Suggested Music Apps For Kids, Amazon Kindle Available In India & The World’s Largest Ultra TV

I have to start out by admitting that there was some really cool tech related story that I came across in the last 24 hours and wanted to share that I can’t find. I can’t quite remember what it was about! Those of you who are under a certain age may scratch your heads in wonder at that comment; however, I’m willing to bet that most people over a certain age have had that same experience too and know just what I mean! It is one of those things that is along the same lines as: “Where did I put my car keys?” and/or “Where on earth did I leave my reading glasses?” And if I remember later today what it was that I thought was a cool story I’ll do another blog posting and share it! In the meantime I came across a cool story from the New York Times that discusses music apps for children, several stories that relay the news that Amazon has finally opened a Kindle Store for India and correspondingly is offering its entry level Kindle for sale in India and that the electronics maker LE has just come out with what it describes as the “worlds biggest ultra definition television.”

Suggested Music Apps For Kids: The Times article that suggests several apps for kids is titled The Young Person’s Guide to the (Smartphone) Orchestra. The article mentions several apps that are instructional and fun for kids to use if your goal is for them to learn more about music. The apps include: Garage Band ($4.99), Music Sparkles (ios; Free), Keys Kids Play ($1.00), Go Go Xylo (ios; Free), Meet The Orchestra ($2.00), Kids Musical Challenges (Free) and Kids Piano Lite (Free and a “heavy” version is available for $2.49). The only one of these apps I’ve used myself is Apple’s Garage Band and I’ll admit that it is cool although it probably wouldn’t be the best app for young children to use to learn about music. However, for older kids and adults – Garage Band is great! You can create and record songs by using a variety of keyboards, basses/bass guitars, drums and guitars. The instruments display on the screen and you tap the strings, keys or drum pads to create sound. And you can change the style of your instrument too so if you want an acoustic guitar you can pick that over an electric guitar or you can pick a light bright sounding electric guitar to compose a country type song or a heavier electric guitar with effects if you’re in the mood to create a song that sound something like Steppenwolf. Now granted, I don’t have any kids so I’m not up on the popular musicians that kids like today and Steppenwolf might not be their proverbial cup of tea but they could certainly have a blast using the app to create songs!

Amazon Kindle Available In India: The Amazon Kindle e-reader is now on sale in India for 6,999 INR (about $126 American dollars). And the accompanying Kindle India Store has also opened with more than one million titles all for sale in Indian Rupees (INR). The Kindle Store has also opened with its Kindle Direct Publishing service – that is the service that allows aspiring writers to quickly, easily and cheaply electronically publish their works via the Kindle Store. Thus all self published books in the Kindle Store will appear in the India Kindle store including titles originally self-published from other parts of the globe – so that is exciting as it shows how we can increasingly communicate with other people across the globe – in this case of course new writers will be able to get their works out to an even larger audience than ever before!

One of many articles on the Amazon Kindle and Kindle Store opening in India is from CNET and is simply titled Amazon Launches India Kindle Store and it can be accessed via the following link:

The World’s Largest Ultra TV: Electronics maker LG has just issued what it is calling “The Worlds’ Largest Ultra TV.” It is an 84” Cinema Quality TV that costs a whopping $22, 010! And although the picture quality is supposed to be superb it is not actually the largest TV for sale commercially in the world at the moment; that honor currently goes to Sharp which has a 90” TV for sale.

Can you imagine owning an 84” TV?

I’d have to get a bigger living room!

And of course I haven’t seen one of these TVs myself as I don’t have $22,010 worth of pocket change on hand to buy one! However, I have no doubt that the prices of these TVs will eventually drop as the technology advances and eventually we’ll all have TVs in our living room like the wall size one seen at the end of Corning Inc’s A Day Made of Glass video which makes even an 84” TV look small.

Here’s the link to the BBC article regarding that new 84” LG TV:

You Can Now Read Nook E-Books On A PC Or Mac & YouTube Is A News Source For Many

You Can Now Read Nook E-Books On A PC Or Mac: Today Barnes & Noble released Nook web browser software for its Nook e-books. This means that finally you can read Barnes & Noble Nook e-books via the web browser on your PC or Mac as well as on your Nook or tablet.

