21st Century Monetary Policy: The Federal Reserve from the Great Inflation to Covid-19 by Ben S. Bernanke

(Available Formats: Print Book)

21 Century Monetary Policy

Bernanke, former chair of the Federal Reserve of the U.S., sets out to help readers understand how that institution has arrived at where it is today and what the future may look like. He presents a historical view of monetary policy starting in the twentieth century, when the Federal Reserve was created in 1913. The intention was that it would oversee and stabilize America’s lightly regulated and often-dysfunctional banking system and would be responsible for tasks such as setting short- and long-term interest rates. This time period was wrought with inflation fluctuations and also the impact of President Franklin Roosevelt breaking the link between the dollar and gold and mandating that banks be solvent. As Bernanke moves into the twenty-first century, he tackles topics like the global financial crisis, the great recession, the most current presidential influences, COVID, unemployment rates, and how the future of monetary policy could evolve. In a world where $2.15 trillion is floating in the U.S. economy, readers will be intrigued by the history and predictions Bernanke shares. This impressive and accessible book will appeal to historians and educators as well as those who want to understand America’s finances from a historical perspective. HIGH DEMAND BACKSTORY: With the economy perpetually in the news, expect the media to call on Bernanke’s expert analysis. – Booklist Review

The D-Day Warriors Who Led the Way to Victory in World War II by Alex Kershaw

(Available Formats: Print Book & Large Print)

The First Wave

On the early morning of June 6, 1944, thousands of ships of all types dotted the English Channel as far as the eye could see. Hundreds of landing craft plowed through white-capped waves along 60 miles of French beaches to land their cargo of men and materiel to begin the liberation of Nazi-held Europe. Hours earlier, several divisions of British and American paratroopers dropped from the inky darkness to begin the task of securing bridges and crossroads to hinder German responses and pave the way for the main landing forces heading toward the fortified beaches. Historian Kershaw (Avenue of Spies), basing his work on more than 20 years of extensive interviews and other firsthand accounts from D-Day veterans, deftly weaves these stories to put readers in the midst of the battle. The author captures all the mixed feelings of that day: fear, anticipation, excitement, and the selfless acts of courage and heroism encountered in every corner of the battlefield, here focusing on individual soldiers and their stories.

VERDICT Kershaw’s latest will appeal to readers interested in World War II and firsthand accounts of soldiers and their time in battle. – Library Journal

Innocence of Murder on Steep Street: A Novel by Heda Marloius Kovaly

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Innocense

Originally published in Czech in the 1980s under a pseudonym to protect her family, Kovaly’s novel is finally being released in English. She wrote this story in secret while working on Czech translations of Raymond Chandler and Philip Roth. Kovaly’s acclaimed memoir, Under a Cruel Star, details her time in Auschwitz and the communist purges and show trials in Czechoslovakia following the war. Set in Prague in the 1950s, the book takes place in and around a cinema, the perfect location for a missing-person story that quickly escalates into a murder mystery. The draw here isn’t the mystery of who killed the policeman investigating the first murder–even though everyone had a motive and everyone is hiding something–it is the tense atmosphere in which all are guilty of something and yet punished for a different crime. VERDICT Capturing the fear and oppression of living in a police state, this dark novel, reflective of its time and written by a writer who lived her material, will enthrall noir enthusiasts and readers of literary historical fiction. – Library Journal Review

Haven by Kay Hooper

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Haven

Jessie Rayburn returns to her hometown of Baron Hollow, N.C., to excise the personal ghosts of her adolescence in Hooper’s 13th Special Crimes Unit paranormal investigation (after Blood Ties). She’s a psychic investigator with a “singular lack of imagination,” so she’s not particularly surprised to find some real ghosts. What does come as a surprise is that her sister, Emma, is developing her own latent psychic powers, and the locals are being stalked by a serial killer. Jessie’s fellow Haven employee, Nathan Navarro, is on the killer’s trail, as are a journalist and a group of ghost hunters, but they all act in isolation, increasing their risk and lessening their chances of success. The juxtaposition of the idyllic town and the sadistic sociopath makes the horrors of the crimes stand out, but the basic investigative errors made by just about all of the characters seem to come straight from a schlock horror film with the audience yelling, “Don’t go in there!”

