Beach House Rules by Kristy Woodson Harvey
Charlotte Sitterly and her daughter Iris’ lives are flipped upside down when Bill, Charlotte’s husband, is arrested for embezzlement. With her assets frozen and no home to go to, she takes acquaintance Alice up on her offer to stay with her. Alice’s North Carolina beachside home is known in the community as the “”mommune”” and houses Alice’s niece, journalist Julie, and her three children, and Grace, an internet-famous vegan chef, and her two children. Though Charlotte and Iris are hesitant at first, they soon come to feel that these once strangers are family. But all is not rosy: everyone’s business is fair game to the town’s vicious, anonymous Instagram account, and Alice, a three-time widow, feels like she must steer clear of love. Still, while each woman is facing her own battles, they are all thriving within their support system, which is sorely needed when it becomes apparent that Bill has been framed by a man from Alice’s past. Woodson Harvey’s latest (after A Happier Life, 2024) is full of well-thought-out characters and a plot that keeps readers guessing. Charming and beachy in the best way, Beach House Rules will appeal to those looking for an escape with emotional depth. – Starred Booklist Review

Daughters of George III: Sisters and Princesses by Catherine Curzon
In 1761, King George III married 17-year-old Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; they went on to have 15 children, 13 of whom lived to adulthood. A great deal has been written about the sons, including Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, father of Queen Victoria. Historian Curzon (The Elder Sons of George III) focuses on the six princesses: Charlotte, Princess Royal; Augusta Sophia; Elizabeth; Mary; Sophia; and Amelia. Each daughter is profiled in a separate chapter that also provides insights on how they were impacted by their father’s mental and physical illness. Augusta Sophia had a long-term relationship and (possible secret marriage) to Sir Brent Spencer and Elizabeth married later in life to Frederick VI, Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg. Charlotte married Frederick I of Wurttemberg. Mary married her cousin Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. Perhaps the most intriguing is Sophia, rumored to have an illegitimate child with Gen. Thomas Garth, 33 years her senior. Amelia, her father’s favorite, died young from tuberculosis, unable to attain permission to marry Charles FitzRoy, a descendant of Charles II. Extensive bibliographical notes add value.
VERDICT This fascinating look at the lives and times of the six daughters of George III and Queen Charlotte delivers an engaging read for enthusiasts of the royals and British history. –Library Journal Review

Mansion Beach by Meg Mitchell Moore
Nicola Carr has left her boyfriend and lawyer job and is starting over as the oldest intern at the Block Island Maritime Institute off of Rhode Island. Despite her humble midwestern roots, Nicola is surrounded by the wealthy–Taylor, her beloved cousin David’s wife; Jack, an injured pro golfer and David and Taylor’s frequent house guest; and Juliana George, Nicola’s next-door-neighbor, who starts the summer as a nuisance because of her loud, lavish parties. Juliana’s life started out much differently than that of her rich counterparts, as is revealed in sections from her perspective. But if the IPO for her online fashion portal is to go off without a hitch, her past, including a connection with David, must stay hidden. The reader knows from the beginning of the novel that someone has died, but it’s not revealed who until the heartbreaking end of the book. Moore (Summer Stage, 2023) combines Elin Hilderbrand’s knack for details with a slightly more cynical point of view, presenting the careless cruelty of the ultrarich in a compelling, beachy tale. — Booklist Review

Summerhouse by Yigit Karaahmet
Fehmi and Şener have created a lovely life together, or as much as two gay men living on the Turkish island of Buyukada can. Together for 40 years, they are used to the delicate dance required to be accepted by their neighbors, but Fehmi is growing bored with their predictable life. An awakening occurs when a couple from Istanbul arrives for the summer with their handsome and troubled son, Deniz, in tow. The more Deniz plays games with Fehmi, the more Şener feels threatened, eventually pushing him to the brink. The result is a thriller reminiscent of The Talented Mr. Ripley, complete with antiheroes who manage to be a combination of empathetic, charming, and abhorrent. The idyllic setting of Buyukada creates a cinematic atmosphere, and Turkish author Karaahmet effectively captures the capricious nature of the island’s high-society inhabitants. Though the buildup is slowly paced and the ending somewhat rushed, this darkly funny tale will be devilishly entertaining for fans of the genre and complex characters. –Booklist Review

