Hi everyone, here are our lucky seven musical streaming* suggestions for the week.

(Click on the album cover to stream the album.)

Classic rocker and Doo Wooper Dion celebrates his eightieth birthday next Thursday.

Dion, whose full name is Dion DiMucci, was born in the Bronx on July 18, 1939.

Dion is known for his confident, classic-fifties-cool  style, his singing and the songs he did early in his career both with  Belmonts and as solo artist.

His best known fifties and sixties songs include Teenager In Love, Runaround Sue, Donna the Prima Donna, Lovers Who Wander, The Wanderer and Ruby Baby.

Dion’s bestselling hey-day was during the fifties and sixties. However, he has continued to record and perform great music down the years and we wish him a very Happy 80th Birthday!

To commemorate the occasion of Dion’s 80th birthday, I’m going to recommend two of his albums for your listening pleasure; one from 1969 and one from 1990 and they both show Dion’s rock versatility over the years.

And just a side note about Dion’s classic work from the fifties and early sixties; the Freegal Music catalog consists, primarily of Sony Music artists and Dion’s early work was on non-Sony labels so there isn’t a solid greatest hits collection of Dion’s early work in the Freegal Catalog; that being the case, I will showcase some of his early hits in the video section at the end of this posting.

And without further ado, here are the listening suggestions of the week!

Wonder Where I’m Bound (1969) by Dion (Genre: Classic Rock, Oldies)

Songs in the set include I Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue, 900 Miles, Now and Southern Train.

Fire In The Night (1990) by Dion (Genre: Classic Rock, Oldies)

Songs in the set include Fire In The Night, We Don’t Talk Anymore, Hollywood, Midnight Lover and Street Mama.

Artful Dodger: The Complete Recordings 1975-1977 by Artful Dodger (Genre; Rock, Seventies Rock)

Artful Dodgers was a great and relatively short lived 70’s rock band. The Cleveland group consisted of Billy Paliselli on vocals, Gary Herrewig and Gary Cox on guitars, Steve Cooper on bass and Steve Brigida on drums.

Their music is in the same genre arena as Cheap Trick and Supertramp – in other words – it is great 70s rock!

Songs in the set include Wayside, It’s Over, Follow Me, Silver and Gold and New York City.

Blues Jam Live by Billy Branch and the Sons of the Blues (Genre: Blues)

Billy Branch is a veteran Chicago blues harp player.

This is the only one of his albums available in the Freegal Music catalog, and it features the great harmonic player playing some great songs old and new including  Anybody Seen My Girl (Keb’Mo’), Sweet Home Chicago, Where’s My Money, Mannish Boy and Who Told You.

 –

Bossa Jazz Sessions Vol. 1, 16 Rare Early Brazilian Greats (2016) by Various Artists (Genre: World Music, Jazz, Bossa Nova)

In celebration of the life and work of Bossa Nova great João Gilberto, who died July 6 at the age of 88, I’m going to recommend a Bossa Nova collection. This LP is titled Bossa Jazz Sessions Vol. 1  and it features some cool songs from the early Bossa Nova period.

Songs in the collection include Samba de uma Nota So by Antonio Carlos Jobin & Os Cariocas, Amor por Amor by Luiz Bonfa, Outra Vex by Sergio Mendes and two songs by João Gilberto Chega de Saudade and Samba da Mintra Terra.

Close To Home (2019) by Chuck Mead (Genre: Country):

Close To Home is brand new album by country singer-songwriter and guitarist Chuck Mead. Songs on the LP include Big Bear in the Sky, I’m Not the Man for the Job, Better Than I Was and Daddy Worked the Pole.

Exiled by Choir of King’s College, Aberdeen (Genre: Classical)

About The Choir of King’s College, Aberdeen

“The Choir of King’s College, Aberdeen is made up of 18 choral scholars who sing at weekly services in King’s College Chapel on Wednesdays at 5:15 pm and at other special services, such as the popular Carol Service held each year in St Machar’s Cathedral. They are the successors to the original Vicars Choral appointed by Bishop Elphinstone at the foundation of the University in 1495 to sing the Daily Office.”

About The Exiled LP:

“Internationally acclaimed ensemble, The Rose Consort of Viols, joins the Choir of King’s College, Aberdeen and its director, David J. Smith (harpsichord) in a recording of music by two exiled Catholic English composers, Peter Philips (1560/61–1628) and Richard Dering (c.1580–1630).”

Songs on the album include Hodie in monte in Eight Parts, Paget Galliard, Fantasia No. 1 in Six Parts and Nowils Galliard in Five Parts

Psychedelic Backfire I (2019) by Elephant9 (Genre: Rock, Jazz, Psychedelic, Instrumental):

Elephant9 is an Oslo based group consisting of Stale Storlokken on keyboards, Torstein Lofthus on drums and Nikolai Haengsle on bass. The group plays a rock-jazz-psychedelic fusion style of music that reminds this listener a bit of Yes’s music

Psychedelic Backfire I was recorded in concert and is their brand new release. Songs on the LP include I Cover The Mountain Top, Farmer’s Secret, Habanera Rocket, Actionpack1 and Dodovoodoo