Readers’ Note: If you’d like to binge read, starting with the first book in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series, check out book 1 Stealing Shadows.

The Messy Lives of Book People by Phaedra Patrick

(Available Formats: Print Book, Hoopla instant checkout audiobook)

The Messy Lives of Book People

What if you had the chance to step into your favorite author’s shoes? That’s what happens to Liv–wife, mother, aspiring writer, and house cleaner. When the famous recluse and best-selling author Essie dies unexpectedly, Liv learns that Essie’s final wish was for Liv to finish her manuscript on her behalf, while keeping her death a secret. But to accomplish this, Liv must unravel Essie’s past to find a perfect ending for her characters. Liv quickly discovers that nothing pertaining to Essie is as it seems, while her journey shakes up her marriage and family life and calls into question who gets to do “real” writing. Fans of lively fiction will be instantly drawn into the world Patrick (The Secrets of Love Story Bridge, 2020) creates with her signature charming, breezy style which is further enlivened with nods to popular literature. The elusive Essie is part J. D. Salinger and part J. K. Rowling, the plot pairs The Devil Wears Prada with Weekend at Bernie’s, and Patrick imbues this novel about writing a novel with just the right touch of suspense. – Booklist Review

Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance: A Novel by Alison Espach

(Available Formats: Print Book & downloadable audiobook)

Notes On Your Sudden Disppearance

A young woman addresses her older sister, who died when they were teens, in Espach’s inventive and powerful latest (after The Adults). Sally Holt, now 28, continues to find her life shaped by sister Kathy’s absence, prompting her to recount her life story, here unfolded in second-person narration. As a child, Sally is the subject of family concern because of her shyness, while Kathy, three years older, is comfortable in the spotlight and praised for her beauty. Despite the sisters’ contrasting temperaments, they are each other’s closest confidantes as they grow up in 1990s small-town Connecticut. Of particular interest to them both is high school senior Billy Barnes—a dreamy basketball player and the son of the town florist—who is in the grade above Kathy. After Billy saves 13-year-old Sally from drowning at the public pool, he begins dating Kathy, to Sally’s fascination and envy. A car accident involving all three teenagers permanently shifts the Holt family dynamic (“To sue for reckless driving or not to sue? That was the question,” Sally narrates, describing the tension between her parents over what to do about Billy, who was behind the wheel). In the aftermath, Billy and Sally unite in their shared grief and guilt. Espach captures the minutiae of love and loss with unflinching clarity and profound compassion, and pulls off the second-person point of view unusually well. Readers will be deeply moved. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review

Thank You, Goodnight: A Novel by Andy Abramowitz

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Thank You Goodnight

This very funny, deftly done debut follows Teddy Tremble, once a famous rock star, now a stodgy lawyer. When Teddy comes face-to-face with a less than flattering photo hanging in London’s Tate gallery, labeling him a has-been, he is suddenly overtaken by the old fire to write songs. Then legendary producer Sonny Rivers gives Teddy’s new music the green light, and Teddy decides to get the old band back together. His drummer is a devoted teacher and family man and must be cajoled into giving it one more try; the highly dysfunctional lead guitarist, who is living in his ex-wife’s basement, has been waiting for this moment for years. Meanwhile, the female bassist, Teddy’s long-lost love, who never had much use for the trappings of the rock-star lifestyle, just wants to play music. With a good deal of compassion and a great eye for the comic detail, Abramowitz delves a little deeper here than is typical of a rock ‘n’ roll novel. Teddy struggles to let go of the ambition and self-aggrandizement that led to the band’s implosion, and his rebirth is a pleasure to behold. – Booklist Review

Victoria by Daisy Goodwin

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Victoria

Drawing on Queen Victoria’s diaries, which she first started reading when she was a student at Cambridge University, Daisy Goodwin—creator and writer of the new PBS Masterpiece drama Victoria and author of the bestselling novels The American Heiress and The Fortune Hunter—brings the young nineteenth-century monarch, who would go on to reign for 63 years, richly to life in this magnificent novel.

