1919 by Eve L. Ewing

(Available Formats: Print Book, Hoopla instant check out eBook & Audiobook)

The Chicago Race Riot of 1919, the most intense of the riots comprising the nation’s Red Summer, has shaped the last century but is not widely discussed. In 1919, award-winning poet Eve L. Ewing explores the story of this event—which lasted eight days and resulted in thirty-eight deaths and almost 500 injuries—through poems recounting the stories of everyday people trying to survive and thrive in the city. Ewing uses speculative and Afrofuturist lenses to recast history, and illuminates the thin line between the past and the present.

Because of Miss Bridgerton written by Julia Quinn and read by Rosalyn Landor

(Available Formats: Print Book, Hoopla instant check out eBook & Audiobook)

Part 1 of the Rokesbys series

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places… This is not one of those times. Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband… someday. Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should… Or not. There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he’s arrogant, annoying, and she’s absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can’t stand the sight of him, either. But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor… Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can’t abide is the one person they can’t live without…

Black Sun Rising by Matthew Carr: A Novel

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant check out eBook)

A riveting thriller combining real historical events and characters with a sinister detective story of eugenics, racism, and nationalist paranoia.

Barcelona, summer 1909.

When the scientist and explorer Randolph Foulkes is blown up in a random terrorist bomb attack, private detective Harry Lawton is hired by the man’s widow to identify the beneficiary of a large payment Foulkes had made shortly before his death. Lawton’s arrival in the Catalan capital coincides with a series of unusual killings that appear to have been carried out by a blood-drinking animal in the Ramblas district and adds another element of instability to a city already teetering on the brink of insurrection. Lawton soon meets and teams up with Esperanza Claramunt, a young anarchist whose lover was one of the victims of the “beast of the Ramblas,” and the Catalan crime reporter Bernat Mata, who has begun investigating these crimes.

So what begins as a straightforward investigation into presumed marital infidelity turns into something far more sinister, as Lawton probes Foulkes’ connections to the mysterious Explorers Club, the Barcelona political police, and an eccentric Austrian hypnotist. Adrift in a city gripped by rebellion and lawlessness, Lawton enters a labyrinth of murder, corruption, political conflict, and crazed racial pseudo-science where no one’s survival is guaranteed.

Eagle at Taranto by Alan Evans

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant check out eBook)

The story of one of the most daring raids of the Second World War.

The Italian fleet, harboured at Taranto, were proving to be a thorn in the side of the Allied war effort, preventing the spread of operations from Malta to Egypt.

But the sheltering battleships and cruisers were more heavily defended than anything previously attacked by the slow, lumbering, carrier-based torpedo planes.

Enter Mark Ward, an ace pilot in the RAF. Armed only with his wits and his trusty Swordfish biplane, he and his comrades must strike a devastating blow to the Italian fleet, or risk losing the war…

A pulse-pounding thriller based on real events, perfect for fans of Alexander Kent, Douglas Reeman and Alistair MacLean.

Fortune: A Novel by Lenny Bartulin

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant check out eBook)

An audacious, entertaining historical epic spanning continents and centuries, for readers of David Mitchell, Column McCann, Kate Atkinson, and Eleanor Catton.

Fortune is a dazzling, endlessly surprising, and gripping historical novel that opens the day Napoleon leads his victorious Grande Armée into Berlin after having conquered Prussia in battle. As crowds throng the streets to witness this momentous event, a handful of lives that briefly touch are sprung from their orbits and set on courses that will take them across Europe and around the world-their fates and desires sometimes intersecting-to strange lands in the Caribbean and South America, the Australian continent and van Diemen’s Land, and back to a Europe now transformed.

A frustrated general in Napoleon’s army, billeted with one of Berlin’s finest families. Elisabeth, a passionate young woman living with her aunt in that house. A young man of eighteen years and no particular talent, drawn to the smoky coffeehouses where students debate, whom she spies through a window fornicating with a serving girl at the moment Napoleon makes his grand entrance. An entrepreneur in New World exotica with a passion for shrunken heads, to whose house the young man was led for his tryst. A slave from Suriname, Mr. Hendriks, with his resentful white American companion, who have traveled to Berlin to sell a barrel of electric eels for their master. And a student enamored of philosophy, who will join Mr. Hendricks and the American on their return voyage.

