Monthly Science Fiction Film @ The Library

Did you know the library offers a Monthly Science Fiction Film at the library? We do! The Digital Literacy Services staff host the film showing which always relates to technology in some way.

And this Friday, March 13 – we’re showing “Starman” with Jeff Bridges & Karen Allen.

A fun time will be had!

Join us! It is free to attend the film and refreshments will be provided!

And if you’ve never seen Starman — here’s a description of the plot:

Starman (1984): Director John Carpenter presents a romantic science fiction odyssey starring Jeff Bridges as an innocent alien from a distant planet who learns what it means to be a man in love and. When his spacecraft is shot down over Wisconsin, Starman (Bridges) arrives at the remote cabin of a distraught young widow, Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen), and clones the form of her dead husband. The alien convinces Jenny to drive him to Arizona, explaining that if he isn’t able to get there to be picked up by his people he will die. Hot on their trail are government agents, intent on capturing the alien, dead or alive. En route, Starman demonstrates the power of universal love, while Jenny rediscovers her human feelings for passion. MPAA Rating: PG. Run Time: 115 minutes. Technology Subject: Extraterrestrial life.

Adult Services & Digital Literacy/Tech Programs @ The Library March 11 – 14, 2015

There is one neat Digital Literacy programs scheduled for the rest of the week, our monthly science fiction film on Friday, and, there are some really cool Adult Services & Teen Tech programs going on this week at the library which are also included on this list!

Teen Tech Week: Libraries are for Making: 3D Printing: Create a customized object using 3D printing software. Printed items will need to be picked up at a later date as 3D printing takes some time.

Teen Tech Week: Libraries are for Making: Tech Repurposed: Create new life for old and outdated technology by making floppy disk books, resistor jewelry and more.

Adult Creative Writers Group: Inject some socialization into your solo writing time by join the library’s Adult Creative Writers Group for conversation, inspiration and feedback on writing projects. No sign up is required. This group meets every Thursday from 6-8 pm. On the third Thursday of the month the group meets in the library. Friday Night Free Film: Gloria (2013): A vibrant Chilean divorcée falls for a handsome ex-naval officer, but finds any chance for lasting happiness hinging on her willingness to confront a painful chapter from her past. In the wake of her divorce, 58-year-old Gloria Paulina García is determined to live her life to the fullest. Her children have all grown up and moved out, so rather than sit home alone, Gloria spends much of her time at local nightclubs and singles parties. Later, just when Gloria has started to realize that her active new lifestyle offers precious little emotional sustenance, she’s swept off her feet by a dashing former naval officer in his sixties. Before long she’s dreaming of a bright future with him. But true love never comes easy, and before Gloria can enjoy her twilight years with the man who makes her feel truly fulfilled, she must make peace with a harsh truth that could drive him away forever.

March of Dimes Knit-a-thon Benefit: Come to the SSC Library on March 7 from 11 am – 2 pm and knit or crochet booties or hats for babies. This program benefits the March of Dimes. For questions, call Michelle Wells, Adult Services Director at the library at 607.936.3713 ext. 209.

Quarterly Crafting: Learn a quick hand stitched 9 path square quilt piece that can be turned into a hot pad or purse. Or choose among the materials to make something else. As always, there will be veggies, pizza and dessert as well as relaxed conversation.