Early one morning, less than a month after her eighteenth birthday, Alexandrina Victoria is roused from bed with the news that her uncle William IV has died and she is now Queen of England. The men who run the country have doubts about whether this sheltered young woman, who stands less than five feet tall, can rule the greatest nation in the world.

Despite her age, however, the young queen is no puppet. She has very definite ideas about the kind of queen she wants to be, and the first thing is to choose her name.

“I do not like the name Alexandrina,” she proclaims. “From now on I wish to be known only by my second name, Victoria.”

Next, people say she must choose a husband. Everyone keeps telling her she’s destined to marry her first cousin, Prince Albert, but Victoria found him dull and priggish when they met three years ago. She is quite happy being queen with the help of her prime minister, Lord Melbourne, who may be old enough to be her father but is the first person to take her seriously.

On June 19th, 1837, she was a teenager. On June 20th, 1837, she was a queen. Daisy Goodwin’s impeccably researched and vividly imagined new book brings readers Queen Victoria as they have never seen her before.

When Women Were Dragons: A Novel by Kelly Barnhill

(Available Formats: Print Book)

When Women Were Dragons

Newbery winner Barnhill (The Girl Who Drank the Moon) makes her adult debut with a deeply felt exploration of feminism in an alternate fantastical history. Alex Green was a child in Wisconsin in 1955 when over 600,000 American women spontaneously turned into dragons, including her beloved Aunt Marla, and flew away. Alex’s mother brings Marla’s daughter Beatrice to live with them and, like the rest of American society, refuses to even discuss dragons. Alex grows up adoring her younger cousin, and their close friendship assuages the stress she feels from her mother’s pressure to succeed at school, as well as from her chauvinist father. After Alex’s mother dies of cancer, her father moves the girls into a tiny apartment where he offers meager financial support and forbids Alex from shopping at the grocery store, afraid people will think he can’t provide for them. Determined to get to college, Alex plows through high school with the help of a librarian; she also cautions Beatrice over her “dangerous” attraction to images of angry dragons. Meanwhile, flyers promising the truth about the “Great Dragoning” begin to appear around town, and scientists try to determine the cause of the women’s metamorphosis. Barnhill makes palpable Alex’s sense of loss as well as the strictures of mid-century American life. This allegory packs a punch. – Publishers Weekly Review

You Have a Friend in 10A: Stories by Maggie Shipstead:

(Available Formats: Print Book)

You Have A Friend In 10 A

From the Booker Prize nominee and New York Times best-selling author of Great Circle, a piercing, irresistible first collection of short stories exquisite in their craft and audacious in their range
A love triangle plays out over decades on a Montana dude ranch. A hurdler and a gymnast spend a single night together in the Olympic village. Mistakes and mysteries weave an intangible web around an old man’s deathbed in Paris, connecting disparate destinies. On the slopes of an unfinished ski resort, a young woman searches for her vanished lover. A couple’s Romanian honeymoon goes ominously awry, and, in the mesmerizing title story, a former child actress breaks with her life in a Hollywood cult.

In these and other stories, knockout after knockout, Maggie Shipstead delivers another “extraordinary” (New York Times) work of fiction and seals her reputation as a writer of “breathtaking range and skill” (Kirkus Reviews). Rich in imagination and dazzling in its shapeshifting style, You Have a Friend in 10A excavates the complexities of love, sex, and life in ways unsparing and hilarious, sharp-eyed and tender.

Have a great week!

