent library history!

Public libraries have always been places where people can go to access information, to acquire knowledge, learn new skills and create projects.

With the dawn of the Computer & Internet Age public libraries expanded their offerings to patrons and became places where anyone could go to use computers and the Internet for free; and create computer based projects that they could then share with others across the globe.

And the role of offering patrons access to technology that they can use to learn and create projects has evolved in the last few years to include yet a new role – that of offering patrons designated places within public libraries where they can go to create computer & 3 D Printer projects, audio projects, video projects and even more traditional hands on projects including sewing, knitting, crafting, and scrapbooking projects.

These new creation places within public libraries are known as Makerspaces.

In keeping with the times, the Southeast Steuben County Library has just installed a Makerspace called Creation Station. Creation Station is open from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesdays – come and check it out!

The Throwaways: Screening and Discussion: Film 62 minutes – discussion to follow. The Throwaways explores the devastating impact of police brutality and mass incarceration on the black community through the eyes of activist filmmaker Ira McKinley. This award-winning documentary film speaks directly to the national movement rising up to fight back against a wave of police killings of black people in America.

3 D Printer Program: Jewelry: This program will include a brief 3 D Printer presentation and then attendees will modify select Jewelry templates from the Makerbot companion website Thingiverse to customize and print bracelets, necklaces & pendants.

Note: Because the 3 D Printer Process takes a while – attendees will have to pick up their creations at a later date.

Exploring Excel Workshop: Join guest presenter DJ Dates; Assistant Professor in Computer & Information Science at Corning Community College and learn more about Microsoft Excel! This class will BUILD on the basics of Excel. Attendees will learn how to do Simple Functions, Loan Payment Function and Relative, Absolute & Mixed Cell Referencing. You will also create an Amortization Table and learn how to Link Data across Worksheets & Files!

Come and see the SSCL’s 3 D printer demo at the Chemung County Library District Maker Faire this Saturday, May 30 @ The Steele Memorial Library in Elmira.

Library staff will be there from 11-3 and, in addition to showing off 3 D Printing technology, we’ll be offering information on the new SSCL Makerspace which will be opening July 2.

E-Book News Part 1: E-Book Sales Up 44% In 2012 Over 2011: According to the Association of American Publishers & the Book Industry Study Group’s annual report ebook sales rose to comprise 20% of all books sold in 2012. And to give you an idea of why this is a big deal consider that e-book sales rose 44% in 2012 over the 2011 figures and made publishers $3.042 billion dollars in 2012. So we are quickly moving towards the tipping point where more U.S. consumers will read ebooks instead of print books and thus U.S. Publishing companies will make more money on ebook sales than on print book sales.

E-Book News Part 2: Department of Justice Deems Apple “Ringmaster” In E-Book Anti-Trust Suit: The U.S. Department of Justice has deemed Apple the “Ringmaster” in lawsuit it brought against Apple and five of the six largest publishers in the United States that are collectively known as “The Big Six.” The five publishers Simon & Schuster, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Penguin all settled the DOJ suit last year leaving Apple as the lone company fighting against the Department of Justice suit. Apple is now asserting, in response to the DOJ judgment that Apple was the ringleader that came up with the plain to collude with the previously mentioned Big Five, that it fact it was the Big Five publishers that came up with the collusion plan to fix e-book prices via an Agency Model. The anti-trust suit will go to trial in June and the outcome may have a great impact on how much publisher charge for e-books – we’ll have to wait and see how the DOJ rules to find out.

Disney, which recently purchased the rights to the Star Wars franchise is hosting a series of events titled “Star Wars Weekends” in May & June and as part of the Star Wars celebration is giving fans a chance to put their faces on a 3-D printed Star Wars action figure. The Stormtrooper figures are called “Star Wars D-Tech Me” and cost $99.95 plus shipping and sales tax per figure. So for $100 you can turn yourself into a Star Wars action figure!

And if you think $99.95 is rather a high price to pay for a cool personalized 3-D Star Wars action figure – not to worry! The cost of 3-D Printers is coming down and Staples will even begin to sell a 3D Printer in June so within just a few years you’ll no doubt be able to “print” a personalized Star Wars action figure at a home, office or public library near you for a much cheaper price.