Amazon of course has offered Kindle e-book browser access for several years and now Barnes & Noble has jumped on the same bandwagon. And to translate all of that tech talk into our basic common every day tongue – you can now access any Kindle or Barnes & Noble e-book that you have purchased, or will purchase, through the web browser on your PC or Mac. And so if, for example, you’ve previously purchased a non-fiction e-book to read on your e-reader or tablet and you wish to refer to facts contained within it because you are typing up a report and wish to double check a fact– you can download the appropriate software from Amazon or Barnes & Noble and open that e-book up and read it on your computer. It certainly makes it easier to look up facts if your report is being typed up in Word on the same computer!

Here’s a link to a CNET article on that subject titled Nook Chases After Kindle with Browser Based Service:

YouTube Is A News Source For Many: Did you know that many people now check the video site YouTube when a news story breaks? I didn’t either! However, it seems this is a growing trend as people look for videos shot by amateur reporters, professional reporters, and frequently, every day citizens who have simply been in the right place at the right time to video tape a news story on their smart phone and then uploaded it to YouTube.

So the next time a story breaks you may want to search the YouTube site, located at YouTube.com, to find information and videos dealing with breaking news stories.

NPR has a really cool story on this growing trend today it is called

Here’s A Scoop: When News Breaks People Check YouTube For Videos and can be accessed by clicking on the follow link:

Google’s Nexus 7, iPad Mini & How to Upgrade Your PC to Windows 8 Metro

Google’s Nexus 7: Last week Google unveiled a new 7” tablet called the Nexus 7. And this week the critical reviews are in and are mostly positive. The Nexus 7, like Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a 7”, 8 GB tablet*.* Granted, the Kindle Fire allows casual tablet users to read/write e-mail, surf the web and use a few Amazon Kindle apps; but otherwise emphasizes users buying content from Amazon in the form of TV shows, movies, music and e-books to watch, read and listen to respectively on the Kindle Fire.

However, in contrast, The Nexus 7 truly is a tablet – translation – using it will allow you to do much more than what you can do with a Kindle Fire. For $199 you get a 7” Wi-Fi tablet with a very clear screen, Bluetooth capability (“Bluetooth” meaning you can wirelessly connect a keyboard, mouse or other compatible Wi-Fi connecting input device to the tablet), external speakers, a front facing camera for video chats, a battery with nine hour life and a GPS function.  This new tablet has received critical tech acclaim from many corners and pasted below are links to two of those shining critical reviews; the first, titled A Tablet To Rival The Leader, from the noted New York Times tech guru David Pogue, and the second titled “Nexus 7 review: the best $200 tablet you can buy” from Endgadget tech reviewer Tim Stevens:

And here, for a third review that I just found on CNN, titled Nexus 7 best Android Tablet Yet:

iPad Mini Tablet: There have been unconfirmed tech rumors for months that Apple has been working on a smaller iPad than the 9.7” version that is available now. Apple spokesmen have so far refrained from commenting when asked about these rumors; however, today the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Asian component suppliers have said they are preparing to manufacturer glass screens for Apple that are smaller tablet screens.

How to Upgrade to Windows 8 Metro: Windows 8 is slated to be released this fall. And Information Week has produced a nice article, titled Windows 8 Upgrade FAQ: How To Go Metro: Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to get PC users onto its new OS; here’s what you need to know,  that offers you information on how you can upgrade to Windows 8. Essentially, you can upgrade your Windows PC to Windows 8 if your PC meets the upgrade standards (some of which like memory, sound/video card installed etc. vary by computer) and if your computer is currently running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7. And if your current desktop or laptop bites the dust before this fall and you need a new one, you’ll be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 8 for only $14.99.

*You can upgrade to a 16 GB Nexus 7 for an extra $50 — $249 – in contrast Amazon has only one Kindle Fire Model.