Through their stories amid war, cataclysm, colliding cultures, and misadventure, Lenny Bartulin imagines the ways that grand events in extraordinary times can shape the course of ordinary lives.

The Girl From The Channel Islands written by Jenny Lecoat & read by Deryn Edwards

(Available Format: Print Book & Hoopla instant check out Audiobook)

Inspired by true events, the riveting story of a young Jewish woman trapped on the occupied island of Jersey during World War II.

Summer 1940: Hedy Bercu fled Vienna two years ago. Now she watches the skies over Jersey for German planes, convinced that an invasion is imminent. When it finally comes, there is no counterattack from Allied forces-the Channel Islands are simply not worth defending. Most islanders and occupying forces settle into an uneasy coexistence, but for Hedy, the situation is perilously different. For Hedy is Jewish-a fact that could mean deportation, or worse.

With no means of escape, Hedy hides in plain sight, working as a translator for the Germans while silently working against them. She forges a tentative friendship with a sympathetic German officer who is likewise trapped by circumstance. But as the war intensifies, Hedy knows she is in greater danger each day. Soon, her survival will depend not just on her own courage but on the community she has come to cherish and a man who should be her enemy.

Vividly recreating little-known events, this is an unforgettable tale of resilience and bravery, and of the extraordinary power found in quiet acts of heroism and love.

Making Space by Jayne Hardy

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant check out eBook & Audiobook)

How to Live Happier by Setting Boundaries That Work for You

Boundaries and self-care go hand in hand; you can’t have one without the other. We understand the importance of self-care, but how do we protect the space within which we do it?

When we have healthy boundaries, we create a space between us and all else, where we feel safe, clear, and confident in who we are and what we want and need. Our boundaries-the limits we place on what we will and won’t tolerate-define our routines, habits, choices, parenting, jobs, relationships; everything. And there’s nothing more important for our self-care.
In this practical guide, Jayne Hardy-founder and CEO of The Blurt Foundation-helps us explore our existing boundaries (the ones that work for us, and the ones that work against us) and guides us in creating new boundaries that protect our physical, mental, emotional, and digital spaces.

Packed with friendly advice, the latest research, and easy journaling exercises to help you reflect on your own experiences, Making Space is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, disconnected, or walked-on by life, and wants to make a change in an ever-encroaching world.

The Moonlight School by Suzanne Wood Fisher

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant check out eBook)

Haunted by her sister’s mysterious disappearance, Lucy Wilson arrives in Rowan County, Kentucky, in the spring of 1911 to work for Cora Wilson Stewart, superintendent of education. When Cora sends Lucy into the hills to act as scribe for the mountain people, she is repelled by the primitive conditions and intellectual poverty she encounters. Few adults can read and write. Born in those hills, Cora knows the plague of illiteracy. So does Brother Wyatt, a singing schoolmaster who travels through the hills. Involving Lucy and Wyatt, Cora hatches a plan to open the schoolhouses to adults on moonlit nights. The best way to combat poverty, she believes, is to eliminate illiteracy. But will the people come? As Lucy emerges from a life in the shadows, she finds purpose; or maybe purpose finds her. With purpose comes answers to her questions, and something else she hadn’t expected: love.

Inspired by the true events of the Moonlight Schools, this standalone novel from bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher brings to life the story that shocked the nation into taking adult literacy seriously. You’ll finish the last page of this enthralling story with deep gratitude for the gift of reading.

People of Abandoned Character by Clare Whitfield

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant check out eBook)

Marry in haste… Murder at leisure?

London, 1888: Susannah Chapman rushes into marriage to a young and wealthy surgeon. After a passionate honeymoon, she returns home with her new husband wrapped around her little finger. Or so she thinks.

But within the cold confines of their Chelsea townhouse, Thomas’s behaviour begins to unravel. He stays out all night, returning bloodied and full of secrets. The gentle caresses Susannah enjoyed on her wedding night are now just a honeyed memory. She thought she’d married a puppy, but is he, in fact, a wolf?