The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The Cherry Robbers

The delightfully eerie latest from Walker follows a woman who reinvents herself after a painful childhood. The story begins with Sylvia Wren, a famous artist in her 80s, living in present-day Abiquiu, N.Mex., while her partner, Lola, is away in Brazil. Sylvia receives a letter from a journalist with questions about her past that threaten to reveal her true identity as Iris Chapel. Walker then flashes back to 1950s Connecticut, where Iris grows up with her five older sisters and a mother who has a habit of staring off into the woods and dropping her china before declaring she feels “something terrible” will happen. Their father, who isn’t around much, runs Chapel Firearms, and the women believe their house is haunted by those who were killed by the guns manufactured by the company. Walker does a great job weaving this thread of gothic mystery with revelations about the woman Iris becomes, a “haunted mother, haunted daughter.” A mix of bildungsroman and ghost story, the narrative gains strength as it illuminates its characters’ power of intuition, especially when they’re not afraid to use it. This uncanny tale of dark origins shines brightly. – Publishers Weekly Review

The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at His Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened by Bill McKibben

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The Flag The Cross And the Station Wagon

In 1970, when long-time climate activist and rock-steady writer McKibben was 10, his family moved to Lexington, Massachusetts, a town key to the American Revolution and a bastion of white suburban security, prosperity, and conformity. As a teen, McKibben worked as a guide to Lexington’s historical sites; now he investigates the contrast between what he was taught then and the long-obfuscated truth about enslaved people in New England and the “genocidal destruction” of the continent’s Indigenous nations. This leads to a clarifying discussion of why racism is systemic in American society and what remedies can be pursued. McKibben also tracks the decline of the authority of mainstream Christianity and the intensification of deleterious “hyper-individualism” and materialism which spurred the carbon-burning supersizing of suburban homes and vehicles and the reduction of support for urgently needed public urban institutions. A wild tale about President Carter’s White House solar panels leads to an examination of the unholy influence of corporations on Congress and the overt politicization of the courts. Adept at factual storytelling and connecting the dots, earnest, caring, and funny, McKibben dovetails personal reckonings with an astute elucidation of our social justice and environmental crises, arguing wisely that facing the truth about our past is the only way forward to a more just and sustainable future. – Booklist Review

Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Ghost Walkers

In this entrancing alternate history, Kowal (the Glamourist Histories series) introduces the Spirit Corps, a group that communicates with recently killed soldiers to gather important wartime information. It’s the summer of 1916, and American medium Ginger Stuyvesant works with the British Army at Le Havre to coordinate and lead spirit circles. When her intelligence officer fiancé, Capt. Benjamin Harford, uncovers a German plot to target the Spirit Corps and is sent to the front soon after, Ginger must use every power at her disposal to track down a traitor and protect the corps. Kowal’s depiction of spiritualism is richly imagined, and its complications and consequences are thoughtfully considered. Her depiction of the Western Front includes diverse characters often neglected in wartime stories: the many people who help Ginger include women young and old, people of color, and disabled veterans, all of whom are dismissed by the British men in charge. The well-drawn characters and the story’s gripping action and deep emotion will captivate readers. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review

The Road To Unfreedom: Europe, Russia and America by Timothy Snyder

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The Road To Unfreedom

Yale history professor Snyder (On Tyranny) buttresses his denunciation of Donald Trump as a nascent authoritarian with a fascinating, detailed exploration of how recent events in Russia presaged Trump’s administration. Beginning by discussing the obscure early-20th-century Russian philosopher Ivan Ilyin, who regarded “fascism as the politics of the world to come,” Snyder traces Ilyin’s influence on Vladimir Putin’s aggressive efforts to return his country to superpower status. Those included the 2014 invasion of Ukraine, which Snyder considers “the warning that went unheeded” of Russia’s willingness to interfere with other countries’ political systems, as later seen during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. He relates Ilyin’s belief that strong rulers favor self-serving myths over empirical evidence to numerous examples of the Putin regime’s propaganda. In perhaps its most audacious PR coup, Russia’s downing of a Malaysia Airlines flight over Ukraine was spun so successfully that well over 80% of Russians believed their country wasn’t to blame. This instance of “alternative facts” will resonate with many Trump opponents, as will Snyder’s dissection of the leadership style of oligarchs, both Russian and American. His work achieves its stated goal of conveying the relationship among “interconnected events in our own contemporary world history” and will be a must-read for those concerned about democracy’s safety in the 21st century.

