Fairy Tale by Stephen King

(Available Formats: Print Book & CD audiobook)

King’s latest novel follows Charlie, a teen boy who befriends local recluse Mr. Bowditch and his elderly dog, Radar. Soon after, Mr. Bowditch passes away, leaving everything to Charlie, including a cassette tape that reveals the existence of a portal to another world in an old garden shed. Hoping to use the magic of this other world to restore Radar’s youth, Charlie enters Empis and becomes drawn into a desperate struggle to prevent this already sick and dying world from being finally destroyed. King’s fantasy otherworld, which some characters posit is the source of many fairy-tale or fantastic stories, is by its nature a bit of a hodgepodge of various existing references, with some occasional striking images of its own (millions of monarch butterflies, a telepathic cricket). While this novel certainly doesn’t break new ground for King or for the fantasy genre, it should please King’s existing fans, especially those who enjoyed the more complex otherworlds of the Dark Tower series or King’s earlier fantasy work, The Eyes of the Dragon (1987). Mad About You: A Novel by Mhairi McFarlane

Scott turns around and writes a detailed Facebook post, accusing Harriet of all the abuse he perpetrated. But this brings another of Scott’s ex-girlfriends out of the woodwork, and the women plot public revenge. Despite its heavy themes of coping with past abuse and loss, McFarlane’s latest, following Just Last Night (2021), is a mostly lighthearted romp through friendship, love, and starting over. The Mamas: What I Learned about Kids, Class, and Race from Moms Not Like Me by Helena Andrews-Dyer

Washington Post reporter Andrews-Dyer (Bitch Is the New Black) shares what she picked up in mommy groups in this candid take on race, class, and motherhood. Upon becoming a mother, Andrews-Dyer felt ambivalent about joining her neighborhood’s predominantly white support group, the Mamas. But feeling she needed a sense of community, she signed on, and soon she was confronted by tone-deaf comments (“you can’t compare them,” one white mom quipped to Andrews-Dyer about their children). An offshoot group called “The Super Cool Moms” was born, in which Andrews-Dyer was still the only Black woman, and out of that came an “all-Black pod” with some friends. Her experiences in the three groups led Andrews-Dyer to reevaluate the idea of belonging (“being Black and a mother didn’t necessarily mean we wanted the same exact things for our kids”) and to come to some striking conclusions, as when she writes “what I really wanted, deep down in the sunken place, was to parent like . All the love but minus the crippling legacy of institutionalized socioeconomic oppression and the baked-in fear that your child might get murdered.” She also mixes in some sharp reporting on topics including the importance of talking to kids about race. This frank portrait of motherhood hits all the marks. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review

The Trojan War Museum and Other Stories by Ayse Papatya Bucak

The 10 stories in Bucak’s beguiling debut play with traditional narrative forms and explore the author’s Turkish roots. In “The History of Girls,” told in the plural “we,” a group of girls trapped in the rubble of a school explosion from a blown gas line are visited by the ghosts of their dead classmates. “An Ottoman Arabesque” tells the story of 19th-century Ottoman ambassador Khalil Bey via observations on his assortment of erotic artwork, while the collection’s title story spans centuries as Apollo wanders the Earth, visiting different Trojan War museums and ruminating on the traumas of battle. In “Mysteries of the Mountain South,” the story of a recent college grad caring for her dying grandmother is enhanced with the epistolary elements of blog posts. “A Cautionary Tale” breaks the fourth wall, telling the story of a Turkish wrestler and then using the story to interrogate an unnamed character on the story’s validity. “The Dead,” about a sponge magnate’s encounter with a survivor of the Armenian genocide, includes birth and death dates for each major character. The author astutely deploys a range of styles and techniques that create a cerebral, multifarious collection. The Verifiers by Jane Pek

A cool, cerebral, and very funny novel about a young woman who works for an agency that investigates potential online dating partners and who has relationship questions–and quests–of her own. Claudia Lin has a pretty excellent job. She works at Veracity, a detective agency that helps vet potential partners for clients pursuing romance via dating apps. Claudia is very much into literary mysteries–her go-to comfort reading is a murder-mystery series featuring one Inspector Yuan–as well as literature in general. Her astute, often acerbic observations prove a heady combination, contributing to Claudia’s engaging voice: She keeps the narrative moving at a fast-paced clip. When a new client wants Veracity to investigate a recent online flirt who’s ghosted said client–and when this request is followed in quick succession by another verification request–Claudia is all in, ably abetted by Finders Keepers, a proprietary app that can track people’s whereabout through their cellphones. Meanwhile, in her personal life, Claudia has a stake in keeping her own secrets hidden from her more conventional immigrant family: Not only is she dead set against the type of Chinese husband her mom wishes for her, she also regularly measures herself against her much higher achieving brother and sister. Beautifully complemented by entertaining secondary characters that include Claudia’s artistic roommate, Max, and Lionel, Claudia’s sister’s boyfriend, Claudia is the seductive protagonist in a tale that delves into the dark heart of contemporary technology, not to mention the foibles of the human heart. With an inquisitive, clever, and curious narrator, this adventurous mystery is both scary and hilarious. – Kikus Review

Hi everyone, here are our streaming recommendations for September.