When the first woman is murdered in Whitechapel, Susannah’s interest is piqued. But as she follows the ongoing hunt for the murderer, she sees a terrifying pattern emerging. Every time Thomas disappears, another victim is found dead. Is it coincidence? Or is her husband the man they call Jack the Ripper?

The Spanish Flu Epidemic And Its Influence On History by Jaime Breitnauer

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant check out eBook)

On the second Monday of March 1918, the world changed forever. What seemed like a harmless cold morphed into a global pandemic that would wipe out as many as a hundred-million people – ten times as many as the Great War. German troops faltered lending the allies the winning advantage, India turned its sights to independence while South Africa turned to God. In Western Samoa a quarter of the population died; in some parts of Alaska, whole villages were wiped out. Civil unrest sparked by influenza shaped nations and heralded a new era of public health where people were no longer blamed for contracting disease. Using real case histories, we take a journey through the world in 1918, and look at the impact of Spanish flu on populations from America, to France, to the Arctic, and the scientific legacy this deadly virus has left behind.

Have a great week!

At the Edge of the Haight by Katherine Seligman

(Available Formats: Print Book, Hoopla instant checkout eBook & Audiobook)

The 10th Winner of the 2019 PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, Awarded by Barbara Kingsolver

“What a read this is, right from its startling opening scene. But even more than plot, it’s the richly layered details that drive home a lightning bolt of empathy. To read At the Edge of the Haight is to live inside the everyday terror and longings of a world that most of us manage not to see, even if we walk past it on sidewalks every day. At a time when more Americans than ever find themselves at the edge of homelessness, this book couldn’t be more timely.”

—Barbara Kingsolver, author of Unsheltered and The Poisonwood Bible

Maddy Donaldo, homeless at twenty, has made a family of sorts in the dangerous spaces of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. She knows whom to trust, where to eat, when to move locations, and how to take care of her dog. It’s the only home she has. When she unwittingly witnesses the murder of a young homeless boy and is seen by the perpetrator, her relatively stable life is upended. Suddenly, everyone from the police to the dead boys’ parents want to talk to Maddy about what she saw. As adults pressure her to give up her secrets and reunite with her own family before she meets a similar fate, Maddy must decide whether she wants to stay lost or be found. Against the backdrop of a radically changing San Francisco, a city which embraces a booming tech economy while struggling to maintain its culture of tolerance, At the Edge of the Haight follows the lives of those who depend on makeshift homes and communities.

As judge Hillary Jordan says, “This book pulled me deep into a world I knew little about, bringing the struggles of its young, homeless inhabitants—the kind of people we avoid eye contact with on the street—to vivid, poignant life. The novel demands that you take a close look. If you knew, could you still ignore, fear, or condemn them? And knowing, how can you ever forget?”

The Butterfly House by Katrine Engberg

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Detectives Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner from the #1 international bestseller The Tenant—which New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs heralded as a “stunning debut”—return in this compulsively readable thriller as they race to solve a series of sordid murders linked to some of the most vulnerable patients in a Danish hospital.

Hospitals are supposed to be places of healing. But in the coronary care unit at one of Copenhagen’s leading medical centers, a nurse fills a syringe with an overdose of heart medication and stealthily enters the room of an older male patient.

Six days earlier, a paperboy on his route in central Copenhagen stumbles upon a macabre find: the naked body of a dead woman, lying in a fountain with arms marked with small incisions. Cause of death? Exsanguination—the draining of all the blood in her body.

Clearly, this is no ordinary murder. Lead Investigator Jeppe Kørner, recovering from a painful divorce and in the throes of a new relationship, takes on the investigation. His partner, Anette Werner, now on maternity leave after an unexpected pregnancy, is restless at home with a demanding newborn and an equally demanding husband. While Jeppe pounds the streets looking for answers, Anette decides to do a little freelance sleuthing. But operating on her own exposes her to dangers she can’t even begin to fathom.

As the investigation ventures into dark corners, it uncovers the ambition and greed that festers beneath the surface of caregiving institutions—all the more shocking for their depravity—and what Jeppe and Anette discover will turn their blood as cold as ice….