The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The Stardust Thief

DEBUT American Kuwaiti Abdullah unfolds a tale built from the threads of One Thousand and One Nights, an adventure quest, focused on four travelers. The Midnight Merchant, with the aid of her jinn bodyguard, sells relics filled with magic. Prince Mazen bin Malik is trapped in a life he does not want. Aisha bint Louas is one of the fabled Forty Thieves. They seek the jinn in the lamp. To find them, they must step into the endless, ever-shifting sands of the desert, a shimming substance that hides wonder and terror–ghouls and bandits, gardens born of silver blood, and deadly traps made by man and jinn alike. Abdullah transports readers into this rich world and literary heritage by crafting characters with deep backstories; maintaining an engrossing pace; and, most impressively, layering details into the story so deftly that the veil between magic and reality slips and bends delightfully.

VERDICT An impressive first in an expected trilogy, one that hits high notes of several popular themes and trends (found families, classics retold), but offers fresh perspectives as well. It will delight readers who appreciate highly atmospheric books. Share widely, not just with fantasy readers. Starred Library Journal Review

Strange Highways by Dean Koontz

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Strange Highways

An extraordinary collection of short fiction, including the title novel, nine novellas, and six stories, explores the intriguing, vast variety of human experiences–failures, triumphs, adventures, terrors, joys, and more–that occur along the path from birth to death.

Here is a description of the fascinating title story: Joey Shannon, an alcoholic whose life has been going nowhere for 20 years, returns to his hometown for the funeral of his father. As he leaves town, he gets a mysterious second chance to relive the night in 1975 when his life began its downward spiral: to both literally and figuratively take the road that he didn’t originally take. On this road he is supremely tested by conflict with his successful and charismatic older brother P.J., by conflict between his cynicism and his lost faith, and by conflict between the ultimate good and evil.

Tall Men, Short Shorts: The 1969 NBA Finals: Wilt, Russ, Lakers, Celtics, and a Very Young Sports Reporter by Leigh Montville

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Tall Men Short Shorts

Sportswriter Montville (Sting Like a Bee) masterfully combines memoir and sports history in this thrilling deep dive into a legendary NBA championship battle. As a 24-year-old novice reporter for the Boston Globe in 1969, he had a first-row seat to an epic duel that went the full seven games and pitted Bill Russell’s Boston Celtics against Wilt Chamberlain’s Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics, Montville writes, were “at the end of their dominance”—they’d finished fourth in their division, and their leader, Russell, was playing his final year. The Lakers, meanwhile, had just brought on Chamberlain, who many considered the “most stupendous” player in the league. Historically, the Lakers had routinely been bested by the Celtics, but the L.A. team’s two games to none lead at the outset of the Finals gave them the upper hand. Instead, Boston won by two points in the seventh game, with Chamberlain injured on the bench in the final, crucial minutes. Montville recounts his race against “the tightest of deadlines” to file game reports—including the first game’s “53 beautiful backcourt points” scored by Jerry West—that he hoped would catapult his career. In vividly evoking the ups and downs that led to this monumental match-up, Montville paints a humanizing portrait of the game. This is another success for a gifted writer. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review

Transcription by Kate Atkinson

(Available Formats: Print Book, CD audiobook & eBook)

Transcription

Is it ever possible to transcend the choices of the past? In this superb new novel from Atkinson it’s 1940 when Juliet Armstrong is recruited into the British intelligence service, MI5. She supports an operation by transcribing recorded meetings between a British agent, posing as a member of the Gestapo, and British Nazi sympathizers. At 19 and somewhat naive but with considerable wit and intelligence, she is soon entangled in espionage, undertaking an active role in the operation and bringing several traitors to justice. When the war ends, Juliet leaves MI5 for the BBC, first in Manchester, and then in London, where she produces programs for the emerging schools educational service in 1950. As Juliet’s life tantalizingly unfolds, it becomes apparent that she has made some very provocative choices during the war, and that absolutely nothing is as it seems.

