Moving on to our suggested viewing title of the week; this week our recommendation is
The Straight Story (1999)
Available Formats: The Straight Story can be streamed from the usual online sources and is also available on DVD at the library.
About The Movie: The movie is based on the real-life experiences of Alvin Straight. As the movie opens, viewers meet 73-year-old Alvin; a retired laborer who is living in Laurens, Iowa and who cannot see well enough to drive a car. Alvin discovers that his brother Henry Straight, who is living in Blue River Wisconsin, has had a stroke. Alvin decides to go visit Henry; and as he can’t drive a car, the very determined Alvin loads up a trailer with supplies and hooks it up to his 1966 John Deere tractor to drive the 240 miles from his Iowa home to his brother’s home in Wisconsin.
During the trip, Alvin meets a variety of people who wish to help him, his tractor breaks down more than once and must be repaired; and at one point he even has to pause in his journey for a few days until his next social security check comes through so he has funds to continue his journey. It takes him six weeks but Alvin finally makes it to Laurens to see Henry.
The movie was directed by David Lynch and stars Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek and Harry Dean Stanton.