Fossil Men: The Quest for the Oldest Skeleton and the Origins of Humankind by Kermit Pattison

(Available Formats: Print Book)

“Riveting. … Pattison’s uncanny ability [is] to write evocatively about science. … In this, he is every bit as good as the best scientist writers.” —New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

“Brilliant. … A work of staggering depth.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune

A decade in the making, Fossil Men is a scientific detective story played out in anatomy and the natural history of the human body: the first full-length account of the discovery of a startlingly unpredicted human ancestor more than a million years older than Lucy

It is the ultimate mystery: where do we come from? In 1994, a team led by fossil-hunting legend Tim White uncovered a set of ancient bones in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Radiometric dating of nearby rocks indicated the resulting skeleton, classified as Ardipithecus ramidus—nicknamed “Ardi”—was an astounding 4.4 million years old, more than a million years older than the world-famous “Lucy.” The team spent the next 15 years studying the bones in strict secrecy, all while continuing to rack up landmark fossil discoveries in the field and becoming increasingly ensnared in bitter disputes with scientific peers and Ethiopian bureaucrats. When finally revealed to the public, Ardi stunned scientists around the world and challenged a half-century of orthodoxy about human evolution—how we started walking upright, how we evolved our nimble hands, and, most significantly, whether we were descended from an ancestor that resembled today’s chimpanzee. But the discovery of Ardi wasn’t just a leap forward in understanding the roots of humanity—it was an attack on scientific convention and the leading authorities of human origins, triggering an epic feud about the oldest family skeleton.

In Fossil Men, acclaimed journalist Kermit Pattison brings us a cast of eccentric, obsessive scientists, including White, an uncompromising perfectionist whose virtuoso skills in the field were matched only by his propensity for making enemies; Gen Suwa, a Japanese savant whose deep expertise about teeth rivaled anyone on Earth; Owen Lovejoy, a onetime creationist-turned-paleoanthropologist with radical insights into human locomotion; Berhane Asfaw, who survived imprisonment and torture to become Ethiopia’s most senior paleoanthropologist; Don Johanson, the discoverer of Lucy, who had a rancorous falling out with the Ardi team; and the Leakeys, for decades the most famous family in paleoanthropology.

Based on a half-decade of research in Africa, Europe and North America, Fossil Men is not only a brilliant investigation into the origins of the human lineage, but the oldest of human emotions: curiosity, jealousy, perseverance and wonder.

Mr. Nobody by Catherine Steadman

(Available Formats: Print Book, Large Print eBook & Downloadable Audiobook)

He wants to remember. She needs to forget. . . . Memento meets Sharp Objects in a gripping psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water.

“Twisty . . . highly imaginative . . . deliciously provocative.”—The Washington Post

Who is Mr. Nobody?

When a man is found on a British beach, drifting in and out of consciousness, with no identification and unable to speak, interest in him is sparked immediately. From the hospital staff who find themselves inexplicably drawn to him, to international medical experts who are baffled by him, to the national press who call him Mr. Nobody, everyone wants answers. Who is this man? And what happened to him?

Some memories are best forgotten.

Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Emma Lewis is asked to assess the patient in a small town deep in the English countryside. This is her field of expertise, this is the chance she’s been waiting for, and this case could make her name known across the world. But therein lies the danger. Emma left this same town fourteen years ago and has taken great pains to cover all traces of her past since then.

Places aren’t haunted . . . people are.

But now something—or someone—is calling her back. And the more time she spends with her patient, the more alarmed she becomes that he knows the one thing about her that nobody is supposed to know.

The Other Mother by Dick Matthews

(Available Formats: Print Book)

From Matthew Dicks, the beloved author of Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, comes The Other Mother, a novel about a teenage boy coping with the rupture of his family by viewing his mother in an unusual light.

The one he loves most, is the one he knows least.

Thirteen-year-old Michael Parsons is dealing with a lot. His father’s sudden death; his mother’s new husband, Glen, who he loathes; his two younger siblings, who he looks after more and more now that his mother works extra shifts.

And then one day, Michael wakes up and his mother is gone. In her place is an exact, duplicate mother. The ‘other mother’. No one else seems to notice the real version is missing. His brother, his sister, and even Glen act as if everything’s normal. But Michael knows in his heart that this mother is not his. And he begins to panic.

What follows is a big-hearted coming-of-age story of a boy struggling with an unusual disorder that poses unparalleled challenges—but also, as he discovers, offers him unique opportunities.