VERDICT With a fascinating cast of characters, careful plotting, and lyrical language in turns comical and tragic, Atkinson’s complex story carefully unveils the outer demands and inner conflicts that war inflicts on people. A delight for fans of A.S. Byatt and Ian McEwan – Starred Library Journal Review

Treeborne by Caleb Johnson

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant checkout audiobook)

Treeborne

Using language rich as mulch, debut author Johnson tells the superb saga of three generations of Treebornes, who live near the town of Elberta in the southern reaches of Georgia. Janie Treeborne narrates much of the story, tripping through time beginning with the days of her grandaddy Hugh, forced by circumstance to join the Authority, behemoth builder of a modern dam. So as not to forget how things once were, Hugh becomes a maker of a strange art he calls “assemblies,” figures made of mud, spiders’ webs, and gears. His wife is Janie’s beloved MawMaw, the postmaster Maybelle; she is in love with Lee Malone, the “man with the blue arms” who sings like an angel and tends orchards as old as the conquistador Hernando DeSoto.

When Janie’s aunt and uncle threaten to sell off and clear the ancient forest once home to her beloved grandparents, Janie and her friends kidnap her aunt to try to stop them, and she goes on the lam in the company of a magical doll made of dirt. Johnson’s pervasive use of the colloquial, even when narrating, never gets irritating. Metaphors abound, and it isn’t a coincidence the Treebornes’ town shares a person’s name; the whole place is as alive as if it walked on two feet. Sentence by loamy sentence, this gifted author digs up corpses and upends trees to create a place laden with magic and memory. Starred Publishers Weekly Review

When She Dreams by Amanda Quick

(Available Formats: Print Book & eBook)

When She Dreams

When it comes to hiring a private investigator in Adelina Beach, Maggie Lodge is not exactly awash in choices. Still, while Sam Sage might be a divorced, disgraced ex-cop, at least he isn’t drunk at nine o’clock in the morning. After hiring Sam to find out who is blackmailing her current employer, syndicated advice columnist Aunt Cornelia, Maggie insists on taking an active role in the investigation. The blackmailer’s trail soon takes the new “partners” to the Guilfoyle Institute of Dream Analysis in Burning Cove, California, where they discover a charismatic con man, his cool-as-a-cucumber wife-manager, a mad scientist obsessed with lucid dreaming, and a dead body.

Quick (one of Jayne Ann Krentz’s literary alter egos) deftly tips her fedora to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler in the latest superbly entertaining addition to her 1930s-set Burning Cove books. With its perfectly executed plot, snappy dialogue, and generous dash of dry wit, this is proof positive of why Quick’s novels continue to be the platinum standard for stylish American historical romance kissed with a hint of sophisticated suspense and a dash of the supernatural. – Booklist Review

After The Summer Rain by Gerri Hill

(Available Formats: Print Book)

After The Summer Rain

Workaholic Erin Ryder was on the fast track to self-destruction. Reeling after her lover walked out on her, she turned to booze and caffeine to make it through each day. After a family intervention, she finds herself on a remote ranch in New Mexico—on womyn’s land—to detox and heal. No cell service, no Internet—she’s convinced she won’t last three days, much less for the three-month sentence her father has mandated.

Running from the chaos that had become her life, Melanie West moved to Eagle Bluff Ranch seven years ago.

By far the youngest there, she embraced the compassionate, peaceful life that the elders espoused. Living off what her garden produced, her chickens and goats became her friends and confidants. Exposure to the outside world was limited to the handful of guests who stayed a few days at the ranch each year.

This summer would be different. Melanie found herself hosting a young woman for three months. A young woman who wanted to be anywhere but there. As the days and weeks passed, their animosity turned to friendship as they helped the other heal from their past failures.

Erin soon found herself loving life on Mel’s little farm. Loving life and loving Mel. Saying goodbye would be the hardest thing she had to do—saying goodbye to Mel… or saying goodbye to her previous life.

Anniversaries: From a Year in the Life of Gesine Cresspahl by Uwe Johnson, translated by Damion Searls

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Anniversaries

In this sprawling multivolume novel, the events of one woman’s life over the course of a year in New York hearken back to several decades’ worth of German history and political upheaval. Gesine Cresspahl is a German woman in her mid-30s who lives with her daughter in New York and works for a bank.