Amelia Bloomer: Journalist, Suffragist, Anti-Fashion Icon by Sara Catterall
When studying the history of women’s suffrage in the United States, names like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott come readily to mind, but this biography of Amelia Bloomer demonstrates her essential role and legacy in propelling the movement forward from its earliest days until she died in 1894. Despite receiving little formal education, Bloomer excelled in her role as the founder and editor of The Lily, an influential newspaper by and for women, that she ran from 1849-53. The Lily helped spread the word and garner support for women’s rights across the growing country. While Bloomer’s foray into activism was first and foremost as a temperance advocate, she was a respected leader and lecturer promoting women’s rights and dress reform. (While she did not “invent” bloomers, she did defend women wearing them in the pages of The Lily). Catterall, a former academic librarian, has written a timely and exhaustively researched and fully dimensional biography, observing that “it is also worth understanding how long many of our political debates have gone on . . . to understand what true progress could look like now.” Sage words that resonate, given our current political landscape. – Starred Booklist Review

The Busybody Book Club by Freya Sampson

Jarrod’s savvy friend Kitty Reynolds, who encouraged him to pursue writing and directing–and who happens to be a former first lady of the United States–wants to set him up with her new Secret Service bodyguard, the exceptionally attractive Jim Stratton. Liv’s currently dating Zel Cameron, a documentary film student who urges her to find and meet her surrogate mother. Meanwhile, Liv’s best friend, Maude, develops romantic feelings for Zel’s charming assistant. Liv grows more concerned about the financial motives behind Zel’s actions when he reveals that he’s located the surrogate, Candy Lithwick. Candy is agreeable enough, but one of her two children harbors suspicions that Liv wants her mother’s property, and the other needs Jarrod’s assistance in promoting his career. Charlie’s brother Brody, a semifamous professional wrestler, arrives seeking refuge in Jarrod’s casita. When Zel fails to show up for a dinner where he was supposed to meet Jarrod, an annoyed Liv visits his studio and discovers his lifeless body. Unsatisfied with the police investigation, Jarrod, who’s dabbled in detection, embarks with Brody and Liv on his own investigation and learns that Zel’s habit of plagiarism made him widely disliked at school. An often humorous mystery replete with questionable decisions, fortunate coincidences, and opportunities for redemption. –Kirkus Review

Never Flinch by Stephen King
King’s follow-up to Holly has PI Holly Gibney helping to guard Kate, an outspoken feminist activist who has been receiving messages from an increasingly aggressive stalker. At the same time, Holly’s friend, Buckeye City Police Detective Izzy Jaynes, is assigned a case that involves a threat to kill 13 innocents and one guilty person. At first, Izzy isn’t sure the threat is real, but their doubt disappears after the first murder, with possibly 13 more to come. Izzy has an idea of the “why” of the murders, but hasn’t a clue as to who, so she asks Holly to take a look at the evidence. As Izzy investigates and Holly gets pulled further into Kate’s orbit, their cases converge, forcing them to work together to prevent a larger disaster. Holly’s progression (from supporting character to a protagonist worth rooting for) continues. She’s taking on new challenges and finding support in new relationships, a development that gives heart to King’s novel. While the horror elements are not as prominent here as in other series installments, there is real suspense in the dual narratives and the actions of an increasingly off-kilter villain.
VERDICT Fans of Holly Gibney and/or detective procedurals will find a lot to love here. — Library Journal Review

Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami
A woman is detained under an American regime where even dreams are being surveilled. Lalami’s stellar fifth novel concerns Sara Hussein, a Moroccan American woman who’s returning home from a conference in London to her family in L.A. when she’s held by the Risk Assessment Administration, a federal agency that uses biometric data to assess citizens’ “pre-crime” tendencies. She’s done nothing troubling, but her “risk score” is high enough to force a stay at an all-woman “retention center” that’s effectively a prison. Though her stay is supposed to be brief, the smallest hiccups lead to extensions, and the private-prison firm contracted by RAA charges extortionate rates for everything from emails to clean sheets; Sara and the other retainees are also expected to work to lower their scores, labor that partly involves feeding AI models. There are echoes ofThe Handmaid’s Tale here–as Margaret Atwood does in that book, Lalami builds a convincing near-future dystopia out of current events, and Sara plots a similar small-scale resistance. But Lalami’s scenario is unique and well-imagined–interspersed report sheets, transcripts, and terms-of-service lingo have a realistic, poignant lyricism that exposes the cruel bureaucracy in which Sara is trapped. (Not for nothing does she have a Borges book checked out of the library.) And the story exposes the particular perniciousness of big tech’s capacity to exploit our every movement, indeed practically every thought. It’s a fiction-workshop cliche that dreams are unnecessary, but here they play a crucial role in the plot, opening up questions of what we’re sacrificing in the name of convenience and safety. The novel’s striking message is summarized in Sara’s retort to a bureaucrat who tells her the data doesn’t lie: “It doesn’t tell the truth, either.” An engrossing and troubling dystopian tale. – Starred Kirkus Review