Pickard County Atlas: A Novel by Chris Harding Thornton

(Available Formats: Print Book)

An atmospheric, slow-burning beauty of a book, rich with raw-edged lyricism and achingly real characters.” —Tana French, author of The Searcher

Small-town secrets loom large in this spellbinding debut about the aftershocks of crime and trauma that shake a Nebraskan town.

In a dusty town in Nebraska’s rugged sandhills, weary sheriff’s deputy Harley Jensen patrols the streets at night, on the lookout for something—anything—out of the ordinary. It’s July 1978, and the heat is making people ornery, restless. That and the Reddick family patriarch has decided, decades after authorities ended the search for his murdered boy’s body, to lay a headstone. Instead of bringing closure, this decision is the spark that threatens to set Pickard County ablaze.

On a fateful night after the memorial service, Harley tails the youngest Reddick and town miscreant, Paul, through the abandoned farms and homes outside their run-down town. The pursuit puts Harley in the path of Pam Reddick, a restless young woman looking for escape, bent on cutting the ties of motherhood and marriage. Filled with desperate frustration, Pam is drawn to Harley’s dark history, not unlike that of her husband, Rick—a man raised in the wreckage of a brother’s violent death and a mother’s hardened fury.

Unfolding over six tense days, Pickard County Atlas sets Harley and the Reddicks on a collision course—propelling them toward an incendiary moment that will either redeem or end them. Engrossing, darkly funny, and real, Chris Harding Thornton’s debut rings with authenticity and a nuanced sense of place even as it hums with menace, introducing an astonishing new voice in suspense.

The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown

(Available Formats: Print Book, CD Audiobook, eBook & Downloadable Audiobook)

This is the “delightful” (People) New York Times bestseller that’s earned raves from Sarah Blake, Helen Simonson, and reviewers everywhere-the story of three sisters who love each other, but just don’t happen to like each other very much…

Three sisters have returned to their childhood home, reuniting the eccentric Andreas family. Here, books are a passion (there is no problem a library card can’t solve) and TV is something other people watch. Their father-a professor of Shakespeare who speaks almost exclusively in verse-named them after the Bard’s heroines. It’s a lot to live up to.

The sisters have a hard time communicating with their parents and their lovers, but especially with one another. What can the shy homebody eldest sister, the fast-living middle child, and the bohemian youngest sibling have in common? Only that none has found life to be what was expected; and now, faced with their parents’ frailty and their own personal disappointments, not even a book can solve what ails them…

When Snow Falls by Brenda Novak

(Available Formats: Print Book, Large Print & eBook)

“Full of mystery, humor, and oh-so sexy scenes. I couldn’t wait to see if love would win in the end.”—First for Women

After growing up in cheap motels, moving from town to town with her sister and mother, Cheyenne Christensen is grateful to be on her own. She’s grateful, too, for the friends she found once her family settled in California. But she’s troubled by the mystery of her earliest memories, most of which feature a smiling blonde woman. A woman who isn’t her mother.

Although Cheyenne has repeatedly asked for explanations, the people who could help aren’t talking. Cheyenne is set on finding answers, but without so much as a birth certificate, it won’t be easy.

Things get even more complicated when her closest friend is attracted to the man Cheyenne has secretly loved for years. For Eve’s sake, she decides to step aside—which lands her right in the arms of Dylan Amos, oldest and baddest of the hell-raising Amos brothers. He’s the kind of guy she’s sworn to avoid. She can’t afford to make a mistake, not when she finally has a chance to learn who she really is and change her life for the better. But…maybe there’s more to Dylan than she thought. Maybe letting him go would be a bigger mistake.

Winter at the White Oaks Lodge by Abbie Williams

(Available Formats: Hoopla instant checkout eBook)

A gorgeous stranger in an old photograph. A desperate search from another century. And a mystery Camille Gordon cannot resist. It has been two years since Camille discovered that she was going to be a teenage mother. Abandoned by her child’s father, Camille is determined that she and her daughter will make it on their own. When she discovers an old picture hidden in a trunk in her grandmother’s attic, Camille is at once drawn to the man in the image, standing near his horse in the light of a long-ago sunset. The haunting photo leads her to the Carters, who run the nearby inn, White Oaks Lodge. Each clue brings her closer to her own destiny-a true love so intense not even time can wither it.

