iWorks Apps Available For Free To New Apple Device Owners: iWorks is Apple’s answer to the Microsoft Office Suite. The basic Microsoft Office Suite features Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Apple’s versions of these same styles of software are called “Pages” (Word), “Keynote” (PowerPoint) and “Numbers” (Excel). And right now these three software apps can be purchased individual from the Apple app store for $9.95 each. However, if you buy a new iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch in the future Apple is including these apps for free! And that is great because Microsoft still charges about $100 for the basic standalone Microsoft Office package.

New iPod Touch, New Samsung Chromebook & Newsweek Ends Print Publication

New iPod Touch: The new iPod Touch, the 5th generation model with a larger screen and a Retina Display, has started to ship. And today, Best Buy lists the device as being available to order, Apple lists it as available for pre-order with an expected delivery date of two weeks and Amazon also has it listed as available for pre-order. There has been some speculation with the tech news community that the initial batch of this new iPod may be somewhat small due to glass manufacturers in China struggling to keep up with the demand for display glass – so if you’re interested in buying a new 5th generation iPod Touch for yourself or perhaps as a holiday gift you may want to order one now or wait until January.

New Samsung Chromebook: For those not familiar with Chromebooks they are a rather light weight type of laptop that requires an Internet connection to run and run on Google’s Chrome operating system. The new Samsung Google Chromebook costs just $249, has an 11.6” screen and weighs 2.5 pounds. Now this is a light weight type of laptop – you have to use the Google ecosystem with it so, for example, instead of using Microsoft Word for writing and Microsoft Outlook for email you’d be using Google Docs and Gmail. However, if what you need in your Wi-Fi equipped house is a laptop in the kitchen or upstairs in the den to use to quickly check email, check information found online or bring up a recipe – than this just might be the light weight lap top you need.

Newsweek Ends Print Publication: Newsweek, which has been around as a print publication since the nineteen thirties, will be ending its print publication at the end of this year. The advent of the digital reading age, via e-readers, e-books and web based articles has impacted the bottom line of the weekly news magazine making it untenable and unprofitable for the magazine to continue to offer a print edition. Digital subscriptions will continue to be available.

iOS 6 Released!

Hi everyone, I know I said in yesterdays’ blog posting that I would discuss how you can get free library e-music and e-videos through the STLS Digital Catalog; however, I have been super swamped today and have not gotten a chance to do a thorough job on the subject because I’ve been so busy.

Sorry about that! However, there is some new tech news I can relay in brief and that is the news that Apple has released the iOS 6 software update.

The New York Times tech journalist David Pogue has written a nice overview of the basic changes and new features includes in this Apple software upgrade.

His article is titled New iOS 6 Loses Google Maps, but Adds Other Features and here’s the link:

Have a great evening everyone!

iPhone 5 & New iPod Touch & Nano

And now that today really is Wednesday I can say…Apple introduced the iPhone 5 today and also offered a look at a new iPod Touch and Nano!

The new iPhone 5 is half an inch larger than previous iPhone models with a 4” Retina Display.  The iPhone 5 also features a faster chip, extra microphones, new camera features and a smaller dock connector. The iPhone 5 will be available in black or white and in three sizes: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299 and 64GB for $399. It will go on sale on September 21.

The new iPod Touch will also offer a 4” Retina Display and all the non-cell phone bells and whistles that are included with the iPhone 5. Additionally of note, the new iPod Touch will be available in the following colors:  silver, black, red, yellow or blue. You’ll be able to pre-order the new iPod Touch via Apple’s website starting Thursday, September 14 and you’ll be able to buy a 32GB model for $299 or a 64GB model for $399.

Both the iPhone 5 and the new iPod Touch will feature Apple’s iOS 6 which includes a number of new features like a new maps app, updated Siri functionality and the ability to do video chatting via FaceTime on 3G networks.

Apple has also updated its iPod Nano to offer a 16 GB player with 2.5” touch screen that supports widescreen video and a new home button. The Nano will be available in white, purple, black, blue, green, yellow or pink/red and will, like the iPod Touch, be available for pre-order this Thursday.

And as you might imagine there are tons of news stories online regarding the iPhone 5 and the new iPods and related new features – here are two:

1. A CNET overview of the iPhone 5 found at:

http://www.cnet.com/iphone-5/

2. A Macworld article titled Apple Shows Off iPod Touch Nano Updates that offers more information on the new and improved iPod Touch and iPod Nano found at:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1168525/apple_shows_off_ipod_touch_nano_updates.html

And of course you can get information to straight from the horse’s mouth as it were – via the Apple website found at: http://www.apple.com/

Have a great day!

4” iPod Touch, iPad Mini & DOJ Rejects Apple’s Criticism of E-Book Anti-Trust Suit

4” iPod Touch: According PC Magazine an Asian tech manufacturer has said that Apple will be unveiling not just a new iPhone with a 4” screen in September but also will upgrade the iPod Touch which too shall have a 4” screen.

So those of us who have been waiting to upgrade our iPod Touches can plan on finally doing so this September. Here’s the link to the PG Magazine article tilted Rumor Points to 4-Inch iPod Touch Display:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2407543,00.asp

iPad Mini: CNET is reporting that Apple is indeed getting ready to debut a 7” mini iPad in September. September is the month Apple usually releases iPhone and iPod Touch upgrades so September does seem like a good bet for this new product to be unveiled!

Here’s the link to the CNET article titled iPad Mini to debut in September, says analyst:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57478520-37/ipad-mini-to-debut-in-september-says-analyst/

DOJ Rejects Apple & Publishers Criticism of E-Book Anti-Trust Suit: The U.S. Department of Justice has rejected criticism from Apple and seven of the largest publishers in the U.S. that argues that its E-Book anti-trust suit against Apple and those seven publishers: Random House, HarperCollins, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Macmillan & Pearson, is unfair and benefits the e-book seller Amazon.com. Apple and the seven publishers have argued that prior to 2010 Amazon had a monopoly in e-book sales and they state they did not collude to raise e-book prices via the so-called “Agency Model” of selling books. The DOJ rejects the criticism and counters that Apple and seven of the largest publishers in the U.S. did indeed colluded to raise e-book prices – as just after those eight companies adopted the Agency Model in 2010 e-book prices rose dramatically – seemingly overnight.