Fever Beach by Carl Hiaasen
Another instant classic from Carl Hiaasen—laugh-out-loud funny, tackling the current chaotic and polarized American culture (following in the path of Squeeze Me), with two wonderful Hiaasen heroes
“The afternoon of September first, dishwater-gray and rainy, a man named Dale Figgo picked up a hitchhiker on Gus Grissom Boulevard in Tangelo Shores, Florida. The hitchhiker, who reminded Figgo of Danny DeVito, asked for a lift to the interstate. Figgo said he’d take him there after finishing an errand.”
Thus begins Fever Beach, with an errand that leads—in pure Hiaasen-style—into the depths of Florida at its most Floridian: a sun-soaked bastion of right-wing extremism, white power, greed, and corruption. Figgo, it turns out, is the only hate-monger ever to be kicked out of the Proud Boys for being too dumb and incompetent. On January 6, 2021 he thought he was defacing a statue of Ulysses S. Grant, but he wound up spreading feces all over a statue of James Zacharia George, a Civil War Confederate war leader.
Figgo’s already messy life is about to get more complicated, thanks to two formidable adversaries. Viva Morales is a newly transplanted Floridian, a clever woman recently taken to the cleaners by her ex-husband, now working at the Mink Foundation, a supposedly philanthropic organization, and renting a room in Figgo’s apartment because there’s no place else she can afford. Twilly Spree has an anger management problem, especially when it comes to those who deface the environment, and way too many inherited millions of dollars. He’s living alone a year after his dog died, two years after he sank a city councilman’s party barge, and three years after his divorce.
Viva and Twilly are plunged into a mystery—involving dark money and darker motives—they are determined to solve, and become entangled in a world populated by some of Hiaasen’s most outrageous characters: Claude and Electra Mink—billionaire philanthropists with way too much plastic surgery and a secret right-wing agenda—and Congressman Clure Boyette—who dreams of being Florida’s (and maybe America’s) most important politician. The only things standing in his way are his love for hookers and young girls, and his total lack of intelligence. We meet Noel Kristianson—a Scandinavian agnostic injured when Figgo thinks he’s a Jewish threat to humanity and runs him over with his car; Jonas Onus—Figgo’s partner in white power idiocy; and many, many more. Hiaasen ties them all together and delivers them to their appropriate fates, in his wildest and most entertaining novel to date.

Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay
This popcorn thriller from one of the genre’s best is a twisty, dark tale about the power of social media and the consequences of family trauma. It’s Parents Weekend at SCU, and the festivities are set to begin with a dinner for the students and their families. When friends Stella, Libby, Mark, Blane, and Felix don’t show up for dinner as expected, there are several legitimate possibilities for their absence. But their parents immediately know something isn’t right and notify the authorities, who are already on high alert after a student was found dead earlier in the week. Assigned to the case, FBI agent Sarah Keller quickly discovers that everyone involved has a secret, and each family has something to hide. Finlay (If Something Happens to Me, 2024) has a gift for intertwining many story lines and characters in a cohesive, compelling way. The tropes used here don’t feel stale, and plenty of surprises and red herrings will keep readers interested. Fans won’t want to miss Finlay’s latest. – Booklist Review

Retirement Plan by Sue Hincenbergs
Four couples have been friends for ages, but the shine has definitely gone from each of their marriages. They argue and stew over tiny affronts, such as why can’t Andre just cut down the juniper bush that Shalisa hates? Didn’t Hank know that Pam was saving that leftover pad thai to eat later? After one wife, Marlene, suffers a loss that turns out to be a win (Dave’s sudden death by garage door makes her well-off after she gets a huge insurance payout), the other women start to think that they too should bump off their husbands for the life-insurance money. They have no idea, however, that the men have been plotting as well; their scheme to skim funds from the casino where Hank works has been a wild success, and it’s almost time for the men to cash out and flee the country. The plots thicken when someone gets wise, prompting Hank to hire a hit man.
VERDICT It all adds up to unlikable people doing crazy things in increasingly outlandish situations, with a tone that switches between mordant humor and camp.– Library Journal Review

Who Will Remember by C. S. Harris
Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin’s twentieth outing (after What Cannot Be Said, 2024) begins, as most do, with the discovery of a brutal murder. This time it’s Lord Preston Farnsworth, hung upside down in an abandoned chapel in the pose of the tarot card, The Hanged Man. During the unusually cold and rainy August of 1816, Devlin is called in to help Bow Street with the investigation because of his ability to move among the social circles that must be investigated, and he finds that Farnsworth was a member of the Society for the Suppression of Vice, whose obsession with crime and immorality led to the cruel mistreatment of London’s poor. The authorities are pointing to Devlin’s friend Major Hugh Chandler, who ran off with Farnsworth’s wife years ago, but when another body is discovered posed like another tarot card, that seems unlikely. Harris once again presents a holistic view of Regency England as the plight of the poor, the fallout from the war with France, and political turmoil at home all come into play in this terrific historical mystery. – Booklist Review