The Winter Lodge by Susan Wiggs

(Available Format: Print Book, Large Print & eBook)

On the longest night of the year, Jenny Majesky loses everything in a devastating house fire. But among the ashes she finds an unusual treasure hidden amid her grandfather’s belongings, one that starts her on a search for the truth, and on a path toward a life that she never imagined. The Winter Lodge, a remote cabin owned by her half sister on the shores of Willow Lake, becomes a safe refuge for Jenny, where she and local police chief Rourke McKnight try to sort out the mysteries revealed by the fire.

But when a blizzard traps them together, Jenny, accustomed to the safe predictability of running the family bakery, suddenly doesn’t feel so secure. For even as Rourke shelters her from the storm outside, she knows her heart is at risk. Now, following her dreams might mean walking away from her one chance at love.

Have a great week!

Suggested Listening February 5, 2021

Hi everyone, welcome to our Suggested Listening posting for this week!

Our Suggested Listening postings focus on the music of the past, with a few new songs mixed in for good measure.

Suggested Listening postings come out weekly, on Fridays, and the next Suggested Listening posting will be out on Friday, February 12, 2021.

Bittersweet by Lianne La Havas (Genre: Vocal, Singer-Songwriter, Pop-Rock, Folk, Soul)

Bittersweet is a light, sultry song sung by the marvelous Lianne La Havas; the song is from her third album Lianne La Havas (2020), which is available for instant check out in the Hoopla catalog and is our Hoopla recommended album of the week!

The Hoopla Recommended section is at the end of each weekly posting.

Black Coffee by Peggy Lee (Genre: Vocal)

The great Peggy Lee with a lovely, sultry version of Black Coffee from her album of the same name – Black Coffee (1956). Gotta have coffee!

Deeper Than Dreams by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Septet (Genre: Jazz)

“Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy,” says famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. At a time when America—and indeed, the whole world—finds itself at a crossroads, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer has been inspired to write a poignant and buoyant work, The Democracy! Suite, which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together.” – Wynton Marsalis

Deeper Than Dreams is from the new album The Democracy! Suite (2021).

East Bay by Boney James (Genre: Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Easy Listening)

Mellow and upbeat jazz from saxophonist Boney James and his band; from the album Sweet Thing (1997).

Girl From The North Country by Bob Dylan (Genre: Folk)

Pre-electric Bob Dylan with a terrific, introspective song from his second album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963).

Hickory Wind by The Byrds (Genre: Country, Country-Rock)

The late-sixties Byrds, featuring Graham Parsons, Roger McGuinn & Chris Hillman, went country with a terrific crossover album, Sweethearts of the Rodeo (1968). The LP, which sounds as fresh today as it did then, was released at a time when country music was looked down upon by many rock fans.

This is a very upbeat album; if you haven’t heard it – check it out!

I’m Talking About You by Chuck Berry (Genre: Rock & Roll)

Arguably the greatest innovator of Rock n’ Roll with a terrific song from his album New Juke Box Hits (1961).

Nobody To Blame by Chris Stapleton (Genre: Country, Country-Rock)

Chris Stapleton was a successful songwriter in Nashville for ten years before recording his debut album Traveller (2015); Nobody To Blame is one of the top-notch tunes on the LP!

Oh Lady, Be Good by Ella Fitzgerald (Genre: Jazz, Vocal)

The classic Gershwin song; from the album Lullabies To Birdland (1955).

The Times They Are A-Changin’ by Bob Dylan (Genre: Folk)

I don’t usually include two songs by the same artist in my weekly music posting; however, for Bob Dylan, whose sixties work is, if I can borrow a vintage phrase “out of sight”, I’m going to make an exception this week!

I’ve been listening to a lot of Dylan’s music recently; and the expression “what goes around, comes around” seems right to me, as regards to listening to music that reflects the transitional era we are living in. Dylan recorded most of his best albums in the sixties, which was another transitional era, and many of those songs aptly reflect those turbulent times and, by extension ours, including this song which is from Dylan’s third album of the same name – The Times They Are A-Changin’ (1964).