Johnson’s novel opens in the late summer of 1967, and proceeds through the following year day by day, with all of the political turmoil that that entails—both in the United States and behind the Iron Curtain. Interspersed with this are occasional meditations on the New York Times and, more prominently, the story of Gesine’s family over the course of her early life. In this way, Johnson covers the rise of fascism in Germany, the wartime experience there, and the separation of the nation into East and West.

The novel’s 1967 segments occasionally trace the aftereffects of fascism and sometimes parallel the tumultuous American politics of the moment, including the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Johnson keeps the line between past and present murky, which seems in keeping with his larger points about the nature of history as it’s remembered versus history as it’s lived. The growing political consciousness of Gesine’s daughter, Marie, provides a wonderful counterpoint to the novel’s themes of crises personal, national, and global. This is a haunting and unforgettable portrait of the momentous and the historical. Starred Publishers Weekly Review

Blood of the Four by Christopher Golden & Tim Lebbon

(Available Formats: Print Book, Hoopla instant checkout eBook & audiobook)

Blood of the Four

This hefty sword-and-sorcery adventure from frequent collaborators Golden and Lebbon leaves room to bring its large, entangled cast of characters to a wider stage. At the beginning, the kingdom of Quandis is at peace. The study of magic has been left to the priesthood and largely ignored. Cunning and ruthless Princess Phela sees the awful effects of her mother’s addiction to magical lore, but once Phela becomes queen, she can’t resist the temptation of supernatural power. Meanwhile, Demos, the studly betrothed of Phela’s younger sister, is sold into slavery after his father is executed for blasphemy; Blane, a young member of the Bajuman caste (hereditarily lower than any slave) who doesn’t believe in the gods, stealthily trains as a priest but unwillingly begins to suspect that the gods and their magic are real; and Blane’s supposedly dead sister, Daria, becomes a swashbuckling admiral in the Quandian fleet. There’s something for everyone here, including some subtly feminist themes and several spectacular displays of magical conflict. This novel is an expert crowd-pleaser. Publishers Weekly Review

Clash of Empires by Ben Kane

(Available Formats: Print Book)

Clash of Empires

The great general Hannibal Barca is on the verge of defeat. As the ambitious senator Flamininus plots his path to power, he knows victory will crown Rome the most powerful in the world. Only unconquered Greece stands in the way of glory. King Philip V of Macedon’s mighty phalanx is an enemy Rome has long feared, and one that has never known defeat. Demetrios has dreamed of fighting with the phalanx his whole life, but the young villager will soon learn that, in a clash of empires, you’re only ever one swing of the sword away from death–or entering legend.

Confessions in B-Flat by Donna Hill

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant checkout audiobook)

Confessions In B Flat

Hill spins a powerful romance between passionate young activists during the American Civil Rights Movement. After marching on Washington, D.C., Atlanta native Jason Tanner, a committed advocate of nonviolence, is tapped to open Martin Luther King Jr.’s Harlem field office. On the bus to New York, he meets Anita Hopkins, a Brooklyn-born firebrand who firmly believes in Malcolm X’s message to demand equal treatment using any means necessary. Opposites attract and the pair quickly fall in love—but can they make their relationship last amid the turbulent times and despite their differing ideologies? Hill doesn’t hold back from discussing the atrocities perpetuated on African Americans or the risks her courageous characters take in advocating for their rights. Historical photos, famous speeches, and news articles from the day punctuate the narrative, and Hill skillfully weaves in real heroes of the movement, including the late John Lewis, to whom the book is dedicated. Meticulous research, achingly real characters, and convincing romance power this enthralling tale, which ultimately lands on a message of love and compromise. This is a knockout. The House at Bishopsgate: A Novel by Katie Hickman

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The House at Bishop's Gate

In 1611, married couple Celia and Paul Pindar return to London from Aleppo, Syria, where Celia had been kidnapped and forced into the Great Turk’s harem. Weakened by her experience and with her marriage strained, Celia relies increasingly upon their beguiling companion, widow Frances Sydenham. Celia’s old friend Annetta arrives at the house at Bishopsgate to find the couple under Frances’s sway, and all of London clamoring to see the mysterious diamond Celia and Paul brought back from Syria: the Sultan’s Blue. The jewel is highly sought despite the dark properties it is rumored to possess. Nothing is quite what it seems, and secrets abound. VERDICT Transporting readers back to 17th-century England, this exceptionally engaging third entry in Hickman’s “Aviary Gate” series (The Aviary Gate; The Pindar Diamond) can be read and enjoyed on its own. Historical fiction fans and readers looking for a riveting tale with an aura of mystery will be enthralled. – Library Journal Review

