Hi everyone, here are our five musical recommendations for the week; four streaming suggestions and one recommended album on CD.

Freegal Streaming Suggestions*

The Complete Columbia Recording Sessions, Vol. 1 – 1929-1937 (Genre: Swing, Jazz, Blues, Vocal) by Mildred Bailey:

Mildred Bailey was a popular singer during the 1930s and 1940s and became known as “The Queen of Swing.”

Unfortunately she died young, while only in her 40s, so she is not as well known today as she might otherwise have been. This is the first of three great sets of Bailey’s complete recordings put out by Columbia Records.

And just a note on the sound quality – most of the songs sound really good but a few of the alternate takes show their age so those who greatly prefer pristine sound quality beware!

Some of the songs in this 62 song collection include: What Kind O’ Man Is You, I Like to Do Things For You, Is That Religion? Harlem Lullaby, Lazybones and Someday Sweetheart.

Play Deep by The Outfield (1985) (Genre: Pop, Rock):

The Outfield is a London based band consisting of singer & bassist Tony Lewis, guitarist and keyboardist John Spinks and drummer Alan Jackson.

Play Deep is the band’s debut LP and it is a great example of 1980s pop! The LP contains the songs: Your Love, Every Time You Cry, Talk to Me and Taking My Chances, and of course, their big hit All The Love In The World.

A Thousand Hearts (2014) by Cara Dillon (Genre: Folk, International):

Cara Dillon was born in Dungiven, Ireland in 1975 and began her music career in 1989. Her music has a bright breezy modern folk sound to it.

Songs on this upbeat LP include: Jacket so Blue, Bright Morning Star, Moolough Mary, Shotgun Down the Avalanche, River Run and The Shores of Lough Bran.

Monk’s Dream (1962) by The Thelonious Monk Quartet (Genre: Jazz):

This is the debut LP by The Thelonious Monk Quartet. The band featured Thelonious Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on sax, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums.

Songs on this classic album include: Monk’s Dream, Bright Mississippi, Five Spot Blues, Just a Gigolo and Sweet and Lovely.

CD of the Week:

Quiet Nights (2009) by Diana Krall (Genre: Vocal, Jazz)

A fun album by the Jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall.

Too Marvelous for Words, Walk on By, The Boy from Ipanema, So Nice, Guess I’ll Hang My Tears out To Dry and Every Time We Say Goodbye.

His wife, Amy, died giving birth to their second child, a girl who lived only a few hours more. Murdoch, racked by grief, withdrew from four-year-old, Jack. This he regrets and would dearly love to make up for his negligence.

As we enter the story, Jack, now twenty-one, has returned from France after being wounded and gassed at the Battle of Passchendaele. It is soon apparent that he is deeply troubled but he’s not confiding in his father. He does, however, seem to be bound by shared secrets to another wounded former soldier, Percy McKinnon.

Murdoch suddenly has much more serious crimes than rum-running on his hands. The night after Jack and McKinnon arrive home, a young man is found stabbed to death in the impoverished area of Toronto known as the Ward. Soon after, Murdoch has to deal with a tragic suicide, also a young man. Two more murders follow in quick succession. The only common denominator is that all of the men were exempted from conscription.

Increasingly worried that Jack knows more than he is letting on, Murdoch must solve these crimes before more innocents lose their lives. It is a solution that will give him only sorrow.

Emily Fridlund grew up in Minnesota and currently resides in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Her fiction has appeared in a variety of journals, including Boston Review, Zyzzyva, Five Chapters, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. It teaches effectively with simple bullet point steps, each accompanied by a picture. The website is also sleek to use; as you click through the steps, the images change, and some of the steps even have short video clips indicating movements to be made.

Brought up in a secularized Jewish household on Manhattan’s upper Eastside, Nancy Green knows suspiciously little about her parents’ past. She knows they were World War II Jewish refugees who were able to escape Germany with precious family heirlooms that are constant reminders of a lost life and world Nancy knows very little about. The longing she has for some kind of spiritual connection first leads her into an encounter with an Hassidic Jewish man who, unable to find meaning in his own religion, has taken vows to becomes a monk; and then an involvement with a Catholic boy in Boston where she is studying for her masters degree in English literature. Yvon, trying to escape the clutches of Catholicism and his overbearing mother, finds temporary refuge in Nancy and sees her as an escape from the insular enclave of Franco-Americans where he has spent most of his life. Their highly erotic, tempestuous relationship is frightening to both of them and a tragedy in Yvon’s life eventually pulls them apart. Devastated by the breakup, Nancy ends up marrying a Jewish man from London, hoping to find herself with a man of her own religion. However, this new relationship, pale in comparison to her relationship with Yvon, ends very sadly and regrettably, inspiring Nancy to go back to Boston to track down the man who, she realizes, is the great love of her life.