Streaming recommendations are posted on the first Saturday of the month. And the next streaming recommendations post will be published on Saturday, October 1.

Andor (September 21) (Disney Plus)

The final Star Wars Disney Plus series of the year is Andor, which already feels like a great excuse to go rewatch the excellent Rogue One. This series starts off five years before that movie, and will give us more insight into how Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) became the man who helped steal the Death Star plans. But it’s about more than just his personal story, as Andor is also telling the story of the rise of the rebellion. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) plays a key role in all of this, and it looks like we’ll see a younger version of Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and possibly learn about how he got those robotic legs. Blondie (September 28) (Netflix)

One of the most talked about films of the year is finally making its debut on Netflix this month. Adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name, Blonde is a historical psychological drama film that offers a fictionalized account of the inner life of 1950s and 1960s icon Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas). The NC-17 rated film gives viewers a unique look at Monroe, taking us from her early traumatic years growing up as Norma Jeane Mortensen to changing her name and image as she made her move to Hollywood and the silver screen, to all of the exploitation, substance issues, and romantic drama she experienced through it all behind the scenes in her personal life. Fans of Monroe, Old Hollywood, and film in general need to make it their mission to see Blonde as soon as it drops towards the end of September, only on Netflix.- Decider Review

Elvis (September 2) (HBO Max)

To describe Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis as simply another biopic would not do it justice. This movie is a deep-fried, over-the-top ice cream sundae, and the movie leans into it. Everything about this film is too much—and it rocks.

The story follows the life of Elvis Presley, played with overwhelming stamina of Austin Butler, from the star’s impoverished birth to unglamorous death. It’s a story of addiction on many levels, namely Elvis’s endless need for the public’s love and adoration. It’s a big movie, one that suits a movie theater experience, but you can check it out in your own home right at the top of the month with HBO Max. – Lifehacker Review

Hocus Pocus Two (Disney Plus) (September 30)

The Sanderson witches are back! And it only took nearly 30 years this time, not 300. A sequel to the 1993 comedy/horror movie Hocus Pocus seems completely unnecessary yet also totally welcome by its now grown-up fans (who likely have tweens of their own). Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy look like they’re having a blast in returning as the sisters who first terrorized girls in Salem in 1693, then again in 1993. In the modern day, they appear once more when the Black Flame Candle is lit by unsuspecting high schoolers. They must work together to stop the witches before they cause complete chaos. – KW, Tom’s Guide Review

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Amazon Prime Video) (September 2) *

It’s been a long time coming, but the prequel series that delves into the story of how those coveted rings were forged, distributed and ultimately destroyed hits Prime Video this month. Sure, there’s no Gandalf or Gollum to invest in when we return to Middle Earth, but at least we’ll see a few familiar elven faces as the episodes unroll. Spy Review

Los Spooky, Season Two (HBO Max) (September 16)

If you like What We Do In The Shadows, then you should get caught up on the absurd, critically-acclaimed Los Espookys. In the first season of this dark comedy we were introduced to a zany group of friends who are in the business of creating spooky, horror-inspired experiences for their clients. The new season finds Los Espookys leader and gore enthusiast Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) haunted by the ghost of a murdered beauty pageant queen. Created by and starring Fred Armisen, Ana Fábrega and Julio Torres, season two is a long time coming due to a three-year pandemic delay. Plus, the series is bilingual (with subtitles) and features a predominantly Latino cast. – Lifehacker Review

Pantheon (AMC+) (September 1)

AMC’s first animated series drops this weekend to make us all think twice about the concept of artificial intelligence. The show revolves around a young woman who receives messages from an unknown number claiming to be her dead dad. But when she pursues the truth, a more sinister story emerges. Paul Dano, William Hurt, Taylor Schilling, Lara Pulver and Maude Apatow voice the series. Spy Overview

Reboot (Hulu) (September 20)

We’re suckers for meta Hollywood projects, and this comedy is as meta as it gets. Reboot revolves around a dysfunctional cast that’s forced back together to reboot (okay, technically revive) their comedy years after it originally aired. Of course, none of them have grown since their time in the limelight — they’ve backtracked, and now they need to learn to get along. Mark leads a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. When a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it begins a journey to discover the truth about their jobs. – Radio Times)