Nobody Walks by Mick Herron

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant checkout audiobook)

Nobody Walks

Herron’s remarkable novel has enough suspense, action, and deductive dazzle to keep genre fans happy. But be warned: these are deep waters, and this is not nodding-off, night-table reading. Tom Bettany, a British ex-spy crammed with dark skills, comes out of retirement when he learns his estranged son is dead. An examination of the death scene convinces him it was murder, and indelible moments follow as this gaunt, haunted man walks about London with his boy’s ashes, seeking anyone who knew him. Then the higher reptiles from the service emerge and Tom (along with the reader) wonders: Is all this a ploy to bring him back to killing? Not killing enemies of the state, mind you, but people who won’t do what the reptiles want. Will Tom catch on, and will it make any difference? There’s no pat ending, and the story is told in a clipped style that occasionally throws the rhythm off but can deliver knockouts, too. When the final revelation comes, it’s like a physical blow. Could it be that public servants serve only themselves? – Starred Booklist Review

The Swallows of Kabul by Yasmina Khadra

(Available Formats: Print Book)

The Swallows of Kabul

Khadra is the nom de plume for Algerian army officer Mohamed Moulessehoul, who illustrates the effects of repression on a pair of Kabul couples in this slim, harrowing novel of life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Gloomy prison guard Atiq Shaukat is tired of his grim duties, keeping watch over prisoners slated for public execution. Life at home, where his wife, Musarrat, is slowly dying of a chronic illness, is no better. Mohsen Ramat, meanwhile, clings to the remains of his middle-class life together with his beautiful, progressive wife, Zunaira, after the Taliban strip them of their livelihood and dignity. Khadra’s storytelling style recalls that of Naguib Mahfouz in the early chapters, in which the tense dissatisfaction of both couples is revealed. The pivotal event occurs when Ramat discharges his frustrations by participating in the brutal stoning of a female Taliban prisoner. The incident changes the dynamic of his marriage; after an extended argument about the incident, Ramat persuades Zunaira to go for a stroll in downtown Kabul and the couple is harassed and nearly brutalized by Taliban soldiers. Zunaira continues to bridle at her situation, and when their next argument turns physical, Ramat falls and dies after hitting his head on the wall. Shaukat is given the assignment of guarding Zunaira after she is arrested and charged with murder, and his instant infatuation with her sets off a remarkable chain of events. Khadra’s simple, elegant prose, finely drawn characters and chilling insights (“Kabul has become the antechamber to the great beyond”) prepare the way for the terrible climax. Like Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, this is a superb meditation on the fate of the Afghan people. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review

Wicked Wonders by Ellen Klages

(Available Formats: Print Book & Hoopla instant checkout eBook)

Wicked Wonders

Magical stories unfurl with marvelous subtlety in this delightful collection from Klages (The Green Glass Sea). Some are set in a variant of our own world, including “The Education of a Witch,” which builds a small girl’s fondness for Maleficent up to an ominous climax. Others transport readers elsewhere: “Friday Night at St. Cecilia’s” takes place inside several board games, where the player is at a fairy queen’s mercy. In “Amicae Eternum,” a young girl tries to absorb memories of Earth as she prepares to leave with her parents on a colony ship, and the astronaut in “Goodnight Moons” is already on Mars before she learns that her unexpected baby means she’s never going back home; both tales focus on the quiet moments and joy in life. The last two stories of the collection, “Woodsmoke” and “The Scary Ham,” are slices of life, not speculative at all. Queer characters appear often, warmly included without any fuss. The emotional impact of the stories is carefully managed in a way that’s meant to sweep readers up, not knock them down. The tie that binds these works together is humanity, lovingly and quietly explored no matter the genre. – Starred Publishers Weekly Review
