Our Suggested Listening postings focus on the music of the past, with a few new songs mixed in for good measure.

Boom Tic Boom by Allison Miller (Genre: Jazz)

A terrific drum solo by the great drummer Allison Miller.

Recorded live during the Angel City Jazz Festival in 2014.

Cantaloupe Island by Herbie Hancock (Genre: Jazz)

A great song from the equally great Herbie Hancock, from his album Empyrean Isles (1964).

Colors/Dance by George Winston (Genre: New Age, Piano)

From pianist Winston’s classic Windham Hill album Autumn (1980).

I Can Still Hear You by Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche (Genre: Folk)

From the new album by the mother-daughter folk duo – I Can Still Hear You (2020).

The Last Bridge You Will Cross (For John Lewis) by Buddy & Julie Miller (Genre: Folk, Country, Americana)

From the Americana duo’s aptly named new album Lockdown Songs (2020).

Long Time Gone by Norah Jones & Billie Joe Armstrong (Genre: Rock, Vocal Rock)

From the singing duo’s Everly Brothers tribute album Foreverly (2013).

Moonshine In The Sun by Tracy Silverman with Terry Riley (Genre: New Age, Violin)

From electric violinist Tracy Silverman’s debut album for Windham Hill, Trip To The Sun (1999). The versatile Silverman previously played with the Turtle Island String Quartet before going solo in the late 90’s.

Stand by Me by Ben E. King (Genre: R&B, Vocal, Pop)

The biggest solo hit by the former member of the Drifters. The song was features in the soundtrack to the 1986 Film of the same name – Stand by Me starring River Phoenix, Will Wheaton, Corey Feldman & Jerry O’Connell.

What Can You say by Adrianne Lenker (Genre: Rock, Folk)

From the singer-songwriter’s awesome album Abysskiss (2018).

We Shall Overcome by Kronos Quartet & Friends (Genre: Classical/Folk)

From the group’s new album Long Time Passing: Kronos Quartet and Friends Celebrate Pete Seeger (2020)

Hoopla Pick of the Week

Jewel Box (2020) by Elton John

An in-depth exploration of Elton John & Bernie Taupin’s extensive catalogue, with early rarities and deep cuts personally curated by Elton. The collection spans across 1965-2019. With an extensive amount of previously unheard tracks, this is a treasure trove for fans. This collection features 127 songs and a run time of more than 8 hours!