The U.S. And The Holocaust (PBS) (September 18)

The U.S. and the Holocaust is a three-part, six hour series that examines America’s response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. Americans consider themselves a “nation of immigrants,” but as the catastrophe of the Holocaust unfolded in Europe, the United States proved unwilling to open its doors to more than a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of desperate people seeking refuge. Through riveting firsthand testimony of witnesses and survivors who as children endured persecution, violence and flight as their families tried to escape Hitler, this series delves deeply into the tragic human consequences of public indifference, bureaucratic red tape and restrictive quota laws in America. Did the nation fail to live up to its ideals? This is a history to be reckoned with. – PBS

Be The Serpent by Seanan McGuire

At long last, Toby has actually managed to get married. True to form, what that means is that she’s well-rested for the chaos to come: and there is going to be so much chaos. McGuire packs a lot into this one, both story and history. As soon as the matter of Rayseline Torquill has been resolved, events start to spiral. Toby, sent to her childhood friend’s home by the court seers, isn’t quite fast enough to avert tragedy. She can ride the blood, though, and find out who is responsible. At least, that’s how it should work. From there, the horrible mess that Oberon made by abdicating after Maeve’s Ride was broken and Titania disappeared starts to unravel. McGuire’s ability to pack cascading disasters into a single book is showcased here, with a satisfying number of threads picked up from earlier in the series (most recently, When Sorrows Come, 2021) and woven into something both inevitable and surprising. Fortunately, McGuire has proven again and again that she can follow up a cliffhanger ending with spectacular payoffs, and fans will find the path to the cliff well worth the effort. – Booklist Review

Diary of a Misfit: A Memoir and a Mystery by Casey Parks

In this tantalizing blend of personal history and reportage, Washington Post reporter Parks seeks out the story of an enigmatic small-town country singer to reckon with her own fraught past. When, in 2002, Parks’s grandmother shared that she’d once been neighbors in the 1950s with “a woman who lived as a man” named Roy Hudgins, Parks pledged to find out what happened to him. Scenes from My Life: A Memoir by Michael K. Williams

First on the agenda is a plot that might destroy the Double Comfort Furniture Store, the life’s work of Phuti, the husband of Precious’ friend and colleague, Grace Makutsi. A rival business, specializing in minimalist “Twenty-first Century Chairs,” is slashing prices and using the alluring, ever-scheming Violet Sephotho (sworn enemy of Grace Makutsi) in its advertising. Then there’s the surly teenager and his role in derailing the happiness of Grace’s childhood friend, a woman who was forced, as a teen herself, to bear a child after being raped. Precious and Grace join forces in an elaborate sting operation designed to expose these agents of mayhem. Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs

A new threat comes to Washington State’s Tri-Cities in Briggs’s solid 13th Mercy Thompson urban fantasy (after Smoke Bitten). Secrets come out and tensions rise among the Columbia Basin shape-shifter pack when it is implicated in the disappearance of Wulfe, the vampire who has been stalking shape-shifter mechanic Mercy. Marsilia, the mistress of the local vampire seethe, threatens to end the alliance between vampires and werewolves if the pack can’t prove its innocence by finding and returning Wulfe to her. Complication arises when a series of dead bodies turn up throughout the Tri-Cities in murders that mimic the killings featured in a new horror movie and appear to be magic in origin. With the pack in danger and Mercy herself targeted by the murderer, she and her allies race to uncover who—or what—is doing the killings. As they peel back the layers of the mystery, they find themselves enmeshed in a more complex and much older supernatural plot. Briggs does a good job integrating exposition into her story, offering fans a refresher course on the characters and their backstories and even allowing new readers to jump in fairly easily. This keeps the series going strong.

The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

DEBUT Mika Moon lives a very lonely life most of the time. Orphaned at a young age, Mika was raised by a series of nannies and tutors. Other than infrequent meetings with her fellow witches, Mika doesn’t get to share her love of magic with others, so she starts a YouTube channel where she plays a fake witch. She never expected anyone to realize she was a real witch, but to her surprise, she gets a message asking her to tutor three young witches. Mika knows she shouldn’t take this job, but the idea of sharing her passion for potions and spells with the young witches is hard to resist. Before long, she finds herself a welcome part of their little found family–by all except the cute, grumpy librarian named Jamie. Mika and her new family shine with a glow all their own. This book is like a warm welcome home and is sure to find itself being a comfort read for many. VERDICT Mandanna’s (Kiki Kallira Conquers a Curse) first adult novel is a positively adorable romantic fantasy and a must-buy for all public libraries. – Starred Library Journal Review
